505 Gibbs vs 500 Jeffery. Thoughts on these heavy hitters? Alternatives?

I wonder why people are so against belts on cases, except for the 375 H&H, then it's fine. I also wonder why people are so against rebated rims except when it's the 404 Jeffery. I have no problem with belts or rebated rim cases personally. I like my 375 H&H / Weatherby and love my 500 Jeffery.

I adore my 425 WR and my 375 and 300 H&H magnums . Rebated rims / belted cases i don’t give a stuff . They are just great cartridges in great rifles .

The disdain for the .460 Weatherby (largely) comes from people showing up in Africa with a gun they had not shot much and couldn’t shoot it well. The Weatherby rifles were relatively light, Mark Vs were obviously push feed, and a lot were seemingly bought by people unfamiliar with heavy recoiling guns as they were the biggest and baddest. In a proper rifle, the round itself is solid.

I know of at least 3 well known Zimbabwe PHs who exclusively use .460 W rifles and swear by them. One was recently hit hard by a previously unseen buff. He had no time to get a second shot off. He knows how I feel about dbls. For dangerous game . He said, “before you ask, yes I would have rather had a double, but a damned big one”

I believe the difference between base and rim diameter on the .404j to be .002 smaller rim. I have shot hundreds of rounds of .404j
And swear it to be the smoothest feeding round I shoot. A lot of bang with little buck.

thought to compare apples to apples. Some report the Gibbs has more recoil than the Jeffery, so thought using QL, with the same loading, how do they compare in 10lb rifle.
Note the Jeffery has a faster risetime but essentially, they are the same. Perhaps comparison were made with different bullets weights, powders, barrel lengths, weights, stock, design, etc. The graph suggest felt recoil is the same.

I don't have a 505 Gibbs but I have a CZ 550 in 500 Jeffery. My pet load is a 570g TSX at 2300 fps using 103g of H4895 I think the 505 case is larger so you need to use slower powder and more of it to achieve the same velocity with a 570g bullet, so more recoil. I got the 570g TSX up to 2510 fps using 120g of IMR 4350. But ouch ouch ouch lol

Beck... the question is whether you can open the bolt face enough the rim dia on aw 416 Rigby is .590 and the 505 Gibbs is .640... I built my Gibbs on a GMA Safari magnum..

GMA is a much better choice for the 505 Gibbs. CZ 550 is fine for the 500 Jeffery.

As someone who has half baked considered adding a rifle in one of these cartridges to the collection, it appears that the 500 Jeffery is the easier path to take. More factory rifles available in it, easier to convert existing actions to 500J v 505 Gibbs etc.

The only real let down is that factory ammo is apparently non-existent.

Yep. A 570 gr bullet at 2150 is a 570 gr bullet at 2150. While powder charge is a (very minor) component of calculating recoil energy - bullet weight, MV, and rifle weight are the big 3.

If you are to believe https://shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php then weight of the powder charge is important... in the Woodleigh Manual there is a 40gr difference between the fastest and slowest powder listed for a 525 gr Bullet for the 505 ..That's a 20ftlbs diff at the shoulder

40 grains is a lot of mass.

I should have been more specific - if the load range is say 70 gr of varget vs 80 gr of varget, the recoil difference for a given weight bullet is trivial.

I could see a pretty big difference in recoil between 70 gr of varget vs 110 gr of H1000 (no idea what the actual powders are on that load, I just know varget is medium and H1000 is very slow)_

I'd rather have a .505, and thinking of getting one. Nothing fancy this go-around, just a plain and simple .505 in a p-14 maybe. Something I don't have to worry about in the thorns. But I want it as slick feeding as I can get it. The .500 Jeffery rebated rim always bothered me by looking at it, but I can't help it. Plus, I just love the .505....

I've seen some discussion on here back and forth regarding the merits of these cartridges but also some of the cons ie finding/forming brass, overall cost, felt recoil, feeding issues (Jeffery) etc.

For those of you that made the jump up from the 458s but wanted to stick with a bolt action rifle, what did you decide to go with? Thoughts on these two cartridges? Any others to consider in the same class?

My take on this is gun fit is very very important. I don’t think my lite 505 kicks any more than than my nearly 2 lbs heavier 505.
