375 zero distance

But I also did what I always do and that once zeroed at 200 yards I shot it at 100, 50, 25 and then 10 yards to get the point of impact at those distances. Why? Because those are distances that are marked at my home range and it gives me a mental picture of the bullet's trajectory

Exactly, I don't care what the tables or programs say I want to shoot my rifle and the load I'm using and see where they go. Then after the load is worked up and I'm happy I make a chart on an index card and tape it to the stock so I have a quick reference if I need it.

When all said and done choose what ever zero you want then test at 25, 50, 75 and other major distances (say every 50 mts) out to 300mts. Know your rifle.

I agree 100% about knowing your rifle. Go out and shoot it at different distances, off sticks, laying down, kneeling, when it's cold and when it's almost too hot to touch. Then you know what to expect and if there's a problem with it you'll know before you are hunting and can get it fixed.

There is no substitute for practice. A 100 yard zero or 2-3” high at 100 gives you an idea of where the bullet should be at 300. Real life can be quite different. Wind, body position, lack of calm, Altitude, and other factors can make that 1 MOA rifle much less accurate. If your home range ends at 100, find another place to shoot at greater distances. That practice will be eye opening.

I agree that practice will show you what you need to improve on if you're honest with yourself. Go out and shoot your rifle and get used to it before you need it in a life and death situation or just to save a $40K hunt.

But as I suspected the bottom line is get out and shoot and see what works best for my intended load and application.

Yup, my first 375 H&H has 714 rounds through it and it's been a lot of fun and a great learning experience. I found stuff what needed fixing with the rifle AND me, I have good loads and some poor loads. I'm waiting for my first and probably only custom rifle, it a Winchester model 70 in 375 H&H and I'll shoot the hell out of it too.

Cant see any reason for a 400 yd shot with a 375, I prefer to hunt game. Cringe when I see the TV guys camped on a mnt top shooting PG across the valley with a truckload of sniper gear. Why? I think they are missing a huge part of safari. But that's just my feeling.

I agree if you're hunting go hunt if not shoot some steel or paper that can't get away wounded. That said there are guys that are absolutely lethal at long distances, but most shooters at 250-300 are struggling to hit a 4" circle if they're not on a bench with sandbags.

I have never understood the "lets go shoot xxxx" then they shoot one and half the time the "hunter" never even touches the animal. Those kind of guys have no clue about hunting or ethics in my view.

Everyone always thinks about the worst thing that can happen, maybe ask yourself what's the best outcome that could happen?
