47" Buffalo

If I found one that size in Tanzania, Zim, Zambia etc. I would consider a sizable tip. On a feed lot, (which is what this sounds like as 5K acres is not much land) not so much, 5,000 acres is approximately 20K x 1K. You can walk from one end to the other in a day. In a 10 day hunt you are literally covering a 2K x 1K area each day.

........... what are you the hunter feel a Buffalo in this class should price.

I am not here to argue about anything just want to see what the hunting community is willing to pay for a big Buffalo. ..................

Dawie, There are certainly hunters who will be in the market for this hunt. Time, money, guarantee record book, disability, age, etc.
I personally do not like the pay by the inch pricing on some farms.

So, going market price for a Buffalo hunt in the area from my side.
Not much help, sorry.

Thank you for all the inputt, I never indicated that I have a 47" to hunt I just wanted to do some research on what the hunter out there is looking for and I do believe like my bigger Sable there will be some one that will pay more for a monster Buffalo.

Thank you

Having hunted with Dawie Kemp, I believe I understand where he is coming from. He is a conscientious and fair minded land owner(and thus animal owner in SA). Just like any business owner with a product, sometimes there comes along that special opportunity where something unique could add value to the product. For Americans, think Carol Shelby. Mustang cars had a fair market value, but when Shelby put his name on it, a dealership would have been crazy to offer a Shelby Mustang at the fair market price of the run of the mill Mustang. The name and features commanded a premium for that model. I believe, and I have not spoken to Dawie, that he considers this particular buff unique and thus capable of bringing more that your run of the mill cape buff. I don’t necessarily think he is asking what YOU personally would pay, but what you think the market would bear for this 47” buff. I personally think that there are hunters out there where if offered a cape buffalo hunt at fair market value of say $10K, with the opportunity at this specific bull, they would agree to pay between $3-5k more for this opportunity. Just my two pesos.

Mort I agree with you as a buffalo hunter and Shelby fan. Dawie, I am sure there is someone out there that is more interested in inches than experience. But the true hunter is looking for the adventure and excitement. Nothing like strapping up in a +700 hp Shelby or chasing a buffalo, the memeries will last for ever.

In my opinion, this buff shot by @Jfet is the best buff posted to AH in the last year.

Those are most kind words.Thank You Very Much(y)

However, I hope that every AH member that has had the privilege to hunt a cape buffalo will quietly disagree with that statement.

That buffalo was a magnificent animal. A true warrior in every sense of the word. He was pursued by a team that performed flawlessly. Yes, I even include myself in that statement, which is a rarity.

My wish is that each hunter that chooses to hunt a cape buffalo will have the amazing experience that I have had with this animal.

I paid 7k Trophy fee in Zim for a 41” bull, the guy a few weeks before our hunt shot a 49” bull and paid 7k trophy fee. Truth be told I would have been just as happy with a 36” bull that was old, worn down and nasty. I hunt SA and enjoy it, but would not personally participate in a bidding war on a specific critter. Some guys are more sensitive to having the biggest and the best on their wall, I prefer to have a better tale to tell even if it means that the animal is just representative of the species. I hope you get what you want out of him, 47” is an impressive beast!
Cheers,
Cody

Good plan.

Mr. Kemp- you asked a fair and straightforward qurstion and got a bunch of self righteous soapbox answers. Heres a straightforward one-$10,000 usd. It’s what I can afford to pay and it’s the market I can shop in.
Wether it’s a 36 or 47 that’s all I can pay. Which is why I drive a Ford but not a Shelby. Guys that can afford to drive shelbys are out there, I hope you find them and they can give you their market price-

And here’s my own sideways answer-antelope island in utah is 42 miles total and completely surrounded by the great salt lake. Only two tags per year. At auction you could have purchased one of those tags for triple the amount of my home. Guys who can drive shelbys lined up to hire a guide and shoot a 200 plus inch mule deer.
Limited area, small in size and restricted genetic ability-sky is the limit that guys were willing to pay, in that market-just food for thought

Dawie, just a thought and yes a 47" bufalo is huge but that is Roland Ward scoring not SCI, will it be possible to estimate the SCI score on the bull.
There are indivduals out there that chase the record books but 47" might mean nothing if the SCI score is low as a result of the bull not having curl or small bosses.

Dawie you started a thread with a question I have been pondering on a long time.... This thread confirmed what I have always been thinking though...

At the end of the day it all comes down to what the client can afford and what his intentions, likes and dislikes are hunting wise. If he is chasing score and inches and he does not have a problem to hunt the bull in 5000 acres he will book the hunt. I also know there is far less hunters out there that will do hunts like that but they are out there.

If I had a 47" bull in 5000 acres or in my hunting area I will definitely advertise it at whatever rate it has to go for, you never know!

Glad to see you have made it home from exile during show season.

Hopefully you will post some more as you have time!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
