    Mediums that perform

The 338 Winchester is one of my favorites. I also have a particular rifle in 338 Winchester. A buddy of mine said something similar to, that 338 just flat out kills stuff. I agree, with a proper bullet. It would still be my choice if I were a one rifle hunter for North American type game...

Powder for 375 Ruger 270 Barnes LRX

It has been maybe a year since I loaded the LRX 375 Ruger. I don't recall, but guessing with the H380 and my slightly longer COL I am compressed some. I use a Lee Factory Crimp, regardless of groove location. Though, I do not recall my loads being a rememberable compression event. I would...

Powder for 375 Ruger 270 Barnes LRX

I have been using H380 from Barnes reloading book / and online info, for the 270 grain TSX and LRX. My COL is a bit longer than theirs. I get ~ 2720 fps from a 20" barrel. The Speer #15 Manual list RL 16 with their 270 & 285 grain bullets. Of course, one would have to proceed with due caution...

Any info about a Win 70 in 375H&H

One point where it will differ from the New Haven production is the trigger. The older production has the original type open style trigger. The after New Haven production has the MOA, box style triggers.

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

The 375 H&H and the 375 Ruger have the same SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure of 62,000 psi. The Ruger has a slightly larger case capacity.

    Opinions please: Pros/Cons of .375 Ruger vs .375 H&H

This was what first attracted my attention to the 375 Ruger. No regrets. I have and had prior to the 375 Ruger, plenty of 375 H&H's in various barrel lengths blued and stainless. The 20" stainless 375 Rugers are my favorite .375 rifle/cartridge combination. The same applies for me regarding the...

Help me join the 21st century regarding scopes

I cannot speak to the ruggedness / longevity, but optically and field of view I am a fan. I have the non-illuminated Gen 2 Plex. The first generation of the Plex was definitely too thin for my liking. I am a fan of 1st focal plane #4's, but have no problem with the Gen 2 Plex.

What aftermarket stocks have you put on a Ruger Safari or Guide or Alaskan?

I have pre- buyout McMillan, Bell & Carlson, and H-S Precision. No complaints with any of them. The H-S Precision stocks, I have ordered directly from them specifically for LOP, Decelerator pad, if front sling was wanted or deleted, and what type of paint scheme. The H-S Precisions on the...

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

I have a few Swarovski and Kahles products that I really like. The 1.7-10x42 Plex gen2, the 1-6x24 EE illuminated, and the normal eye relief 1-6x24's illuminated and non-illuminated. The Kahles Helia C non-illuminated 1.1-4x24 and 1.5-6x42 are still some of my favorites. Simple 1st Focal...

What one scope could you hunt anything with….

My favorite "big" scopes top out at 10x with a 42mm objective. I do have a couple with 50mm objectives, but for my use any advantage goes mostly unseen. Everyone has their own hunting style, terrain, etc.

    Swarovski illuminated vs non illuminated

I agree. There are certainly low light and environmental conditions which make an illuminated aiming point very handy. I was somewhat forced into the illumination when I could not easily obtain the scopes I wanted with the heavier 1st focal reticles. I have a few 1st focal #4's with...

    375 Ruger

All of my Alaskans are 20". But they did produce some limited runs of stainless 23" left hand, and right hand (if I recall correctly) with laminated stock and the express sights. 375 Ruger

My most used Alaskan, with a McMillan stock, and fairly heavy 1-8x24 scope & Alaska Arms rings; is about 9 lbs 8 ounces empty. If I recall correctly, bare rifles with Bell & Carlson, H-S Precision, and the original Hogue were all around 8 lbs 1 or 2 ounces, bare rifle weight. My early non...

    416 rem, 416 rigby, 458 win

Ballistically speaking, with standard factory or standard hand loads, the 416's perform basically the same. The Rigby depending on the rifle weight / etc , may deliver a larger recoil jolt to the shoulder because of the larger powder charge. Factory ammo, rifle, and component availability for...

