Just wondering what people think of the 338 winchester magnum for lion? Or would you be more inclined to go with a 375?

Cheers Shaun

Welcome to AH Shaun.

Just take that .460 and you'll have it all covered. :)

The inclinations:

Namibia
5400 Joules (Lion, etc.)

South Africa
minimum of .375 caliber for dangerous or big game hunting. Some mins legislated.

Tanzania
.375 caliber for dangerous game

Zambia
.338 for lion as minimum suggested by some
.375 caliber for dangerous game

Zimbabwe
.338 mag as minimum on lion. Although .375 is mentioned often.

Thanks for that.

Yea I bought that 460 on impulse really I like it just a bit of fun. Been to Africa many times but not for hunting yet. I plan on going on a hunt there some time soon as well as Alaska and possibly Montana as well as NZ that's the plan anyway.

Welcome to AH Shaun hope you enjoy it allot here.......!!!!

I'm with Brickburn... As a ph I would prefer the 375...although I feel the 338 would be adequate one can never disregard the larger wound channel provided by something like a 375...

I must admit on any cat I am a major league fan on the 340 and 378wby's.... The wound channel provided by something such a Hornady... Matched with the hydrostatic shock is a stone cold killer... :)
My best always...

If you shoot both rifles equally well, then take the .375...a confident shot is the most important. Follow-up's on big cats are not fun..!

I prefer the .375, can do the same as the 338 and much more.

Yea I only mentioned the 338 because that's what I have in Mod 70 Extreme Weather stainless steel. Great riffle by the way. But I can see why a 375 would be better.

Never turn down an excuse to get a new rifle!!!!...............:huntingrifle::whoo:

Yep I agree ive just got a much bigger safe to so plenty of room in there :elch:

And adding a M70 Safari Express in .375H&H would be a great addition to the other M70. If you go this route, I've got a 250gr North Fork and a 300gr Swift A-Frame load that work well in mine that I'd use either on lion.

Same rifle : fabulous rifle ! Winchester is back ! :agree:

Maybe 9.3x62 Mauser or 9.3x64 Brenneke but european "metrics" are not "welcome" in East Africa .... "marketing" laws ! :chaplin:

Nevertheless .375 H&H ,my favourite caliber , is the right choice exepted "hippos, rinos, elephants" and "very big Caffers" : there is better ...like
.416 Rigby, .458 Lott .. .450NE maybe, .470 NE sure and above ...

I would consider the 338 about ideal for Lion and unless I had Buffalo or Elephant on quota , had no plans to try for Buff or Elephant at a later date or just want a new rifle, I would not bother with purchasing a new rifle in a larger Calibre.

Ok I solved this problem! I bought a Sako 85 Kodiak in 375H&H. I love the Winchester Mod 70 but I didnt want to go with the extra weight of the safari grade version I would have loved another Extreme Weather version if they brought it out in 375 but they dont so I ended up with the Sako. Ill probably top it with the S&B 1.5-6x42 FD7 illuminated reticle. So now im all set for Africa and Alaska ill leave the 460 at home and ill go there with the 375 and 338.

Good choice ! No problem! Pics please !

A friend of me : Buf :.338WM : need ... 3 shots QUIIICK !!!... :fear: ..

Now he has a .375 H&H for Buf and take care if they are big ... The .338WM is only used for Plain Games .. not too angry ! :wink2:

I'll Post some pics when i pick it up only paid for it but havnt got it yet we have to wait 28 days where i live in Australia from the time you put the permit to acquire in and when you can actually pick the rifle up.

Good choice, I would have done the same it is way better on Lion... cant wait to see pictures!!!!

My best always

I am not saying 338 win mag is suitable for lion, what I would like to add is that the 338 win mag is my favorite caliber

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

X5i scope is perfect - thanks for an easy transaction! Buy with confidence.
Made it to Augusta Georgia yesterday for a meeting, hunt bookings are looking good for 2026 and 2027, had a great time on our Alabama safari shot a rutting deer at 200 yards with 7mm PRC near Huntsville and then headed on to Butler Alabama and semi guided my first deer ever shot a very nice broken off 8 point with hunter there and spend a few days on 1100 acres hunting preserve awesome place!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
