Good deal but it looks to be made for a narrow profile barrel. I presume .416 caliber will be a heavy profile. #5? Make sure you are satisfied with quality before tapping the barrel.

Most use 1/4" threaded rod for wrist reinforcement. Because my 404's stock was very slim, I used 3/16" unthreaded steel rod. Here's a photo of the jig I made with drill in place. The rod cut to length is bedded with JB Weld.

You have a good eye for details

I was thinking the sights would be lapped in order to fit the radius of the larger barrel.
Wrap the barrel with sand paper and then work the sight on it until its a moderate to a good fit.

My goal is trying to buy the best quality for a moderate cost.
May have to do some extra work to obtain that goal but I dont mind the work ... I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and also knowing I put some work and sweat into my gun

Nice ... I bet it took a bit of thought and time to get that jig calculated with just the right alignment .... thumbs up to ya

After my stock comes, I will take much better pictures than the website, do some measurements for key areas of the stock such as the wrist area and then see what you think about it .... hopefully it doesnt need reinforced but if it does need it, you would have a good idea show me how to do it

Whitewood can be birch or poplar. Both are relatively soft hardwoods with short grain. You can be pretty much assured that stock will break through the wrist unless you reinforce it. Have you bedded stocks before?

Nice tool you have there. I never seen ones with digital readouts .... just dial indicator on the pair I use

I've only dont minor fitment to a stock and so nothing like I will be having to learn with this project.
So for now, I have only been watching a lot of the gunsmiths including MidwayUSA with Larry Potterfield and some of those do-it-yourselfers on youtube.

I was going to build a multi barrel setup on the 223 case head, from 17 fireball to .25x45, I had five chamberings picked out, ended up with a rem in 17 fireball and a howa 223, instead. Would have been easy, Just unscrew the barrel, screw the new one one drop in a "go-gauge " tighten the nut, adjust the scope to preset clicks, and away you go. May still do it one day.

Don't pay any attention to him. I can probably sell my "piece of junk cobbled together from internet parts" for a bit more than I have in it. But just a bit. This is the original stock bought off an auction site for $125 Canadian. And the original scope, a 1972 3x Weaver recently retired from my "homemade" Springfield 03A3.

Then last year I found a prettier one on GBroker and, like you, needed something to do during the winter so I bought it. About $300 if I remember correctly. When finished with the stock, I upgraded the scope. It's a new 1-4x Bushnell from eBay for an amazing $150. Sure, I could have put expensive Zeiss glass on it but why? It's a short range gun. If this scope doesn't work out, there's always the iron sights as backup till I find something else.

I have lots of money now but from humble beginnings. Dad taught me the value of doing stuff for myself. And I've never stopped learning. We don't learn anything paying others to do it for us. This is something you will be able to build on over the years if you want. It's a foundation.

I would recommend upgrading the Remington 700 extractor to an AR-15 for added reliability.

Converting REM 700 extractor to Sako or M16 style extractor will change the angle of ejection. That type extractor is added to edge of bolt lug. The extractor works in opposition to the ejector plunger that is at a fixed location in the bolt face. The effect of that change is a higher angle of ejection where spent cases will likely be ejected into scope or scope mount. Approach that modification with eyes open.

Many are going to be hesitant to offer advice in this thread. The OP seems “sensitive” to any criticism and seems to be looking for ideas that agree with his. I tend to agree with @Uncontrolled_round_feed on this one so will leave it at that.

I see nothing wrong with any project build as long as the end product is safe and reliable. Often projects like this are for fun and to learn from the process. What we can afford has nothing to do with it, the point is entertainment during the winter months, and to learn about gunsmithing. In a nutshell this is what the OP stated.

We've all known guys that had more money than they knew what to do with that could drop cash on a Bugatti, Lotus or Ferrari, but noooo, they spend their spare time in a garage wrenching on a 1969 Chevy Chevelle. If that's what makes the man happy, I say have at it.

Well said, Ontario Hunter
My dad raised me and my brothers to be jack of all trades and do our best to not pay someone else what we can do ourselves.
If we dont know how to do it, dont have the tools to do it, and/or dont have the available money to afford it, then start pulling together whatever resources possible and add in the good ol' fashioned motto of good things still come to those who need to wait for them.
....and it's not long after we would veer away from those humble attributes that we open the door to allow impatient, irrational, and otherwise irresponsible characteristics to come walkin in on us.
