416 Rigby with a 450grn bullet

You may also get under expansion, destabilization etc. Bullet design also plays a roll so same weight woodie vs a rhino will be shorter.
For me 300gr 9.3, 340gr 375H&H, 410gr 416 Rugby, 420gr 404Jeff, 570 or 600gr 500 Jeff at as close as possible to 2300 fps in the right bullet are deadly on dg. Far more reliable than the light weight low sd high velocity brigade.....
But that is just my old school in field experience.....
We are both in the same camp bru. I have never seen the point of pushing things to fast. I reload for accuracy not speed. Once I find my load thats when I chrono it to work out drops etc

I can agree with IVW on the 330 sd but want as close to 2300 fps as possible. So I would stay with the 400/410 gr.

Got ya so .330 is the magic number. I suppose to high and your going to get over penetration (that always makes me laugh (not that it happen just how it sounds)).
SD is what made old classic calibers work and is the only saving grace for the 458 WM.
It is well known that a bullet with a SD of over .30 is what is recommended and what has always worked on DG. When you get to .330 and slightly over is when bullets really start to perform on especialy African DG. Going too high could cause other issues again.
Pick your caliber and use a bullet as close to .330 SD you can find. Obviously of premium quality design. 410gr .416 is already there.....
For the sake of discussion I will say that SD is important if you are shooting RN Lead Core Solids Today's Modern Bullets turned from Brass with large Metplat percentage to caliber 65 - 70% and a proper Nose Profile with SD a under .300 will out perform the above mentioned Bullets ..

Not so 65% is min 70% is ideal.
I dont use old round nose jacketed bullets. I use solid brass bullets with a 70% meplat. They will out penetrate any lighter bullet everytime. I prefer the mentiined bullet weights.
High SD, velocity as close as possible to 2300 fps, and the right meplat gets the job done.

I have some .375 caliber Woodleigh 350g HD softpoints. They travel at a sedate 2500 fps out of my 7.5 lb (with scope) 375 Weatherby. Looking forward to trying them on elk, just will make sure there's no elk behind the elk I'm shooting at.

dont bother slap that elk with the 500j

It's also a toss up between a 416,470ne,500ne and a 500 Jeffery
If you want a double I'd go with the .500NE, for bolt a lot of folks here like the .500J. Of course, that is assuming you want a DG rifle. .416 would be more versatile as it can be used for PG as well.

It would be a go to DG tool so I can see your point about going with a 500

I've never really been interested in heavy for calibre projectiles until I got my Rigby and started playing around with all different weight projectiles. I went with heavy for calibre in my 450 Rigby this year when hunting buffalo, 550 grn Woodleighs at 2240fps, unbelievable performance. I doubt I will ever use a different load in my Rigby for buffalo now.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
