.458 Win or .448 Lot

This!

The 458WM with a 450 TSX will do work. Heck I have a lott and still use the 450gr TSX it just works. If you want to try some, buffalo bore sell the loaded up.
Oh, I've loaded some "moderate" loads in my WM with the 450gr. TSXs and 71gr. of H335. Actually, kind of light loads? I haven't loaded any Lotts yet. I don't own a chronograph, so I have to go by the reloading manuals and "felt" recoil. I know it's draconian but that's how I've rolled without a chronograph for the last 45+ years. Off topic kind of, but factory 450gr. Barnes WM seem to recoil slightly faster and about the same felt recoil as factory 500gr. Partitions in my Lott? Go figure? Maybe the Partitions are loaded "down" a bit or the Barnes are loaded "hotter"? Factory 225gr. Core Lokts in my .338WM Browning A Bolt "feel" a "sharper" recoil to me than my CZ550 .375 with 270 OR 300gr. factory cartridges. But the CZ is a heavier rifle. I know I need to get a chronograph, but this is what I have experienced with the larger bore cartridges.

show us this proprietary .448 Lott! :p Read what Kevin Robertson has to say about the 447.99 in his "Africa's Most Dangerous!"

It's the new .448 Buffalohammer from Remington. American Hunter will be testing it soon. Based on their Buckhammer using the Lott case. LOL

Ok. I'm IN! -so long as they send me a sticker for my pick'em-up truck winder!

BTW: my gf bought a "BuckHammer" and uses Hdy rubber-tipped Lever Revolution bullets to wake me up. It works well, but my hearing isn't so good...after 10 yrs, she's like a new woman coming in to personally greet me in the a.m.?

I'm pushing the 450s 2350fps in the lott. I have not even tried the 500gr bullets yet. I am perfectly happy with the performance of the 450s that I have not really had a reason to step it up.

'had a 458 WM-couldn't get better than 2090 w/ most 500s and 2150ish w/ the 450s. Sold it in favor of a 416 Taylor (2,450 fps no problemo!) I believe you can get 2350 w/ 500s in a 458 Lott/Wyatt/ASq. As I recall for ea add'l. 0.1" of case in 458 you can get 100 fps. And, it translates to the shoulder (yours!) Ensure proper gun heft, recoil pad area and recoild reducers (your choice.) You should easily be able to get 2,450 w/ proper 450 slugs. The Lott isn't required in America, but recommended in Africa. My son took a nice buffalo w/ my 458 WM years ago at 20 yds, but I'd rather have more steam at 100!

@Yaseen it all depends on what your practical use for the rifle will be. Are you a professional Hunter or an occasional shooter? Do you intend to hunt elephants regularly or just buffalo?
I owned a beautiful win mag built on an FN action which suited my needs as an occasional hunter. When I turned pro I decided to buy a CZ Lott . I then ended up trading the win mag a few years later and have regretted it when we got a job to remove a bunch of old giraffes. The WM loaded with a 450 grain solid packs a good amount of whack for anything up to buffalo. I have still seen powder clumping on compressed loads using modern powders so don’t overdo it. A few guys here load the WM seated slightly out. Since you have a CZ I would say that if you are uncomfortable with the ballistics then have it reamed out to Lott. Most of theBRNO and CZ 550 is 458 Lott in South Africa were imported as win mag then converted before being sold. A relatively simple operation.

I’m getting 2,300 fps with my 22” barreled Lott shooting the Federal TBBC loads. Testing is hilarious. At every shot the chrono wings and face plate go flying, the tripod holding it tips over, and general mayhem occurs. I don’t do it too often.

My first Safari I used my Browning 458 Win and 450 Barnes X...Great Results..4 Buff plus other game went down fast! Some complete penetrstions too! Barrel was 20" ..dont remember velocity?
I like the Lott even better but to answer your question your fine with your .458Win

Ballistics of the win mag are not of concern. You can get factory ammo with 500 gr bullets @ 2150 fps or more. If you use the 450 or 480 monos, you can get up to 2275 fps ( measured chrono reading in ny cz. You dont need a lott.

With your cz, you can load bullets out a bit and have the same case capacity as a lott. I did this with peregrine monometal bullets because my cz prefers longer rounds, it feeds better. So you may end up like me and ream your cz to a lott because the action feeds the longer lott better. I am using 515 gr peregrine monolithics @2200 fps from the lott and have done 450 gr monos @ 2275 fps and 480 gr monos @ 2175 fps in win mag cases. Search for badboymelvin and pm him. He is really helpful with win nag reloading and you are welcome to pm me as well, i have some reloading records that i can share. You can easily get 2150 fps with 500 gr in the win mag with a number of powders. Pushing above 2300 fps on a big bore risks bullet failure.

Seems to be too close to call to have buyer's remorse. I don't think anything you're shooting at is going to notice the difference in 200 fps. If you hadn't bought it yet, would the lott offer a little more variety in what you could shoot? Sure. But I personally wouldn't stress it.

Ive just checked my load data and I chronographed the 450 grain TSX at 2350fps when loaded to a longer than normal COAL of 3.660 from my BRNO 602 in 458 Win Mag. It feeds perfectly from the magazine at that length which is essential. I also went through the thought process of "should have got a Lott" but Im now not sure its worth it. The next thing I need is to get a good flat nosed solid to work with that shoots to the same point of aim

Fellow hunters. Between the two above calibers, what would be a better choice. I bought a .458 Win, but I for some reason, have buyers remorse. Should I have bought a .458 Lot.

Can I have some advice or comments between these two calibers.

Many thanks.

They are both the same "caliber", just different cartridges. You can always have a gunsmith throat the 458 Winchester to a Lott, however the Winchester is a very potent round particularly with more recent propellents and bullets. They're both excellent. The Lott will recoil more because of its heavier powder charge. You can't go wrong either way.
If it's your first larger caliber, you may practice more with the Winchester. You can always throat it out to a Lott at a later stage.

Hi, Yaseen. Lovely purchase. My philosophy is always as follows:

If you are buying a new rifle, opt for the .458 Lott if you have the option. But if you already own a .458 Winchester Magnum, then don’t feel desperate to have it replaced.

Use 3 bullets in this rifle:
1) 500Gr Nosler Partition lead cored soft points- For lion, leopards, soft framed plains game
2) 450Gr Barnes X all copper hollow points (now called “TSX”)- For Cape buffalo, hippo in water, tough framed plains game
3) 450Gr Cutting Edge Bullets all brass flat point Safari Solids- For elephant, hippo on land, rhino, tiny 10

The first 2 are available as factory loaded fare from Nosler and Barnes. The last one can be custom loaded for you by Hendershots Custom Loaders.

The 450Gr bullet weight (for monolithic bullets) allows you to load in a larger charge of powder and negates the problems with the .458 Winchester Magnum’s limited case capacity (which become more of an issue whenever monolithic bullets are concerned).

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
