if you want to use a 30/06 length mag for a 416, there is definitely a place for the 416 taylor.
any 7 rem mag, 300 win mag, etc only needs a new barrel, and possibly not even mods to the feed rails to work perfectly.
good economics.

I’m definitely going to buy/build a .416 Taylor eventually. I’ve got plenty of .458 WM brass to form the .416 Taylor cases, and have ordered some Lee .416 Taylor dies. I like the fact this cartridge fits in a long action vs. a magnum action receiver. As far as this .416 Lott/ Taylor thread goes, I was just intrigued by the fact that it could work, but with all the current/proven .416 cartridges available, there really is no point other than it’s an interesting concept to me. Parker Otto Ackley (P.O. Ackley) was a gunmaker/wildcat cartridge developer genius! .450 Watts of 1960 as an example. .458 caliber. Could shoot the Watts, .458 Lott or .458 WM? But why did he develop this wildcat in the first place? Not many choices back then except the .458 WM (1956), .460 Weatherby (1957?). It served as an alternative to the few .458 cartridges available. Unlike my misguided thought/attempt at a .416 Lott using .458 Lott cases formed in .416 Taylor dies with the many .416s available today. But I/ we dream on! Some wildcat cartridges are useful/necessary and some (many) end in obscurity!

I have often thought of a 416 cartridge suited to the Winchester highwall original action.
it would need a rim and a lesser diameter due to the barrel thread shank diameter to fit the the action.
such a cartridge could easily be pormed by necking up the 9.3 x 74.
it would make a powerful single shot.
then I discovered it is virtually the same as the 40/85 ballard from the late 1800s.
so this could be a good source of brass for that as well.

Get a copy of Cartridges of the World by FC Barnes. Doesn't even have to be a current edition. Peruse the various sections. Each section has cartridge specs at the end.

This is very interesting! I was trying to think “outside the box” when I posted this thread, and I think you are too. I believe whether good or bad, efficient, economical, necessary or NOT, the shared ideas, thoughts and opinions of others here on AH is crucial to the potential development of a new cartridge (or not?) or maybe resurrecting one from the past.
