376 Steyr

Anyone here have one?

Gunsmith just picked up a no name M98 (no markings at all), hinged bottom metal and 376 bbl to put one together for me. It'll be going in a synthetic stock.

Ive got 100 rounds of factory ammo, but could use some insight for hand loads from anyone using one, or just general chit chat about the cartridge.

I had a pro hunter in 376 with a 20" barrel. I love the oddball offerings and anything that's a little different. I loaded 300gr'rs and let them rip. It was a hoot to shoot amd you felt it. Fun one to tinker with.

You can load it to a little under the 375 ruger velocities, but the ruger will always surpass it. I didn't mind much as it was the challenge that had me going. Velocity didn't mean everything to me anyway.

Many call it dead, as it may be, but still easy enough to find the brass. You can even pick up some hornady loaded for about $35-$40 a box at times and practice with it and then have the brass to reload! Not that you'll burn thru that 100 of factory brass too quickly, ha!

If you look up the Hornady data you will see that in a 28” test barrel the .376 Steyr achieves the same average velocities that H&H achieved in their own .375 H&H 28” test barrel and advertised from 1912 onward!

I have had a lot of fun with my 376 Steyr Scout rifle. Nice light package with a lot of power. I know, I know, it’s not as fast as an H&H or a lot of other 375s and it will never be.

I have many range/game appropriate rifles and this perfectly fills the gap between some of them. Sorta like reaching in your golf bag for a special wedge or something. (Not that I know a F-ing thing about golf)

Used it in Zim to take a few smaller critters but used my M70 416 for buffalo, though I considered using the 376 if needed. I have hand loads for 300gr TSX at a solid 2300FPS using H4895
out of this little 19” barrel. It groups well under 2 inches at 100yrds with a VX6 1 x 6 scope. I would limit myself to about 200 yards with this setup because it's running out of gas pretty fast after that.

Been working with some 270gr TSX using the same powder and am getting pretty close to 2500FPS.

The 376 Steyr was never intended as a long range cartridge or to out do an H&H, so use it as it was intended and have fun with the little beast. Think I’ll load it up and hit the range with it this weekend.

This is going to be used in north America, mostly elk, black bear and hogs, moose (if I ever draw) and bison might be a possibility (400 whelen gets first go at either moose or bison).

I picked up the ammo for $20/box. Just happened to catch a sale. $1/rd is a pretty good price for about any gun, brass coats more than that!

Not sure i'll run 300's in it. Ive got a good amount of 235 and 250 grain bullets that'll make more sense.

Milehighshooter, I firmly believe your 376 Steyr with the right bullet/ load will knock your listed animals through the rim of their a$$. I'm planning on a Nalgai hunt in South Texas after the first of the year using 270gr bullets and this little Scout rifle. As long as I have a good rest and it's within 200 yards I have no concerns about.

Kevin Robertson spoke highly of a slightly underloaded 375 H&H--wouldn't that define the performance of the 376 Steyr? Have also read that Nilgai is excellent eating....book "Hunting in the Mountains of Nepal" said it was the tastiest terrestrial animal, ahead of Cheetal and Blackbuck. Good luck!

I have indeed read about reducing the 375 for better penetration, but ive got no personal experience. And yes, I've seen people get the 376 up to the 2300+ fpsv range. Im not trying to replace or replicate the H&H though, I've got one, no need to try and make this round something it isn't

blast from the past! I was googling load data for the 376 and this post was near the top haha. Gunsmith is dropping off the barreled action this Saturday. I knew it had been a while but not THIS long. It was a tit for tat arrangement, and he battled covid pretty hard last year, so everything took much longer. No matter, the barreled action will be here in a few days then it is time to choose a stock and metal finish, and if I'm going to add opens or just leave it scoped.

Ended up paying a much higher price for dies, again thanks covid, but hey, they're on their way. Hornady did a run of brass recently so now I have 100 rds of factory ammo and 100 pc of brass.

He also finished my 9.3x62, but I'm still deciding if i need to send it off for re-heating so I can run modern pressure (its a 1909). I have another 1909 that's going to need heat treatment, and its only $50 to have a 2nd action treated
