    Verney Carron Double Rifles

Just recently sold mine. It was chambered in 400/450 NE 3”. It was a beautifully made rifle with a burled walnut stock. Fit and finish could not have been nicer as well. It was perfectly balanced and swung onto target easily. Never hunted with it but blew up a few red stumps.

Prvi 9.3x62mm Ammo Showing Up Online

I found their 8x57 ammo to be well priced as well as accurate. Firing this ammo I see no reason the reload with the accuracy the factory loads have.

A Word Of Warning To All Aspiring Elephant Hunters

While we are on the subject of solids, has anyone tried the Barnes Buster? I bought and loaded some for my 45-90 to use for plinking and target use. I’ve read mixed reports on them, some saying they do produce a bit of a mushroom, and others saying they are just a plain old solid. Anyone one...

    9.3x62 load

I punched the data for this load into the ballistic calculator and it shows the bullet will maintain a velocity over 1800 fps out to just beyond 225 yds. This might be a good load for elk in the timber as ranges will be well below 225 yds. I am still going to search for a loads with longer legs...

    9.3x62 load

As I stated in a previous post, I was seeing potential for accuracy in a ladder shoot for the hot end of the loads, so I loaded up 3 rounds each of the two hottest loads. After some preliminary shooting to get it sighted in, I first fired the second hottest load. The result was a 3 shot group at...

    My .243 story so far...

I’m also a fan of the .243. I just haven’t found a rifle in this calibre that I liked enough to keep. Always have my eye open for one as it’s a great round for the little Blacktail deer we have around here.

    9.3x62 load

Thanks for the informative replies. Much appreciated. I had to keep the coal short as anything longer will not fit in the magazine, which is too bad as there’s a long throat in this rifle. The low velocity does concern me a bit around the expansion issue. I used N150 in those loads. I have some...

    9.3x62 load

I also have a Husqvarna in 9.3x62. Just started load development. Was doing a ladder test and the three mildest loads had almost no velocity difference. They should be in the most accurate zone. Their velocity was 2218 give or take a fps. I will load some 3 shot test loads in this range and see...

One rifle for North American big game?

Even though I don’t currently own a rifle in this calibre, I would have to go with a nice bolt action in 30-06. It’s ballistics and wide range of bullet weights make it very versatile for North American game.

Current Production Winchester Mod 70 Safari Express

I had a Safari Express in .375 H&H. Excellent fit, finish and accuracy. I would highly recommend one. The only downside was its weight, about 11 pounds loaded with a sling. I sold it and went to a Mauser actioned rifle in 9.3x62. Not quite as powerful as the .375 but more than adequate for the...

Shooting 458 Win Mag ammo out of the 458 Lott

This is sort of like firing 45-70 ammo in a rifle chambered in 45-90. They say there is no harm in doing so, but when I put a few 45-70 rounds through my 45-90, a check with my borescope showed the sharp edge of the 45-90 chamber lip was shaving lead off the bullets and depositing it at the...

    Italian doubles?

I had a SIACE double a few years ago in 45-70. Absolutely beautiful rifle with fine engraving and beautiful wood. Almost too pretty to take out in the field. The only problem was its weight, way too light.

    CRF vs Push feed

I own both. Presently have more crf than pf, but not because of the action. I had a Browning x bolt that I used to see if it would have any trouble feeding a round when the rifle was on its side as well as up side down. No problems what so ever. Fed just as smoothly any way you held the rifle...

    Double addicted

I would give it a light cleaning. It would be nice to see the Color and grain of the wood under an oil finish. I would leave the battle scars alone, it tells the story of the rifle.

    Weatherby Vanguard Safari 375 H&H... it's a ghost

Bought one a few years ago. Well made rifle and good accuracy. I think I paid $850 cdn. It was very muzzle heavy so I removed the recoil pad and inserted 15.5 ounces of lead in the hollow chambers of the butt stock. Glued it in with silicone. It not only balanced the rifle perfectly, the added...

270 WSM or 7 Remington Magnum

I would also go with the 7mm mag, but as stated above, you should check out the 7mm-08. Less recoil than the magnum, accurate and more that suitable for the animals you are going after.

    Best 17HMR

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 17 hmr. A little barrel heavy but not so much as to be a problem. Shots one hole groups at 50 yards all day. Upgraded the trigger to a Timney. A previous owner had put a spring kit in the trigger and breathing on it would set it off. No good for hunting so I swapped it...

    Ruger no1

I had one in .458 win mag. Nice looking rifle but any load approaching full power was brutal to shoot. Way to light for that caliber. Wasn’t accurate which I attribute to the .600” throat on it. It was designed for 500 grain bullets. I was loading 300 and 350 grain bullets.

    300 or 375?

An earlier post suggested the .35 Whelen. Maybe a mid bore would be the solution for you dillema. Heavier bullets and bigger bore than a .300. Not as much recoil as a .375. Suitable for most game in North America. One thing to keep in mind if you go with a .375 H&H is that handloads that are...

    Bolt 375 H&H VS Lever 45/70

    9.3x62mm vs. .375 H&H Mag

I’m in the exact same boat. One is being cleaned up for hunting and the other is a sportier with a military M98 action with the stripper clip guide and thumb notch. Thought about building into something custom, but might just put it away while it goes up in value, and then I’ll sell it. Maybe.

    450/400 NE load data?

If you’re loading for a double rifle then I would recommend Wright’s book as well as the Hornady manual. If you’re loading for a Ruger no.1 then I would recommend reduced loads as the recoil will be painful with a full load. I had a no.1 in .458 win mag and full power loads would rattle your...

    7 Rem Mag

in my opinion the 7mm rem mag is a great cartridge for North America. Powerful, flat shooting and easy on the shoulder. The only game I’d hesitate to use it on are the big bears and bison. I’ve got my .375 for those.

What is the worst rifle you have ever owned?

My worst rifle overall was a sporterized Lee Enfield. Not accurate and kicked like heck. My most disappointing rifle was a Browning BL22. Bought it new, beautiful rifle with excellent craftsmanship. Only problem is it could do better than 2.5” at 50 yards. Got tired of missing grouse so I sold it.

    1885 Safari single shot rifle

I sold it and purchase a model 70 safari express also in .375. Better handling and faster second shots. The Ruger no.1 is better balanced but some so have accuracy problems with vertical strings. I had one like that and after trying several fixes I moved it on down the road.

Downsizing to Matched Rifles...is it worth it?

When ever I come across a rifle in a caliber I don’t have, I ask myself where it would fit in with what I already have.
