@Woodcarver , I think I'll try giving a week between coats of LinSpeed. Do you do anything after applying the Linspeed other than wiping off the excess?

Thanks, and that being the case, I will probably stop at the current 8 coats of alkanet oil; it is as dark as I want it to get. I'll give it a week or more to cure (since I'll be gone anyway), and then do a couple coats of LinSpeed once I get back.

I am nine coats in on the Alkanet oil (SB McWilliams London Blend) as of today, with plans to do at least an even dozen. Then I'm leaving town for a week, so I'll let it cure while I'm gone; and then maybe after an additional week of cure time, I'll finish it up with a few coats of the LinSpeed...

I actually live in North Texas currently, and we have about 15 acres near Denison that is currently under Ag valuation via Wildlife Management; and it makes a huge difference. However, I want to eventually sell it and get a bit bigger place that's further out from the DFW metroplex.

We should do this with land in Arkansas and/or Oklahoma. :-)

Thanks, and I think that is a "Chocolate vs. Vanilla" discussion. For this particular stock, some of the best wood grain is right where checkering would obscure it. I prefer to see the wood grain; and on a light duty firearm like this, I don't view checkering as very imperative. Jusy my $.02.

Funny, I was going to do the same thing... in the form of random psrt numbers and grandiose stories on precisely why those were absolutely the right sights for shooting a rifle off the back porch.

FWIW, none of the original Remington sights will hold up to the recoil of 375H&H and will likely fly back into your face after the first shot or two.

At the distances most 458 WMs are fired, I cant imagine that two less inches will make a noticeable difference. That's some good looking wood on that rifle; and if I'm reading the tag correctly, you got a solid working rifle for a solid price. Congratulations!
