Good morning all,

Not too much info online regarding the 500 AHR cartridge and real world performance reports on hunts.

Wanting to know if the two cartridges are similar in performance, velocity, and overall use.

Who has used or been around the 500 AHR? Any info will be greatly appreciated?

I have never seen a 500 AHR, let alone used one. But I believe the 500 AHR is one of a number of "improved" versions of the 500 Jeffery case (one of several that use a full size rim rather than a rebated rim). Unless you bought a rifle chambered in 500AHR, I doubt it would be worth the effort of finding dies, cases, etc.

Though with the ballistics essentially the same as a 500 Jeffery, I have no doubt a well built rifle in 500 AHN would be a great hunting rifle.

The .500 AHR is a slightly modernized, slightly more "gunsmithed" version of the .500 Jeffery. Its performance is functionally identical in the field it is a world-ending cartridge for the largest game.

The only sensible thing to improve on the cartridge 500 Jeffery is the rebated rim. Trying to improve its performance by increasing the case volume is rather questionable. The 500 Jeffery cartridge is a very powerful cartridge, especially when it comes to hunting elephants. Shooting rifles of this caliber is not very easy and I can only imagine that cartridges like the 500 AHR or 500 A-Square will cause the shooter even more problems. If one need a lot of recoil reducing devices to be able to shoot rifles of this calibers, better one left it, because nobody need in the practice anything that goes in power beyond a 500 Jeffery cartridge in a bolt action rifle.

I own a 500 AHR. I have yet to shoot it. I have all the dies and brass, but need to order some bullets. I’m not sure where to get load data. I may just have to compare case capacity and use 500 Jeffery start loads for comparison.

The .500 AHR American Hunting Rifles' take on the .500 Jeffery is a beast for DG but yeah, real world reports are thin mostly forum whispers from guys who built customs in the '90s early 2000s. I've been around a couple one on a CZ550 action, 25" barrel, 12.5 lbs with a brake, and it's functionally identical to the .500 Jeffery: pushes 535–600gr bullets at 2,300–2,400 fps for 7,000–8,000 ft lbs world ending on elephant or buff at 50–100 yds. No rebated rim BS, so feeds smoother in bolts.

Vs. .500 NE? Similar use thick skinned stoppers, but AHR Jeffery edges velocity energy 2,350 fps 6,560 ft lbs stock over NE's 2,150 fps 5,850 ft lbs with 570gr flatter, harder hit, but more recoil kick 90 ft lbs in a 10lb rifle. NE's milder in doubles, better for follow ups.

Hunts One buddy dropped a Zim buff broadside at 60 yds 600gr soft at 2,350 fps anchor shot, no exit, zero follow up needed. Another used it on Alaskan brown bear 22" barrel build penetrated shoulder deep, ethical kill at 40 yds. Brass is the pain Bertram's soft, sticky extractions, but dies load data mirror Jeffery. If you're chasing Big Five, it's overkill perfection just practice the flinch out.

Jerome, do you think my last post in rough camping must maybe shift as an article?

Good afternoon,

I'm trying to get in contact with Mr Butch Searcy. I have the opportunity to buy one of his rifles chambered in 577 nitro Express however the seller does not have any of the paperwork with the information about what ammunition or bullet weight was used to regulate it. I know he is not making firearms anymore but I wanted to reach out after seeing one of your post about him.

Hi - the only (best) method of sending you the .375/06IMP data is with photographing my book notes. My camera died so the only way I can do it is with my phone. To do that, I would need your e-mail address, as this
new Android phone is too complicated to upload to my desk computer, which would be easier and to down-grade, reduce the file sizes.
Best wishes
Daryl
