404 Jeffery - power question?

I've gotten my 400 grn. Barnes Banded Solids and the 400 grn. Swift AFs to shoot to the same POI at 100 yards. These loads were fired in my GM 98 with 23" PacNor barrel.

Speed on the SAFs with 74.5 grns of N-150, ave. of three rounds is 2244 fps., with 75.5 grns. N-150 is 2279. Both print the same. reccoil is there, but moderate compared to the 200+ fps loads I tried earlier. Loads did not deviate more than abou 7 to 10 fps.

the 400 grn. Barnes Banded Solids with 72 grns. N-150 produce 2236 fps, and with 73 grns of N-150 produce 2263 fps. and both print to the same POI as the Swift A Frame loads detailed above.

These loads were in new RWS cases and capped by Win LRM primers. Bullets seated to the cannelure and crimped with a Lee Factory Crimp Die.

Hi guys,

Just have a quick question about the 404 Jeffery...

For the people that own one - or want to own one, would you still be perfectly satisfied with the 400gn projectile at 2150fps?
Or is that old hat these days and would you step it up to 2350fps?

I think that there is something nice about the original load, but can't comment as I've never used one...

Cheers,

Russ
I load my Heym 404 410 gr at 2150 and anchored two cape buff. Breaks the shoulder and exits on the off side. Like it so well I bought a 450 400 as well.

I experimented with several recommended hand loads and liked the traditional velocity of 2150 the best. The buffalo below went 30 yards before collapsing after one shot with a 400 gr. Swift a frame.

Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
To much to political shit, to little Africa :-)
Spending a few years hunting out west then back to Africa!

Hello. If you haven't already sold this rifle then I will purchase. Please advise. Thank you.

I doubt you are interested in any trades but I was getting ready to list a Sauer 404 3 barrel set in the 10-12 price range if your interested. It has the 404J, 30-06 and 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Only the 30-06 had been shot and it has 7 rounds through it as I was working on breaking the barrel in. It also has both the synthetic thumbhole stock and somewhere between grade 3-5 non thumbhole stock
