Any .404 Jeff reloaders here using this 390grn .404/.424 coated GC “Bengal” slugs from this company? If so, can you give a quick evaluation on performance?

In searching loads for cast bullets for 450-400, I came across this data for use with 5744 and the 404 Jeffery. I love this powder for reduced loads in all of the heavier rounds from 45-70 to 577 Nitro.

Yes, I’ve used 5744 for .404J loads and a couple of others with good results.

UPDATE: having exchanged emails with “James” @ Bengal Bullets, I’ll be ordering a batch of .424 dia slugs from a new mould that he says will put them right at 400grns once coated & gas-checked.

Per James, this is a different mould than the one for the coated & g.c.-ed 390grn bullet pictured on the BB website.

Just FYI. … I’ll update this thread once I receive the bullets.

I have some of the Bengal 390 Cast, powder coated and gas checked bullets. They weigh true and look good, but I have not loaded/fired any yet. No doubt I will before I head to Africa again.

I have used 5744 exclusively for the practice rouns I shoot through my 404J. The loads are 36 or 38 grns of 5744, Std LR primers, Norma or RWS brass and 400 grn cast and PC bullets made and provided to me by another member here... for which I am very grateful.

These practice loads are very low recoil and within DG ranges print to the same POI as the hunting bullets ( 400 grn. Swift AFs) i use in my 404. Lots of fun to shoot.

I have an order in with the Bengal guy for what he said would be 400grn/.424 boolits (coated & g.c.-ed) from a new mould he had ordered. He indicated that it would yield another 10grns to the casting and the resulting Jeff boolits will still look identical to the one picture on his website.

Although l haven’t ordered any yet, the Bengal site also showed a coated g.c.-ed .358”/.35-cal slug that interests me for creating similar practice fodder for my .350 Remington Magnum.
