Does anyone on the board shoot the 450 TSX Flat Base out of their .458 WM or Lott?

How about compared to other copper monos available or compared to the 350 TSX Flat Base?

Thoughts... discussion?

Why not trim the case back to 2.760" and load up some 500 grain TSX in the 458LOTT?

Now that would be a THUMPER!

I’ve used CEB Solids on 3 eles. 2 BBW #13s 570 gr 0.510” on frontal brain shots penetrated >3 ft and on the 3rd the 400 gr 0.423” shot through the chest and exited.

Hope to use the 0.458” 500 gr BBW #13 next summer.

I shot a kudu with a 350 grain TSX from my 458 win mag. The shot hit both shoulders and was sticking under the hide on the off side shoulder. Perfect mushroom.

@Tokoloshe Safaris Lon Denny posted a couple weeks ago of a PH recently culling elephants with a .458 and TSX. If I recall, the PH made brain shots.

I couldn't find Lon's post but maybe he will comment when he is in camp.

More interested in expanding bullets that can do double duty on plains game and DG with a single .458 WM rifle.

Approximate chart with the 350 TSX out of a 20" barrel;

More of this info would be of great interest. There are many shooting the 300 TSX out of .375's on buffalo, so I would think the 350 & 450 TSX in .458 would do very well. The 350 may well be a better all around choice... or perhaps one scope zeroed for the 350 TSX and a second zeroed for the 450 TSX... or just calculate the "come up" at the range and make the adjustment on the fly.

I shoot the 450gr in my Lott @~2330 fps. When I go for buffalo again, that’s what I’ll be using.
Just an FYI: I tested some expansion / penetration of the 350gr Barnes TSX @~2165 fps out of a Ruger #3 .45/70 at 100 yds. Minimal expansion,
I also shot them out of the Lott @ 2485. I ran out of vertical adjustment in a Leupold 1.5-5x. I couldn’t get it lower than ~1.5” high.
In both the .45/70 and the Lott the 350gr gave 1” or better accuracy.

I shot a cape with a 458 with the OAL length of the Lott... using the grooves as a cannular. It was a 450 solid but then shot the dead cape with a TSX at less than 15 ft and retrieved the bullet. One petal gone after plowing through 4 feet of buff and its full stomach contents. Great bullet.

Was the TSX a 450 grain?

Was the TSX a 450 grain?
Yes. After extensive testing of a whole bunch of bullet$, I settled on the 450's both TSX and Banded solids. I was using a CZ 550, so I could load the 458s out to Lott length. I had also shown this to be practical with a Win 70 with the swap of parts to those of a 375H&H... easy to do. Muzzle velocity was 2475 fps ... so the TSX hit the buff at a very fast speed. The Barnes TSX and Solid fulfilled the dream of Weatherby in having a bullet tough enough yet a killer. The banded solid saved my bacon on the buff. I shot a wildebeest with a 300 grain TSX with a 375 H&H Win 70... quarter frontal at about 75 yards. One shot kill with the bullet destroying the lungs.

I have plans for the 450 TSX in my 458 Lott for exactly the purpose you asked about; large PG and buff. I haven't used it for that yet but have no concerns about it. I doubt any bullets will be recovered as I expect exits from any angle just like when I do this with the .416 Rigby and 400 TSX.

Lott velocities will bring out the best in the Barnes. You may reach 2500 fps with ease. I used Benchmark powder from Hodgson. If you can get Varget... try it. Somewhere on this site is my Magnum article on what I did. Good hunting!!!

I think Barnes missed the mark by not offering a .458" 400gr TSX. It would be a more ideal weight for the 458 WM and would be a solid choice for the 458 Lott.

As it stands I personally would not use the Barnes TSX for the 458 WM.

Yea that’s interesting. I have 350, 450 and 500 grain .458 TSX but I’ve never seen a 400 grain. Seems odd.

You can say that, but my primary loads are 500 grain at the moment... these are just not ideal for a combination load... 200 yards is pushing it, more like 150. I would like more margin if it will double for plains game. Ideally, I will also not mess with two different loads and/or two different scopes.

I load both the 450 TSX and the 300 TSX in my 458 wm+
Its a plus because my Model 70 allows for longer case overall length as does the long free bore design of the 458 win mag.
I use Ram shot TAC for the 450 and H4198 for the 300.
450 is at 2365 fps and the 300 is at 2770.
The TSX is proven as long as you don't go under the expansion velocity. This is why I also load the 300 so it is still fast enough to open at longer ranges of plains game ,although with 458 caliber it really doesn't need to except on the larger plains game.

For our Australian members, Atomic29 Projectiles make a very nice .458" 400g HP mono. The specs claim a BC of .363which augers well for retained velocity. They also do a similar design of 450g HP and a FNHP (massive hollow point) of 300g.

I have used 450 TSX in my Lott and was not overly impressed, shot a Watusi.

I have also used 450NorthFork, shot my lion with it. Was very happy with the performance. Bullet had over 4' of penetration on the big cat.

NorthFork bullets seem to shoot better groups more consistently. They are the best of both worlds it feels like. Bonded lead upfront, mono in the back.

Both being push to 2350fps.

YMMV

What powder are you using?

I only tested 3 rounds of 300 grain JHP loads out of my 458WM charged with RL7. I only did 3 because the COAL at 2.93", per Hornady Reloading Manual, is too short to function properly in my Interarms Mark X. The bullets would not chamber from the magazine.

I also tested Barnes Banded 500gr Solids and Woodleigh 500gr PPSN using IMR 4227 and H335 respectively, both loads produced an average of 2000+ fps MV.

I'll be using the Barnes and Woodleigh loads for buffalo next year. I'm looking for a PG recipe for PG ie warthog, bushpig.

Has member used cast 405gr bullets in their 458WM?
