    Longing for the old days

My apologies, feeling a bit nostalgic. When I was a young boy, my Father didn't hunt. Nor did my two brothers. I was the singular carrier of that hard-wired recessive gene. I have no idea of the how, or why. I remember clearly, as a boy, walking by a garage one afternoon, and hearing 3 guys...

CZ 550 SAFARI CLASSICS MAGNUM EXPRESS RIFLE IN 375 H&H

Ha! If you're in Alaska I'm very familiar with the conditions. Years ago I took 2 bud's on a 10 day fly-in drop camp in the Shotgun Hills for Caribou. The first nite a typhoon blew in with winds to 80. Broke our only tent pole and the tent nearly "flapped" us to death. Spent the next 4 days with...

What is the purpose of carrying a knife out in a safari..

I have only found one type of blade to he helpful. A small sterile scalpel....for digging various and sundry thorns and stickers out of yourself if necessary.

    Hi, new from California

Ha! Birds of a feather it seems. I'm in Brentwood...about 1 1/2 hrs apart. We'll have to get together at some point. I managed the oldest Duck Club in California for a # of years...the Cordelia Club in the Suisun Marsh. My best amigo has a rice ranch in Yuba City that we hunt Ducks and Geese on...

Bullets that well advertised but were not that great

I took a small baggie containing all of the pieces of four Silvertips recovered from four animals shot in Zim to the Winchester booth at the SCI convention in Reno. I patiently waited my turn to speak with the beautiful young rep working the booth. When my time came I introduced myself and...

Ha! I promise you that you're not nearly as surprised as I am. Two American Safari versions sold recently on GB for a good deal more +tax...neither anywhere near new condition, not glass-bedded, no fancy grade Turkish walnut stocks, no barrel band. I'm absolutely mystified. Going to leave it...

Obviously, these posts, and the impetus behind them, are based on "personal" experiences...positive or negative. Personally, I loaded the old Plain Jane Hornady 154 gr BTSP exclusively for my Weatherby 7mm. It reliably performed on Elk, Deer, Pronghorn, Caribou, and North Slope...

Bullets that well advertised but were not that great

On a '90 hunt in Zim I had 5 of what I would call "complete failures " of Winchester Silvertips in 375 H&H. They grenaded and were each recovered in 4-6 pieces. I don't know if it was a bad lot...or simply a horrible bullet as I never purchased or shot a single one since. I pulled the bullets on...

Exactly. Guys that want to adorn their man caves with hard- earned trophy specimens...on the cheap...are a scourge. I've advised my wife...give those close to me a deal. The leftovers? Just dig a bigger hole for my carcass and throw them in.

    Help-African European Skull Mount

When my Zim shipment arrived I was pissed off beyond consolation. My Eland, both Kudu, and Sable horns all had very clear pipe wrench/channel lock mars. Politics

The very best firearms forums, of every flavor, don't condone political sabotage on any level...for good reason. Many (most of us) join to escape the incessant drumbeat of asinine partisan political commentary that pervades every aspect of our lives. Respectfully, give it a rest...pretty please...

"Stolen Valor" - in the hunting field/industry

I'll never understand it. 25 years ago a very good friend and hunting mentor passed. His 1000 sq ft man cave (with 12 ft walls and vaulted ceiling) was absolutely "stuffed" (pun intended) with some truly spectacular hunting trophies...4 or 5 life-size Dall's Sheep, life-size Kodiak, 2 life-size...

"Stolen Valor" - in the hunting field/industry

I know better...but I'm going to. Let the hate fly...I'm thick skinned. IMHO, to equate a hunting scenario...of any kind, experience, or circumstance...to "stolen valor", demeans and marginalizes the actual offense of stolen valor. My apologies, but I take casual mention of this phrase...

Here we go again - tipping question

Follow your PH's wishes. Its more complicated than most think. While knee-deep in adult beverages on the final evening of my 21 day hunt in Zim our conversation turned to tips for staff. I assured Harry that everyone...from Bembetu (head tracker) to Olive (the lovely lady who did my laundry...

    So Bye-Bye Miss American Pie

    So Bye-Bye Miss American Pie

Landowner tags are available in several western States...but they're pretty spendy. A good amigo of mine who ranches in northern Nevada received 3-4 tags per year for a number of years. The same guy bought them all...every year...5 k each...and that was about 15-20 years ago.. Spike

    So Bye-Bye Miss American Pie

The very best we can hope for is an open mind. Put the past...and our favorites...and the " this is what my pappy and grandpappy always drank" behind us... and venture forth. Canadian, Irish, American whiskeys...always dominate the conversation. Who would have ever imagined that...ready for...
