How about you cheat the system and stack your magazine on top of your trigger group, shortening your rifle by about 4"? Yep, that's what Blaser did with the R8. So my 25.5" barrel handles like a 21-22" barrel. 7.75# without scope and a pleasure to carry and shoot. All the benefits of the longer barrel with none of the detractors of the shorter. Of course you pay for such things, but one can not have this cake and eat it too.

Sounds like...you need to experiment with an R8 'carbine' 375h&h and lop off 3"....

My Win M70 .375 H&H Safari Express was too 'clubby' and weighed an ounce short of 10 pounds. It is being restocked and the 24" barrel is being turned down and will be cut to 23" - the same length that I have specified on other rifles I have had built. I am looking for a finished rifle (with lightweight scope) that weighs about 9-1/4 lbs.

I found that the larger the bullet diameter, the less velocity is lost when the barrel is shortened. My .505 SRE has a 22" barrel and I have never suffered from lack of velocity with it. On the other hand, my .300 H&H Winchester Model 70 still wears the factory 26" barrel and I have never found myself handicapped by it, nor have ever found myself forced to carry it through thick brush. A lot of factors come into play in determining barrel length. My Krieghoff .375 H&H wears 24" barrels, but it is a double rifle and the overall length compares favorably with that of a much shorter bolt gun of the same caliber.

This is true, but the tin can users are getting MV back and also one has the option of taking the tin can off.

I think barrel length issues are largely related to end user shortcomings. I have never felt handicapped by a longer barrel. I have felt handicapped by a short barrel.

Yes, after paying to cut the barrel down AND paying to re attach the front sight. Not inexpensive.

The truth which so few will actually admit is that many of us are shooting rifles at and in many cases above our effective recoil limits. That said it would probably benefit many who shorten a barrel to also have it threaded at the same time and to use a silencer/suppressor/moderator at least in practice.

I amazed at @BeeMaa who regularly shoots a .375 indoors. That's with just custom molded ear plugs too. I'd be going plugs and muffs for sure.

If I am going through the trouble of shortening the barrel I am going to have it threaded for my later convenience. You never know when something like that may come in handy. Depending on the manufacturer I would likely also opt for a flash hider adaptor on the end if it were a great shortening. I'm not a fan of the brakes if I can avoid them as the blast bothers me in shorter barrels. Anything that deters you from shooting a firearm should be avoided.

Because the barrel is a full length 25.5" inches, there isn't much in the way of reverberation for us, or maybe we are accustomed to it. Everyone else at the range starts looking at us and asking what we are shooting. Kinda funny, but not unusual for the average AH member.

I was thinking of having my M70 threaded and the sights set back. Now I am thinking about having it chopped too. I wonder if 16-18 is too much. Well I shall have to measure the sight radius and think about it.

Nobody looks at me funny on the range because I'm the only patron. Although I did honest to God have a neighbor walk up to me while I was shooting my .458 Lott and say hello. He'd been standing there for a few shots before I realized it. No ear plugs and not even flinching. He'd heard the noise and knew I was home and hadn't seen me in a while. Nice old fella. Gotta love people like that.
