4th shot a flyer

All my "fliers" have been the fault of the shooter - me.

At the range today, my sons first shot with a new big bore rifle went high and left and he was questioning things. I told him that rifle had shot very well when being regulated and such. His next shot was in the 10 ring!
We are taking it out on a cull hunt in a few days and any misses will not be the fault of the gun or my hand loads.

Putting five together mentally difficult, IMO.
When shooting for group, dry firing between shots is a big help for me, regardless of the number.

I’m having the same problem. I figured it to be a seating issue on my end. But I’ve also questioned barrel vibration. I’m not patient but will have to wait five minutes in between shots and see what happens. Some good suggestions I can try-thanks to all View attachment 461385
This is almost exactly the way it looks.

Very interesting idea. You are probably on to something.

I think both went high left. And almost the same distance too.

Actually it's probably the only time of day that I don't look at AH :D
Ok, we're getting somewhere. 'Had a heavy-recoiling gun that did that in the past. 'Turned out to be a change in grip and form by the 4th shot that'd make it go astray. I think that's what happens w/ RH twist and RH shooter (whereas LH twist and/or shooter does the exact opposite.) 'Nothing to worry about. 'Have you tried to repeat the >3 shots, but take some time to compose yourself and make each one your best?! (if all else fails, put an empty cartridge in as filler material on 4, and jump to 5!) No charge. LOL

don't sweat it-i've had both a new gun ad posted on AH, compounded by the Coriolis effect completely screw up first and last shots, and everything in-between. I cope by blaming it on my cellular carrier and internet provider. Find a range where no cell signal is available!

The ideas make a lot of sense. I honestly don't find the rifle to be too much at all. I quite enjoy it. But, I now have something to work on without worrying too much that the problem is with the load. Rotation while seating the bullet, taking a pause, dry firing, these things will tell the tale. It's a good lesson. It's enjoyable to have a way forward.

"When shooting for group, dry firing between shots is a big help for me, "

Do you shoot for groups in a competition?

Not at all, my abilities in that area are pretty limited. (I need all the help I can get. ) But I learned the value of dry fire from some talented shooters.

Well, to repeat myself ,
"all my flyers are my fault and I usually know something went wrong BEFORE knowing where the bullet hit. "

At the range I shoot at, I have seen SWAT Teams go through an interesting procedure. A shooter, either from the bench or prone position, will fire a single shot and then turn his head away from the rifle. A loader will either load a live round or an empty case and close the bolt. The shooter turns his head back to the firing position and proceeds to fire the rifle, not knowing whether a live round or and empty cartridge is in the chamber.

Put five one inch red dot sticky targets on your paper, each one two inches from the other. Shoot one shot at each dot. Wait until the barrel is back to ambient temperature before firing the next shot. See if you still get the flyer.

Personally, I think your own theory is probably right on. Pressure of seeing a great group in the making or recoil awareness more than a flinch is causing the flier. I seriously doubt it’s a load issue when the last shot goes where intended.
I have done the same thing myself too many times.

Here's a thought that's different from the rest.
Next time take your calipers to the range. Measure each round for OAL before loading into the magazine. After each round is fired measure the following round for OAL. This will determine if you're getting any kinetic bullet pulling in the magazine.

I'm not saying it isn't you, or something else isn't off, but it's good to be thorough in running this to ground.

Oh lordy....I think my scope is actually broken.

Went back today to zero at 200 and be all set for South Africa. Shots flying everywhere! Did I screw up the reloads? I tried with a box of Norma factory - usually a bit low but groups well - I could not get it on paper consistently. Went home and all the screws seem tight......

Houston, we have an expensive problem....

1. Check receiver screws.

2. Activate long term capital budget.

Inquiring minds want to know, scope brand and model.

Its a hunting rifle, nothing you would use it on is going to stand around for that 4th shot. If it were mine I would consider it good to go.

I am very surprised. I checked the screws and all seemed good. It has gone on a few moose hunts, and the range a lot. So I am totally confused. But I don't see how my shooting can otherwise be so off

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
