.458 Win Mag Shotshell Loads

When I seal brass 12g cases I use beeswax on the overshot card, this is with BP for target loads, never used them for hunting, water glass would be probably better for that
Gumpy

I have tried beeswax, I like the water glass better

What is the velocity of this load?

What are other powder options?
Thanks

Take a gander at this again:

About any shotgun data for .410 to 28-ga loads, both powder and shot.
Those are usually about 1100-1200 fps and about 10,000 psi.

A 28-ga load in a .458 WIN MAG might be about 15,000 psi and over 1200 fps.
The shot will get there before the bird hears the gun go off.

I never chronographed one after killing a couple of chronographs with the 12-GaFH 3.85".
Now that I have a Garmin XERO will try to do so.
See if it is confused by the lack of a shotcup wad,
only a swarm of shot, a card wad, and a single gas check.

mgstucson,

When I first tried it, I used a second gas check as the over-powder wad.
Thinking it might scrape lead too.
But I found patterns were much better without it.
It may act as a spreader smacking the shot in the rear.
And does it go sideways while going down the bore or only after it leaves the muzzle ?
Just a thin card wad over powder was better, and the one inverted gas check
roll-crimped at case mouth over a full shot charge.
I like the idea of some glue around the edge of the case mouth/gas check.
Maybe fingernail polish or primer sealant, on primer too.
The shot shells will be carried a lot for the occasional use.
Yes, protruding shot capsules are too delicate.
This is good information on shot patterns in rifled long guns. Thanks.

Sodium silicate, water glass is what it used to be called. Clear as water and dries hard
Also good info. Thanks

Well, yeah! The 458 Win Mag is basically a 45-70 on steroids. Straight case, 500 grain bullet, you know, just like a 45-70. A bit more oomph. Same bullet, just 50% faster. But pretty much useless as far as cartridges go. Very few people even in Africa use it due to failures to penetrate on dangerous animals, and too much recoil to use it every day. Way over-rated. 416 or a 375 are a better choice.

I believe you opened your mouth and stuck your foot in it, we are talking about grouse and snake loads, state side.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
