I've been impressed with the performance of all copper projectiles for general hunting. I'm preparing for an upcoming hunt which may involve both plains game and possibly a buff. A local company makes all copper .458 projectiles in both 400g and 450g weight. Both projectiles have an excellant BC (.363 and .368 respectively). The 400g can probably be driven a bit faster than the 450g (loads still to be developed and tested).

My only question is whether a 400g all copper projectile would have enough reliable penetration for buff.

You are not specifiying if these bullet are expanding or solids?

If solids I don't think you need a solid at all most mono expanding bullets expand and penetrate enough that an solid is obsolete.

Then I would rather stick with 450gr to the lighter 400gr as the added weight will help with penetration.

An all copper will have the penetrating potential for Buff. Is it red copper?
I’ve used Peregrine, and Dzombo which are solid copper and the old PMP 286g solids in a .375.
It should have a flat meplat and not a round nose.

450 or even 480 gns if you can get them.

I assume these bullets have been tested on buffalo and big animals in Australia so there is load data and performance bar being set??

I would have no concerns about shooting a buffalo with a premium 400gr bullet caliber .458 like for example the TSX, as long as there is an acceptable impact velocity. Something like this can certainly be achieved with the 458 Lott cartridge.

I shot a buffalo in West Africa with the cartridge 11,2x72 Schüler and a classic 401gr SP bullet, from far not a premium bullet. It was possible with just one shot, but a cartridge like the 458 Lott certainly provides even more performance with a premium mono metal bullet of the same weight.

Chopped up the whole thing as I kept hitting the 240 character limit...
Found out the trigger word in the end... It was muzzle or velocity. dropped them and it posted.:)

2,822fps, ES 8.2
This compares favorably to 7 Rem Mag. with less powder & recoil.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS FOR MY RIFLE, ALWAYS APPROACH A NEW LOAD CAUTIOUSLY!!*
Rifle is a Pierce long action, 32" 1:8.5 twist Swan{Au} barrel
{You will want a 1:8.5 to run the heavies but can get away with a 1:9}
Peterson .280AI brass, CCI 200 primers, 56.5gr of 4831SC, 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I know that this thread is more than a year old but as a new member I thought I would pass along my .280AI loading.
I am shooting F Open long range rather than hunting but here is what is working for me and I have managed a 198.14 at 800 meters.
That is for 20 shots. The 14 are X's which is a 5" circle.
