8x57…the grandpappy of so many. Doesn’t get the love it deserves

Next decade plans NA: Bighorn, Dall, and big mule deer. And for some unknown reason, I’ve always really wanted to take a Shiras moose in Idaho. Bow hunting axis deer in Hawaii. Africa: leopard in a couple months, then elephant, then Cape Buffalo. Will sneak a kudu / nyala in there as I’m able.

My trio - from top, 25-06, 7x57, and 375H&H. They are delightful.

Not recovered on the elk. Prior year I shot a caribou and a moose in Manitoba with Nosler E-tips in a 300 WM at 350 and 300 yards respectively. Great performance. No issues. Love non-lead bullets

Lungs. I find that when I shoot critters there they die.

450 yards, 270 Win 130 grain Barnes. I think elk are tough SOBs. I’m happy with it.

Lived in Missouri, Arkansas, and Wisconsin. All pretty good options. Visited 28(?) countries so far and New Zealand wins hands down. Nice people, gorgeous country, commonwealth feel, good hunting.

7x57 is a good intersection of legality, nostalgia, power, efficiency (low recoil), availability and distinction. PRC always makes me think People’s Republic of China so it’s out. :)
