1885 Safari single shot rifle

Yes, both...........Damn big fun too........ Moose was a hoot, I love/hate Alaska. After 3 days chasing a big moose, I am sick of this crap, rain/cold, moose shows up, I tell guide we are shooting this moose, End of story. Iron sights, I don't see well in the brush, so moose is trotting by about 25-30 yards, I shoot, my guide thinks I shot him in the ass, but what happened I hit a 3 inch diameter tree 5-6 yards in front of the moose, blew out chunks of wood on the moose's rear end....... Running after the moose, reloading on the way, moose stops I hit him again broadside shoulder..... Moose turns, goes down. After we did the skinning, found both bullets 2 inches apart on the hide far side shoulder. One did not have its jacket. Shooting 350 Hornady back in those days, 2128 fps in that gun with RL 7. I went back to the scene, cut out the section of tree out that the bullet penetrated, brought it home and have it here to this day. I shoot lots of trees when I was in the field...... If possible I collect them. That Hornady did its job, shed its jacket and went like a laser to where it was aimed, slowed the moose down enough for me to run him down.......... That was 20 years ago, I could run faster............LOL.......

Oh yes, I looked again this morning too................ That is a nice nice looking rifle............very tempting..............
I'm with you on love/hate AK. Beautiful country, but man does the weather suck at times! I've spent roughly 24 days chasing brown bear up there, and only shot one black bear. No shot at a brown. Cold, miserable,.MOSQUITOES, damp, no fire wood, MOSQUITOES, and did I mention MOSQUITOES?

As for the Uberti 45/120, If it weren't for that cresent butt plate, I'd be placing a bid myself.

I love my single shot .375. I think more people need one.

The real question why would you custom chamber a single shot for a rimless cartridge that you have to make from difficult to source brass?
@Forrest Halley
I was asked the same question when I built my 25.
Simple answer is because I want to and can.

I was just looking to experience the odd creation of Winchester.
I have owned and shot a few Winchester Hi-walls: 32/40, 30 US (30/40 Krag), 30-55WCF,
45-70 and a .405 WCF in a Hu-wall/thick-wall presentation. I shot targets offhand with the 32-40, I had it converted to 30/40 by Keith Steigal in Gunnison, CO. I hunted deer and elk with it. I had a 38-55 which was most accurate with Lyman tang peep-sight, I took several elk with it. The 406 WCF was heavy and expensive to shoot and heavy to carry.
I never shot an elk over 100 yds. Deer I oftrn hunted in more open area and the 30/40 Krag worked fine.

That should be 38/55 not 30/55.

As I was surfing around drinking my morning latte, I saw that someone had resurrected this older thread about the 1885's that were released in 300 H&H and 375 H&H a while back. The OP was correct that they do not pop up very often. I have never seen the 300 H&H. There's 107 single shot Winchester listings on GunBroker right now & none of them are in these two chamberings.

Most of the rifles I purchase are done so for a reason: Usually it's a specific caliber, action or style that I want for a particular purpose or location. My Winchester 1885 Safari Octagon in 375 H&H was one of the few rifles that I have purchased more on a whim. I like single-shot falling-blocks & I like classic chamberings so this rifle checked both boxes. With a Zeiss Diatal Z 6x42 MC fixed scope it's a pretty simple setup that I have enjoyed plinking with. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll get to do some PG hunting with it one day.

I would always prefere a rimmed case in my guns.

Agreed. I really like my rimmed 303 British, 405 Win & 44 Mag. My 9.3x74r is especially easy to load into the breech with the scope sitting on top because the cartridge is so long.

@michael458 I had to laugh at your description of the vampires of the north, once you get out on the tundra for caribou they are even worse.

I hadn't seen this thread before so you now have me thinking about a 50 B&M again

As most already know. Uberti sells a nice repo in the Courtney stalking rifle. This one is .303 British

I have both the Ruger No. 1A & the Uberti in 303 British. I have a nostalgic fondness for that chambering ever since I killed my first deer with one. A 150gr Hornady InterLock SP and one of these rifles is an excellent choice for hunting in the southeastern woods of the USA.

Morning Rob, Any feeling for how the 300 H&H shoots? How's the barrel condition?

Hello. I see you hunted with Sampie recently. If you don't mind me asking, where did you hunt with him? Zim or SA? And was it with a bow? What did you hunt?

I am possibly going to book with him soon.
