.300H&H 200fr Nosler Partitions?

I’ve got a custom rifle built on a Ruger no 1 action.
It’s accurate with various 180gr bullets and also 200gr Partitions.
The rifle will be used or hunting Elk, Moose, Eland, Kudu maybe the odd Mule deer.
Where I hunt 400yard shots aren’t all that uncommon.
I’m your opinion would a 200gr Partition do anything a 180gr bullet won’t?
I’ve got a bunch of partitions sitting on a shelf, and can’t decide whether I should load them or get rid of them.

I do not recall the Partition being all that aerodynamic, but if you are comfortable with the drop and drift out to 400 yards, it is certainly up to the task you describe.

Unless you are using a high BC bullet the only thing the additional 20 grains adds in my opinion is additional recoil, provided you are comparing the same bullet in 180 and 200.

I’d highly recommend leaving the NP’s for the range and using a proper premium bullet on game animals. Barnes TSX (or TTSX), Swift A-Frame and Norma Oryx are good places to start.

As for bullet weight in a .30 caliber, 165 to 220 grains will get the results you need. Depends on what shoots best in your rifle.

My wife and I have found that the Barnes TTSX 165 grain (loaded by Barnes) shoot sub-MOA in both of our 300WM’s. We tested several different bullets and weights to get to that point. It just takes time.

We feel confident enough in this setup to take any PG animal up to and including eland with proper shot placement. I’d say our current distance limit would be self imposed at 300-350 yards depending on conditions.

The extra 20gr will give you slightly better SD, and I think the Nosler would serve you well.

I took Impala & bushbuck with 200gr Partitions and both resulted in “bang flop” and wouldn’t hesitate to use them up to Eland.

FYI the Nosler Partition came to be after John Nosler had standard bullets come apart on a moose hunt with his .300H&H.

So he went to designing the partition for his .300H&H and the rest is history

As far as Eland go, For me, if I was using a 300HH W/ 200gr prt , I would want be a lot closer Than 400 yards before i would take the shot. I shot my silver metal Eland at approximately 90 yards head on. I put a 250gr 338 Nos PRT through the center of his heart and he still ran almost 3/4 mile.

I’d use 200 gr if using a Nosler Partition to make up for the weight it’ll shed, but really anything under eland 180 and 200 gr probably won’t make a difference. I have felt under gunned with eland before with 300 mag but they aren’t all that tough or thick skinned. A good shot kills them fast. I’d personally use a different bullet for hunting Africa. I like tougher bonded bullets or monos like Barnes given the option.

Go for it! I used to use 200gr Accubonds in my 300 H&H which worked fine but were never all that accurate. I switched over to 180gr Partitions during a period when ABs were unavailable and have found them to be the most accurate bullet I've tried in my rifle. I use them on all PG out to 400m with no complaints. I don't see why a 200gr Partition wouldn't be even better, provided it's accurate/groups.

Some RL-26 would likely get you close to 2900ft/s, which is 338/8x68 territory with a 200gr. Not necessary to chase that much speed but it can be done safely.

I have been using 200 gr Partitions in my 300H&H since I inherited a batch of Nosler Custom Hand Loaded Ammunition that were left to a PH as a tip by one of his returning clients.

They shot very accurately in my rifle (3/4 MOA) and I have been using them for a while. I have not shot an Eland with them yet but they work fantastically on other larger species such as Wildebeest, Kudu and Zebra.

I would say that they compare extremely well to the 200 gr Accubond that I shoot in my 300 WM and I am hard pressed to choose between them.

I have no doubt that with proper shot placement they will be perfectly capable of taking the biggest Eland.

I wouldn’t even consider it. Too many better options. The interlock isn’t bonded and is thinly jacketed. It could easily fail on bone at 300 mag velocities. The bottom third of a Nolser Partition is separated from the upper two thirds of the bullet so impossible to fully fail. Look at Barnes or Nosler Accubond if you want to look at other options.

The Interlock is a basic deer bullet. In the 180 grain .30 caliber form it’s a good choice for mule deer, large whitetails or for black bears, not much more.
The Partition is a great bullet design, not the most specialized but highly effective and versatile nonetheless, it’s not confined only to close range with a need for very high impact velocity, nor is it best kept out long for concern of bullet breakup if a shot is taken in close. That said it’s at its best when bullet weight and diameter is matched to velocity and game weight. The .30 caliber 200 grain partition is an outstanding choice for elk and moose size game (~500-1000 lb.) from 0 to 300 yards with MV in the ballpark of 2,800 fps. Should offer a small but not insignificant advantage in penetration over the 180 grain version.
One of the (many) strengths of the .300 H&H is the ability to handle a variety of bullet weights and styles with good accuracy and strong velocity. There may seem little advantage over the shorter cartridges when comparing the ballistics of light and medium weight bullets, but longer cartridges really shine when the heavy bullets are on the table.
I plan on using the 180 grain Partition in my .300 H&H for caribou and moose this year. Planning to try out the 200 grain A Frame for moose at some point but don’t have them loaded up just yet.

Nope my experience with reloading the 300H&H and 300 WM extends only to the Nosler 200 gr Partitions and Accubond as well as the Barnes TTSX 180 gr.

I would consider the Barnes a great option as well.
