35 Whelen Ruger Hawkeye african

Mine shoots good. 1" groups at 100 yds with the 1.5-5 scope. I hit 8" plate easily at 200yds. Its plenty of rifle for my needs.
How are you holding the rifle when shooting groups? 2hand hold or one? Firmer or normal? Just curious about technique for this medium bore. I just got this same rifle but have not fired it

Mine is easy on the shoulder, don't know how the Ruger stock transmits the felt recoil.

The Whelen is a pussy cat in the recoil department to me even with full power 250gn loads at 2,700fps.
Mine is a Savage 110 and the stock transmits the recoil straight back.
Even off the bench you can shoot it without holding the fore end, very little muzzle lift, BUT every rifle and shooter is different
When sighting in off the bench with the Whelen I usually hold the forend as well even tho I don't really need to.

Just found one of these locally and scooped it up. Got a question about the screw in the forend: does it tie into a recoil lug, or is that a place where I could mount a sling swivel if I didn't want to use the one on the barrel band?

Thanks.

The one at the very front of the fore end can be taken out and replaced with a swivel, bipod attachment etc

I need to space out what I shoot over longer periods, a result of having lots, perhaps too many things to shoot.
In my case thats a good thing since I may soon not be buying anymore guns due to a new law that may get passed here soon.
It would require a permit and training, etc just to purchase any firearm.
Well I expect it to pass and if it does and the courts dont stay it, I wont be participating in their new scheme.
I have enuf stuff to shoot to keep me busy till they throw dirt in my face.

A pussy cat? Similar recoil to your other favorite, the .243 i guess? Sorry had to poke you a little. . I’d say at least a large bobcat or small mountain lion.

“For every action there is an EQUAL, and opposite reaction” Newton’s laws of motion.

No such thing as free energy with guns shooting 250 grain pills approaching 3000 fps.

You do live that Whelen!

Sadly Ruger does not think that left handed people would buy anything other than the African in a 375 Ruger.
They also seem to think us lefties would not buy a guide gun in anything other than 375 Ruger.

Don't know about the recoil of a 243 never shot one never will.
A mate thru me his rifle and told me it was a 250 Savage. When I read 243 in the barrel it instantly broke out in a rash and started feeling very sick.
I was not at all well.
Às soon as he took it back I was instantly fine again.
Never again have I handled a 243.

Glad you survived that unfortunate incident.

To save further 243 outbreak of horror I wear a talisman when visiting fellow hunters or at the range.
It's a 35 Whelen round with a fast 25 round silver soldered horizontally across it in the shape of a cross.
So far this has warded off any 243 evil doers and has prevented and more rashes.
I still get a slight shake of the horrors when I see an empty 243 round in the bush or loaded rounds on the bench at the club. Without my talisman an empty 243 case in the bush is more dangerous than a pit full of rattlesnake. I turn into a bigger idiot than I already am.
Even intense psychological counseling has not helped me overcome my hatred for that round. Fortunately it Helps my anxiety when I type 243 in my missives.
When it comes to Newton's 3rd law of motion the Whelen recoils like a pussy cat. You just choose the size of the pussy you wish to feel. To me it's a small comforting pussy cat.
I hope this helps you understand this situation.

I replaced the trigger spring and fitted a red pachmyar recoil pad to my 35 Whelen African. Made it much better. Planning on getting the Alaska Arms extended floor plate too. Shoots excellent too with Hornady Superperformance. Have some Barnes that I have not tried yet.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
Currently doing a load development on a .404 Jeffrey... it's always surprising to load .423 caliber bullets into a .404 caliber rifle. But we love it when we get 400 Gr North Fork SS bullets to 2300 FPS, those should hammer down on buffalo. Next up are the Cutting Edge solids and then Raptors... load 200 rounds of ammo for the customer and on to the next gun!
