500 Jeffery Club

Cutting Edge Bullets does not offer the Safari Raptor for the 500 Jeffery but, they do offer the Raptor for the 500 NE. Since both the 500 Jeffery and 500 NE are .510 diameter, could one buy the bullets for the 500 NE and load it into the 500 Jeffery cases and shoot it out of the Jeffery rifle?

Any .510 bullet will work.

Normally, any bullet caliber .510 will work, but you should still be sure how the throat of your rifle is designed. I don't know how old your rifle is, but with modern rifles of caliber 500 Jeffery there should not be problems. Different with older rifles only designed for the shorter 535gr bullet.

I'd imagine people have gotten by, just fine .. with Woodleigh's RN for a hundred years.

I have loaded successfully, Woodleigh .510 570 grain softs
(made for the 500NE) in the 500 Jefferey, to moderate (2150-2200 fps) velocity.
The cannelure is in a different place, but I just a Lee Factory Crimp Die for crimping to COAL.

I loaded until now my cartridges with the 535gr FMJ bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2400 fps. Has always worked well on elephants so far. Unfortunately, the powder I need is no longer available at the moment, so I have to think about other loads. But I will stay with a 535gr bullet from Woodleigh or Degol.

That's cruising! .. the lighter, the stiffer.

Norma's 540. 7000ft/lbs. In a 9lb rifle.

Strange liberal backpack. But fits right in the pocket & adds 1/4" LOP?

Yeah my 500 Jeffery weighs 12 lbs with scope unloaded. For me it's just right I shoot 570g TSX's at 2300 fps

I saw a video of an elephant taken with a 416 Rem with only one bullet needed. Frontal brain shot. The elephant dropped right there...

Is the recoil of a 500 Jeffery or 505 Gibbs worth it over the 416 cal?

Also, are there any suppressors available for .510 cal?

Same theory would also apply to the 375H&H V 416 RM . Just saying….

Suppressors on a DG rifle IMO is sacrilegious. But I suppose what ever scratches your itch can be tolerated.

A 12lb 500 must be a lot more tolerable, proficient, etc.

That AHR is 10lbs, my mistake. The Sako .. unforgiven!

Everyone's seen enough of this, but I'm taking it out for Bear the 15th...

I'm sure the 500's are useless without a good shoot. But they are a breed apart, devastating, legendary cartridge, hx. etc.

This is really an interesting watch,

What is roughly around the average weight of a rifle chambered in 500 Jeffery that is the best compromise between reasonable weight to carry around and reduce recoil?...

Also, barrel length recommendations?

W.J. say's 11.5lbs.

Barrel length? I'd imagine, anything goes. Tim's 21" Octagon is a beaut.

Good Afternoon,
How firm are you on your Dakota 416? I am highly interested but looking at a few different guns currently.

Best,
BJ

What is the minimum you would take.

I have a Chapuis 450-400 double that looks brand new and shoots well, never been hunted from what I can tell. I am willing to part with it as I have a 375 H&H Sodia on it's way from Dorleac & Dorleac. I am looking for $9,250 for it and if you are interested, I am happy to send you some pictures. Regards,
Steve
