458 Swift A Frame 450 Grain for Buffalo

Never heard of Cutting Edge Bullets before. A quick google search and they look like they would be very effective on game. May need to order some and try them out.

They are designed for straight line penetration, the Raptor (hollow point) is designed to penetrate a couple of inches before the petals, 6 of them, spin off in 6 different directions inside. The shank keeps on a straight line and usually exits. The petals do an amazing amount of damage inside the animal.
Using my .500 MDM in Australia last year, I took 3 Water buffalo. All the shanks exited and the insides of them was close to mush. Took a Giraffe in '17 with my .458 Lott and a 420 gr Raptor. It was a quartering too me shot and at the shot, the Giraffe rose up on his rear legs far enough that we thought he was going over backwards. He recovered and went maybe 20 yards before collapsing.
The .500 MDM puts that 420 gr out at 2430 fps.

Do one or more of the petals ever fail to detach, thus effecting straight line penetration of shank?

I have shot only one buffalo in West Africa with the cartridge 460 WBY-Magnum and a 450gr Swift A-Frame bullet. The muzzle velocity was at about 2550 fps. Unfortunately I had a exit and could not see what happened to the bullet.

Balistic calculator shows 1.7 inches less drop at 2400 fps than my usual load of 2195 fps. This is at 300 yards. My usual load is a 515 gr solid.

500 gr bullet will perform better and the trajectory is pretty much the same- a rainbow. I looked at it a while back and decided it wasnt worth it.

I was thinking more along the lines of maybe needing to shoot over 100 yards on an Eland or whatever may present itself when hunting buffalo. To me, it would make the 458 more versatile. In reality I'm trying to justify my recent purchase of a 458 Lott when I already have two 416s in the safe.
400gr A frame does a great job in the WM, but 450 is also good; 450gr is preferred in the Lott.

Since I have discovered the Cutting Edge Bullets, I use them exclusively for dangerous game! Can go down with the weight to a 450 gr Solid and pair it up with the 420 gr Safari Raptor. The Raptor is a brass monometal in a hollow point design. It is absolutely devastating on big and nasty critters.
This is the bullets I use in 375 and 458 as well. I find it performs much better on game than the Barnes

I don't want to divert the thread but we had to move out of our house recently for a temodel and i had to move all of our weapons. I have never hid any purchases from my wife but over 30 years, you do accumulate alot of guns.

Let's just say she was shocked at the volume of firepower we have in our house. There even might have been some commentary to the likes of, "i can't imagine you need any more guns."

One of my issues is the rule of never selling a gun. I should sell/trade some...but i didn't do that with my kids so...

When that number of firearms questions has come up in the past from my wife, I ask, how many pairs of shoes do you need? (She had 70 pairs when we got married).

Next, I ask the comparison to collecting Harleys or if I had a $70K boat. Has not been a problem since.

Regarding the OP question on .458 bullets, the reason I kept my 458 Whitworth as my only DG rifle, is the availability of these great modern bullets in lower grain weights, currently practicing with Woodleigh 400 grain SPs.
Looking forward to trying some CEB Raptors soon.
