I bought this ammo it is 178 gr soft point rather than the standard 180 grains.

Can anyone shed a light as to what the loaded projectiles are ,nothing is marked on the box so neither Vulkan or Oryx.

Pic of box below.

Found an ad for Norma 178 gr Oryx. The box in the ad looks different than yours though.

Thank you. 375 RF However if they were loaded with Oryx bullets you would think that it would be stated on the box itself. I will be very happy if they are indeed Oryx.
I haven't taken possession of the ammo but am assured by the seller that there is nothing on the box re bullet designation other than 'soft point'.
I am amazed that you found 178`s online as I thought that I had done a big search for no success.

Ha ha ,no im not that picky! I doubt if quickload would even differentiate.
You know it's entertaining here on AH. We discuss and argue about MOA on a 50 meter DG rifle, or 165gr vs. 168gr bullets, or one grain of powder here or there. But, in normal hunting parameters, I think we tend to overthink ourselves? I've used 225gr Remington Core Lokt bullets in my .338WM for my elk hunting. Since I've been here on AH, I now know there are better bullet choices out there. But, if someone gave me a bag of mixed 225gr and 250 gr. bullets, I wouldn't care. In most real world hunting distances and scenarios, it would make NO difference. My brother in law has taken three elk in the last four years (all under 100yds.), and can't tell me what bullets he is using! He told me he THINKS they are 180gr Hornadys in his .30-06? I, at least know what bullets I'm using. But, this is the real world, every hunting season example of many/most hunters here and probably throughout the world? Not ideal, but away from us on AH, it's probably what is happening in the hunting camps worldwide.

Agreed,i have been carrying my 9.3x64 with 232 gr bullets and a mate arrived for a hunt with new loads for me of 285Gr Alaskas, there is now a mix in the rifle lol. I shot a deer the other day with an Alaska i know this as it was the last one in the mag ha ha.
The deer dont know it either.

There is an old saying in the military....
measure with a micrometer....
mark it with a grease pencil...
and cut it with an axe.

we would all be better off to practice more, and worry less about 2 grains of bullet wt
....FWB

It's crazy, but in many cases this is what happens. My brother in law had a bag of ammo. Some had red tips (probably Hornady SSTs?), but some had pointed soft points. It didn't matter to him, he loaded them up and eventually killed his elk. I'm not anal, but at least I know what I'm loading in my rifle?

Practice, your absolutely right! But, the guys I hunt with will shoot three rounds at the paper at 100yds to check their scopes FROM THE BENCH before the season and they're done! I'll shoot a number of rounds from standing and sitting, but they won't. Nuts!

They look like the Norma American PH line. They load the s a new bullet in the 308 American PH line to make people who think the 180 grain is the top end. People see 178 and think treats less than 180 so that will be fine. It doesn't say what style it is tho.

Sambar, those were part of Normas value line that was imported here several years ago when I think Parabellum had the account. They were trying to compete with the big US makers in price. They are not the Oryx, but a standard 178gn soft point. I sold heaps back in the day and they went pretty well from memory, including sambar. But haven't used them personally.
Cheers

I can only speak for myself but for some reason when a drop of blood cost the same as that set of horns you have been dreaming about you tend to pay attention to what is in the magazine.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
