If you look back at it the good old .30-06 has killed every animal on the earth over the years. 
It was my first rifle caliber. A uncle gave it to me when I was 5 years old and I shot it shortly thereafter. I don't remember if I hit what I was aiming at but I shot it. It killed everything that I shot at from gophers to elk and it still sits in my gun safe to this day and has been used by quite a few new hunters that needed a rifle for a hunt.
And while I have retired it from general hunting because of a burnt out barrel, it still holds very found memories for me.

 Originally I was thinking/stressing over what kind of .300 mag to get and I understand the argument that I would have more options with one of those as I get into hand loading.
