505 Gibbs - how much fun is that?

The width of a Sako butt stock is not nearly what it should be to soak up the recoil of a .50 caliber. I've said it several times...stock fit becomes more critical as the caliber goes up. Sako believes the butt stock shape used on a 6.5CM will be just fine for .375 and above. It's not.

An AHR #3 is a different story altogether.

Also one thing I have noticed on the sako rifles that I have played with in the gunshop, Inc a 500 jeff is that to me the stock length seems slightly short...I am average height etc I presume at bit under 6ft ....but who knows these days....never noticed the width....didn't seem noticeable thin to me...just the slight shortness in length....noticed it in some usa rifles as well ...including one few years ago on the Winchester stand..from the custom shop when checking them out at sci.....

I've had to add to LOP on nearly all of my firearms so I know of where you speak. Much easier to cut it back than try and make it longer. LOL. Story of my life.

I first noticed the difference when @TOBY458 showed me a picture of his Sako next to a Kimber Talkeetna (nearly a copy of a Win M70). The difference in the butt stock was incredible. The Blaser R8 has a similar shaped butt pad to the Sako. I know it's not like me to down talk the R8 but when it comes to the .40+ calibers...they need to do better.

I love my 505 Gibbs and it’s right at 13.0 lbs with a scope. A true hammer on big game.

When I asked the Gunsmith who built my 505 about the width of the stock he said that the size of the action determines much of the width, the Granite Mt Arms PH Magnum is huge close to 4#s in the white .... Here is how my 505 started Granite Mt Arms action Krieger Barrel and a Bastogne Blank (disregard Stock outline)

I am sure they are pretty expensive.
Krish

Not sure on 505 but presume similar to the 500 jeff...last I bought here couple months ago were equivalent of usd 15.60 a round...sako and norma...so not sure what are in USA.. but would have thought not much cheaper

500J and 505GIBBS Norma Solids are going for $19.30/per cartridge (USD) with both currently unavailable. They prices you stated are reasonable considering they were 4 months ago.

Some of you may know im in the process of having a 500 j built should be done by Christmas

Reloads are costing me about $6.20 US a round

How? I buy 500 Jeffery Graf & Sons brass for $4 per case, I get 10 reloads then throw them out. A 570g TSX cost about $1.25 then powder and primer. I estimate about $2 per round which is what a box of Rem 30-06 corelokts cost.

I guess it is how the math is done and mine is pretty miserable ....
Brass was $4.70 per, rest is the same as your numbers so the brass gets cheeper everytime you use it but i could not tell you what the brass is worth the 10th time I reload it

My brass is fine after 10 full power reloads but it's an old habit, I throw them out just out of an abundance of caution. My math is simple divide the cost of the brass by 10 Best to you and nice to talk to another .500 shooter :)

That's a wrap, on our first hunt of this years season.

Hunting conditions are a bit tougher in South Africa during the month of February, but can be just as rewarding if done right.
