Hey it’s good this thread came back around. At this point OPs kids may be looking for work in the safari industry.

Welcome, condolences on the recent law school graduation. Did you not speak with any attorneys before you did that? I’m a burned out litigator, so just ignore my grumpiness.

Bringing 2 guns on a dangerous game hunt?

I like to take a scoped .375 as a second rifle. It’s great for plains game and can serve as a backup rifle in the event you have some problem with your .404. Besides, I like having something suitable for DG defense in my hands at all times in DG country.

SOUTH AFRICA: Kuche Safaris - Free State - August 2024

I do love a good Kuche thread. I feel like maybe we should have a Kuche Safari sub forum. Wonder how all that rebuilt taxidermy is going to turn out?? Hadn’t looked them up on YouTube in a while. Here is the latest influencer trying to influence me to go on a hunt of a lifetime with...

A First Timers Guide to Buffalo

Thanks for making the video. I enjoyed watching. I wonder what I would have said had I had the forethought to make something like this after my first buffalo hunt. There are some things in the video that I don’t necessarily agree with. Also, I think some of the things may be an accurate...

    Broadheads

I’m not a world class archer, but I’ve killed a lot of animals with a bow. I’ve helped recover(and in some cases not recover) many many animals with friends and clients. 1. Just say no to mechanicals. 2. Light and fast is not the winning solution 3: some level of front of center balance...

I lied it’s only about 40 min away. I always think Americus is further south than it is. You have to check it out.

Looking for gun shop in Georgia, USA

It’s a bit of a drive from Americus, but Barrow Automotive in Bulter, Ga is worth a visit. It’s a Napa auto parts store, but also one of the biggest gun stores in the state. Their prices are great.

    Update from DSC annual meeting

That’s all well and good, but I am still deeply concerned about the information provided in the now deleted thread. The president either said that they wanted to abandon “conservation through hunting” or he didn’t. The president either said DSC would be returned to a “hunting club” or he...

    DSC thread Deleted

I’m worried about Greg. He seems to have gone missing. I was going to put his actual picture on the milk carton, but I don’t want to get any nasty letters from attorneys.

I would also like a specific response from DSC and @Greg Simons as to whether Greg or DSC took any action, including but not limited to making legal threats against AH or any AH members, to have the previously deleted thread removed.

    DSC thread Deleted

If DSC and @Greg Simons have any integrity, then I would think they would answer the questions I asked in the now deleted thread. Very specifically, I think all DSC members deserve an answer as to whether the incoming president said that DSC is not a conservation first organization, and that...

    Suppressors in Africa

I picked one up in RSA and left it with my outfitter. My buddy bought it for me and had it ready when I got there. It wasn’t very expensive. It was a nice Swedish brand. I wish I could buy one like it in the states. It’s easier to do this than jump through all the hoops.

O'Conner vs Keith (Small & Fast vs Big & Slow) - Which is Best?

Both work. The which caliber conversations tend to dominate outdoor writing and forums, but outside of extremes, caliber selection is one of the least important aspects of hunting. I have made some observations about the fast vs slow issue having witnessed hundreds of big game animals taken...

Just got engaged (again) now a question

I need to figure something out. I’ve got a ring made from a shotgun barrel, but I can’t stand to wear it. I tried one silicone ring but could get used to it either. I’ve thought about a tattoo, but I’m really not a tattoo guy. The problem is that my wife assumes that as soon as I leave...

A thorough conversation with Swarovski - Conclusion: Rookhawk knows nothing and is wrong about everything

Well I’m glad other people have started to realize you don’t know anything!! It is bizarre that so much of the market is dedicated to turrets and crazy reticles. These are useless for 98% of all hunting applications. How hard would it be for Leupold to make non-cds models??? In a somewhat...

    Bergara owners?

I’m a big fan of their premier series. I don’t think anything else touches them in that price point. If you can find one, I really like the now discontinued Highlander. It has a fiberglass stock. The newer models have gone to carbon fiber which is lighter but more expensive.

Anyone actually weigh their firearms to compare to advertised weights?

So frequently double manufacturers use the same barrel blanks for multiple calibers. If you have the same size barrel blank and frame, then cutting a larger diameter hole through it removes more material and results in a lighter rifle. For example, if using the same barrel profile, .500...

