Recently, I purchased HS Precision in caliber .458 Lott with 1:10 Twist for hunting bears and moose as well as for future trips to Africa. This is an excellent weapon and an excellent caliber, but I wanted to hunt with it more, as well as at night with a thermal imaging sight on deer, wild boars, wolves, beavers and other animals. The power of the cartridge is too great for these animals and,
Also, I was afraid that my sight would not withstand strong return. Then I thought about assembling cartridges with a heavy subsonic bullet that would be sufficient for these animals and would not kill my sight.
One guy posts a video deer and coyote hunting with a subsonic bullet of 570 Grain Controlled Factoring Bullets from Lehigh Defense. But he used a caliber .458 SOCOM with 1:8 Twist.
Okay, I thought, why not make such a bullet and try it in Lott?
My friend and I revered special literature on the movement of bodies in the atmosphere with subsonic speed and painted a bullet. Then they made it on a computer with computer control from copper and go - to experience) We have a weight 475 grain.

The result surprised us all!
Russian gunpowder Salut-4 (19 gr)- analogue Power Pistol and Large Rifle primers give 1000 feet per second. The gunpowder takes very few places in the sleeve, but at the same time, the speed difference in groups is 9-13 feet per second! And bullets arrive at 25-30 millimeters per 100 meters! I checked at speeds from 850 to 1240 feet per second аnd always bullets flew by no more than a 30 millimeter circle of 100 meters!
I immediately set up my thermal imaging sight and went hunting. In 2 days I got 2 deer and one beaver. Now I'm looking forward to when I go hunting for wild boars! Then I can shoot in the field at 200 and 300 meters.

Would love to hear more details about this. Very interesting concept.

The recoil is similar to .223

Is that a Pulsar thermal? That would probably be the only one I'd pick to withstand the recoil.

Whaaaaaaat!?
OK, the recoil is compatible with the thermal--how is with your shoulder. I'm guessing it is more of a push than a jolt at those speeds?
Good to hear from Russian fellow hunters. Hunters are always good people!

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing this.
Did you machine the bullet on CNC machines?
In my simple mind, I would think the trajectory drop would be similar, as a .22 Long Rifle at subsonic velocity?
This is not at all like 22 .. Due to the large mass, the bullet very slowly loses speed even at a large distance. Please look at the table that I placed above.

So, the cases is ready.
Previously, I would have to buy cases, bullets and other things in a store in the USA or Europe. Now, thanks to the sanctions, I buy brass or cuprum in Russia, rent a CNC machine in Russia and receive, for example, cases at a price of 0.48 euro per piece) or a bullet at a price of 0.6 euro 1/piece)
Sanctions are the best that could be invented!

In order to make a shot even cheaper, I prepared lead bullets weighing 405 and 370 grains. I will load them into cases 300WM after fireforming. These bullets will experience two types - painted and covered with copper. They can be used for entertaining shooting and shooting small predators (foxes, raccoon dogs and others)

The results of the shooting of lead bullets:
With a copper coating did not fly, a large scatter, even took photos.

405 grain painted:
12.5 grain of gunpowder - 45 mm/100 meters, 955-975 f/s
13.0 grain of gunpowder - 40 mm/100 meters, 980-995 f/s
13.5 grain of gunpowder - 40 mm/100 meters, 1020-1032 f/s

370 grain painted:
12.0 grain of gunpowder - 50 mm/100 meters, 960-990 f/s
12,5 grain of gunpowder - 60 mm/100 meters, 980-1000 f/s
13.0 grain of gunpowder - 50 mm/100 meters, 1005-1011 f/s

Based on the results, I will use 405 grains, 40 mm is a good result for lead per hundred in my opinion.
