404 Jeffery barrel length?

Greetings Ontario Hunter,

I don’t know your height nor build.
However, I am in the neighborhood of 6 feet tall and 195 pounds.
For general purpose bolt action rifle training and hunting, in my case personally, around a 22” barrel is getting close to too short (but, for bear guard jobs, 22” seems about right).
And, 25” is definitely at the barrel length limit, for my bolt action hunting rifles.
My ..375 H&H has a 25” barrel and my .458 Lott has a 23” barrel.

The .375 was made by Brno, already with the longer barrel or else, I’d have had it done with a 24” pipe on it.
There however seems little advantage now to having it cut by one inch, thereby spending good money for only an inch more handiness plus, risking the accuracy that this favorite rifle provides me as it is.
My 23” Lott balances, points and feels to be a good compromise in barrel length for a seriously powerful hunting rifle.

Unless you are extremely tall or extremely short, I agree with IvW and others here that, a 24” barrel on your .404 would be very good.
A model ‘98 Mauser, assembled around the .404 Jeffery cartridge is so classy.
And if scoping same, your vintage 3x scope seems about perfect.
I say Bravo.

Cheers,
Velo Dog.