The Distance to Sight in For Cape Buffalo?

I think you are over thinking this. I would personally sight in for 100 which should have you pretty close at 50. An inch high at 100 wouldn’t hurt anything. You aren’t going to be trying to brain shoot a charging buff at 30 yards. A charge scenario is going to be more like 30 feet or less...

Hierarchy Of Double Rifles - Where does the Verney-Carron Fit In?

Krieghoff is much larger than Heym in the US… just not for double rifles. They sell a ton of completion shotguns. They probably sell 1000 shotguns for every rifle they sell. They focus their marketing energy on their shotgun line. In contest the US importer for Heym devotes all his energy to...

So you think you need to own a Stopping Rifle...

I think elephant hunting is the only real justification for a “stopping” rifle. With buffalo and cats you need to disrupt the CNS to stop a charge. Shot placement is very unforgiving. With elephant energy from a near miss can be transferred to the brain through that big ole skull to stun...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

I have chosen this route? What exactly does that mean? Is that some kind of threat? I don’t doubt that you left somewhere because you were uncomfortable. I’m simply saying I find it hard to believe that your concerns were reasonable. Being in a city, any city, requires a bit of common sense...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

Let me make sure I understand. You hold yourself out as capable of hosting foreigners in Africa, but couldn’t manage eating in a restaurant where there weren’t other white people? Next time you find yourself in a restaurant without other white people, you are probably in for some really good...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

Yeah. I mean honestly I find that hard to believe. In the hundreds of Uber rides over the years, nobody ever thought to tell me it wasn’t safe for white people. There is a basic absurdity about the whole thing. You also don’t really seem to know when to quit. You made some really dumb...

Also, want to clarify I was talking about these random unknown people who says it’s not safe for white people in Atlanta. I was not referring to Mr. Glass who is an absolute gentleman and who has earned my utmost respect from our limited interactions.

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

I agree with you that going to Atlanta for work is no fun. I still takes cases up there on the regular. But since I’ve moved away, the occasional weekend in the city with the wife at a nice hotel, eating a good restaurants, and catching a concert is a good time. But then those weekends...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

It’s really bizarre that people would say that. There are a certain element of people who feel uncomfortable anytime there are black people around. I lived in Atlanta much of my adult life. I was downtown daily for many years. Atlanta has bad parts like any other major city, but honestly...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

I certainly understand the criticism regarding moving out of Texas. I doubt there is any greater concentration of traveling sportsmen anywhere in the world. It is also DSCs base. I’m not trying to convince anyone that leaving Texas was the best decision. It’s also very troublesome that they...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

That’s a remarkably ignorant post. Georgia is a huge potential market for outfitters. Hell, my wife and sister threw me a surprise birthday party a few weeks ago. One of my RSA outfitter friends was in attendance. A number of my friends came down from Atlanta. Many had planned to attend...

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

The weather was such a large factor that there is really no way to assess it. It was really once in a decade or more kind of snow event. The news was non-stop telling people to stay at home. Nearly all the restaurants and business in town were closed. I personally know over 30 people who had...

Welcome Scott!! Are you in Covington? That’s my old stomping grounds. I’m down in middle Ga now. Give me a shout if you are ever coming through Dublin and I’ll show you the trophy room. Go ahead and get that .375. It’s perfectly fine for deer too!!

    Dallas Safari Club Convention Summary

The decision to move out of Texas was questionable. In terms of not Texas places I think Atlanta has received a lot of unwarranted criticism. A price increase for vendors??? That is completely tone deaf.

    Rotten Luck

I very much disagreed with what he said about ARs. He took his licks. I don’t need to hate him forever. It’s rare to find much in the way of outdoor writing that entertains me. I’d much rather read a story like this than endless dribble about this cartridge or that cartridge. I also think...

    Optics for 416 rigby

This would be my pick assuming the dimensions work right for mounting with your action. Swaro Z5-I+ 2-10x42 No detachable mount for me. I’d go with Talley. I think the need for a true 1x is over rated. I think the likelihood of a detachable scope mount causing a problem is greater than...
