416 WSM first range trip

That plastic tip adds a lot of length in a short action. I’ve thought of turning it off in a lathe? I think the standard all metal bullet design is better for large calibers. Really what am I going to gain with a BT in my little carbine?

My 416 B&M is based on the WSM action. The case is 2.240, from RUM brass. I am not having any issues at all with the 225s seated as you saw in the photo, COL is shorter than the 3 inches required for the magazine box and action............Oh wait, I didn't show a full photo of the loaded B&M .......

You should not have any issues loading it in a WSM case.....

Thank you, what is the Length of the Raptor bullets with the tip?
It looks like you can put the tip on or off?
I have a Weatherby Vanguard/Howa short action that limits cartridge length around 2.86”.
Bullets around 1.250” seem to work best in my 2.1” WSM case.
From this forum it seems Winchester and Sako short actions can handle 3” cartridges? I think you mention that on the B&M web site?

1.320" and you can remove the tip. You are correct, you might have issues if 1.250 is the max length of a bullet for your action. You are also correct I use nothing but Winchester M70 Control Feed guns, and they can take a 3" COL. When it comes to something other than a Winchester M70 I become rather ignorant.

Maybe take a look at 300 TSX, 325 North Forks, 340 Woodleigh, or 350 Swifts? All flat base bullets, which I much prefer.

Thanks for the help. Bullet selection in Canada is limited. Speer and Barnes seem easier to get and maybe Woodleigh in 416 cal. Flat bases seem the way to go for maximum powder space in my set-up. Speer 350gr Spritzers, Barnes 300gr TSX and if I can get them 340gr Woodleigh Spritzers are my best choices for optimum powder space.

Final loads on 416WSM with SPEER 350gr bullets, had to return Chrony, no speed data:
I) IMR4895 66gr full or slightly compressed.
Ii) W748 66gr also full or slightly compressed.
Tried 67gr with both seemed too hot and compressed load.
Accuracy not as good but that’s probably the recoil effect I have to get used to if I want the speed.

My Blue Collar Custom Rifle Set, anView attachment 616470 M96 Mauser 6.5 x 55 and the new 416WSM in a used Weatherby Vanguard SA both in plastic Ramline Stocks. Nuttin fancy just Tools to get the job done.

How does that 416 feed from the Vanguard action? Any modifications needed?

Just a barrel change and stock milled out for the bull barrel contour (0.8”dia at muzzle) , no action work. Feeds good as long as I keep cartridge length to 2.860” max.
3 in the hinged floor magazine.
Only tried 3 bullets 350gr Speer, 400gr Hornady SP RN, 350gr Barnes TTSX at 2.870”.

Tried some Barnes 300gr TSX FB bullets, they are basically the same dimensions as the Speer 350gr lead bullets. Loaded 63gr IMR 3031, OK, and 67gr W748, OK.
Both full case not too compressed at 2.860” O.A.C.L.
Impact about 4” higher at 100m than the 350’s
No chrony.

Good, I have to shoot more. I was more focussed on pressure signs. I find the IMR 3031 powder shoots best in my gun. Too bad I got a good price on 2lbs of W748, but it is good enough for moose or bear out to 200yrds.

I find all this fascinating- necking stuff up to make more efficient cartridges, etc, which is probably why I have a 35 Whelen. I do not have the inclination to try something new for myself though and stick to stuff that is fairly well established (another reason for the Whelen) so I do not know much about this. My question is, if you are necking up the WSM case to .416, which seems to be fairly common, why has no one done a .425 WSM? Given the love that the .404J gets, it seems like you could duplicate the .425 WR with the WSM case and not have the negatives associated with the WR, could you not? Is the .425 diameter bullet too big to give a sufficient shoulder or is it simply that no one has bothered to try this?

I would imagine it’s based on the better bullet selection in 416 caliber. Also, like you said, less shoulder as well.

This was why I went with .416. No problem to make a 425WSM, but far fewer projectiles to choose from. Ballistically they would be essentially identical.

Yes, better bullet selection was my reasoning. 300-350gr bullets work best in my Short Action rifle. I dont think anyone makes bullets under 400gr in 425 caliber. I can get copper or lead in 416.
