I love both my 338 rums. For North American deer species yes the are overkill. Black bear and elk do not prefer the cartridge. A frames are tougher than nails as well. I would venture to say that eland would be a worthy adversary.

if you find some it would be a good idea to buy it. I haven’t seen any in 4 years. My main elk rifle is a 338 rum 225 accubond at 3050 fps fueled by 92 grains of 7828. Been my go to load for 20 years and now it’s not available.

7828 has been “ discontinued “ I have 100 rounds of that recipe,loaded already for the fall. Also an additional 150 of the h1000 recipe.

Here’s another to look at , 300 wby, 200 grain partition 83 grains imr 7828. 3040 fps. I also get the same results with 81 grains of h1000 and a 200 grain accubond. Speeds within 2 fps of each other on powders. Weatherby brass , fed 215 gm primers. She’s a shooter.

I have been considering that exact thing. I have 2 338 rums and currently searching for a 7 rum or 300 rum in left hand to build the exact same thing. Not sure I will ever get to Africa but I’ll have the gun built before then.

I don’t see an age difference of meat quality in deer , being whitetail or mule deer. So cut right away. Elk if I can hang them, 11 days seems to be the best I have came across.

I have 4 280’s , zero 270’s people just like what they like.

No shoulder or leg bone , just 1 rib. The deer was on the move quartering towards me when bullet impacte. I since have harvested 3 more deer with this combo and yet to have similar result.

200 yard mule deer buck. 6.5-300 weatherby 140 grain nosler accubond at 3250 fps. This is the entrance. Heart destroyed,lungs were soup and bullet never did exit nor did I find any fragment. Deer traveled 40 yards and succumbed.

This is a group from my 300 weatherby with 200 grain nosler partitions moving 3040 fps. I feel conf that this can handle anything in North America , but my back up is a 338 rum shooting 225 accubond at 3100 fps.