    375 Ruger

I am a fan of the cartridge and the rifles. I am particularly fond of the 20" stainless. I am not a big fan of the Hogue stock. It is serviceable, does provide a good grip when wet, but the forend is fatter than I care for. I have replaced those with McMillan, Bell & Carlson, and H-S Precision...

    Montana Rifle Company factory visit

Sorry, I don't have pictures. The new action pictures were posted on another forum shortly after the announcement of back in business. 375 Ruger vs 416 Ruger for an all-around rifle

I agree on the brass purchases ! That was the way that I approached the 7mm WSM, 375 & 416 Rugers. And after a couple of dry periods of annual brass runs, the 458 Winchester and 416 Remington. The same for the 480 Ruger and 475 Linebaugh cartridges, and a couple of others.

Cape Buffalo With a Magnum Revolver??

    Model 70 extractor problems

My personal opinion, is the true Mauser extraction system, where you cannot jump the extractor over the rim of a cartridge in the chamber, has to be the most positive. As most people state, barring an extractor breakage, that brass or a piece of it is coming out, even if you have to use your...

    Ruger M77 7x57, is this a mistake?

I have an older M77 Round Top 7x57. I bought it used from a pawn shop. I replaced the floor plate which was cracked where the screw goes through it. And it shot the Norma factory loaded 154 grain (if I recall correctly) very well. Well enough that my neighbor, which was at the range with a...

375 Ruger vs 416 Ruger for an all-around rifle

Maybe the .338 version will sell, with PRC tacked onto. Apparently necking the 375 Ruger to .338 was not on Ruger's sales plan. I thought a 338 Ruger should give pretty much 340 WBY ballistics from their 3.4" action. I guess that hunting field was crowed enough with existing hunting...

    350gr ttsx in 416

I think the .416 TTSX would be an excellent bullet for moose. I have killed a couple with the 350 TSX and one with the 350 TTSX. Both are accurate in my rifles. The TTSX, of course has a bit better bc. No complaints as to bullet performance with either. I am going to try the CEB 325 grain...

New Life for an Older 458 B&M..............

That is only a small snapshot of the bullet combinations that you tested for me in the different.458 cartridges. I think the 458 B&M at its case length, and the 500 B&M at its longer case length make for fine cartridge platforms for compact rifles with some diameter and horsepower. This I...

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

In the case of my MRC 458 Lott compared to my 458 Winchester Model 70, at equal COL with the same bullet; the Winchester is going have / provide an additional .1" bullet jump. Which I suppose can be your friend or foe, depending on what bullet and how you are loading it. A plethora of choices.

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

Thanks for the data Toby. Certainly some variances out there on both the 458 Winchester & Lott throats. Certainly enough differences in some of both, to legitimize Riflecrank's classifications of Specials, etc; in both cartridges. The CZ 458 Winchester / Lott that I have is certainly a horse...

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

    Thank you. If I converted the COL to inches and rounded off properly: 458 Express, 94mm = 3.701" 458 Lott, 92.5mm = 3.641" 458 Winchester, 86.5mm = 3.40"

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

I like both cartridges. But from the 2ea 458 Winchesters and 2ea 458 Lotts that I have, they can be fairly substantial differences in the throats of both. Not a big obstacle for a hand loader. Though I can see .2 or more plus or minus side, producing the proverbial "fast barrels" or "slow...

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

I will try to reply to everything. If I miss something let me know. All of these rifles were bought used. Though, all appeared as dang near new, literally. So, I am assuming the throats were as factory reamed. The MRC magazine is a nominal 3.6", perhaps a tiny longer. I actually load it to...

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

These are the COL's for my 458 Winchesters with the 450 grain TSX. These 458 Winchesters also have varying lengths. The Interarms 458 Winchester at 3.838" is slightly longer than my MRC Lott at 3.820". My rifles and bullets may vary from yours. The 458 Lott picture is attached for comparison.

    458 Win Mag vs 458 Lott....The facts

My two 458 Lotts with the 450 grain TSX. Obviously not all Lott chamber throats are equal. In both of these rifles, with this bullet, the magazines dictate the COL before rifling contact. Always interesting from the hand loader perspective.
