375 as a 1 rifle battery

Imo the 375 hh or ruger is a perfect if you want to hunt medium and large game. That bring said, I am not a fan of hauling a 10+ pound rifle/scope all day when hunting non-eland plains game; that's just silly imo. 8 1/2 pounds provides manageable recoil and managable carry weight. That limits your 375 options. Personally I have been drooling over the Browning xbolt for a number of years now. 7 1/4 pound walnut stock rifle with a 10-13oz scope with mounts/rings is just about perfect. A spare magazine in your pocket and you are ready to follow up quickly if you have to.

I definitely understand the weight issue. IMO if the weight becomes an issue, I will just upgrade the sling to a double or “backpack” style. I’m already planning on a spring bear hunt where I will be backpacking miles in the mountains. If I can handle that, carrying just a rifle around doesn’t seem all that bad.

It is such a good choice that I actually heard of one man taking TWO, just in case one got put out of commission.

A lot of people "hear things", but are they actually true?
The counties I've looked into hunting in Africa do not allow this.
This doesn't mean it's not allowed, but please check the laws.

Two rifles per person, but must be different calibers.
However, if your wife and you each import your own 375H&H...it's fine.
Just make sure you have separate paperwork for each.

Personally, I do not see the utility in having 2 of the same caliber.
I see the utility in having a "spare", but that's what camp rifles are for.
And guess what caliber most camp rifles are in Africa....yep 375.

For a client hunter’s requirements , it is almost as if the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum was specifically designed for being the perfect “ one rifle battery “ . With today’s diverse varieties in bullet choices , this potential is even further boosted . A 300 grain bullet ( soft nosed or solid , depending upon your chosen quarry ) can easily secure even the largest Asiatic jungle elephant ; provided that your first shot is placed in a vital region .

As a personal opinion ; I do not recommend that anyone who is hunting thick skinned dangerous game alone ( such as a professional hunter or a Problem Animal Control officer) to use anything smaller than one of the .400 bores and employing a 400 grain bullet ( preferably one of the .450 bores employing a 500 grain bullet , if one is hunting dangerous game in densely vegetated terrain where 100 % visibility to make picked shots is not always an option ) .

Have owned a 375 H&H for a number of years but my African experience is limited to just 1 safari to SA in 2019. My bag included Cape Buffalo, Sable, Waterbuck, Blue Wilderbeest, Gemsbok & Eland. Some other animals I shot with my PH's 7x57 including Warthog & Nyala.

From my reading I thought the 375 H& H was marginal on the big stuff like buffalo. Now I'm convinced with premium bullets it's more than adequate. In fact it's just brilliant. I do not though agree with having different loads for it on the 1 safari - except for loading softs and solids. I used 300gr Woodleigh PP for everything and everything was a 1 shot kill except for the Waterbuck. There is a lot to he said for keeping it simple. 1 gun 1 load. Just plain works!

For 1 gun safari 375H&H is superb.
