Scope for a .338 Win Mag

WOW!! I think I started something. Thanks for your opinions Guy's. Hogpatrol if I was you I would take Sambarhunter up on his offer before he changes his mind, thats too good an offer to pass up. Ray B you got it in one as to the odd long shot for me being 300 -400 yards. Whilst I am more...

Scope for a .338 Win Mag

Thanks Guys, The Rifle I am going to put it on is a Mod 70 Win with Iron sights, while I dont intend to use it as a long range rifle the country I hunt in occasionally gives up a 400mt + shot thats why I went with the higher magnification.

Scope for a .338 Win Mag

Hi Guys, Just after your thoughts on a scope for a .338 win mag im thinking of a Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15x42 I will mostly be stalking Sambar Deer on foot but the odd long shot will most likley present itself at some time.

I will be in NE Victoria a fair bit during my time off over the next year so if it lines up with my time off work im all for it where ever it is. We could have a week long get together/Sambar hunt up the Wonnangatta or on one of the High Plains just before the gates get locked. Im open to...

    Look what I found

Brickburn, in Victoria where they are there is no set season, bag limit or sex restriction, as long as you have the correct game license and are hunting in the correct place using legal methods, you can shoot one whenever you see one. Having said that seeing one can be the real challenge, they...

    Look what I found

Thanks Sambarhunter. I have cameras on both the big scrape and the Red wallow, you are quite correct there is a leaning tree over the scrape but it is out of frame. The messmate tree rubs had me fooled as the whole area is surrounded by about half a dozen of them, if you look in the background...

    Look what I found

I was out for a walk one afternoon and stumbled onto this, the red mud wallow that I nearly dismissed as a wombat hole when I first saw it in the binoculars was what led me to the game trail that I followed to find all of this in a secluded gully. Sambarhunter and Bluey please give me all the...

What is the easiest caliber to convert to .300H&H

Thanks Guys you have given me a few different options I had not considered, I might have to be on the look out for one of those so called "improved" rifles and do the right thing by it. Failing that I think I will rebarrel a second hand .375 H&H, this would probably work out as the easiest...

What is the easiest caliber to convert to .300H&H

I am hoping one of you guy's has either done this or can advise me as to what is the easiest caliber to convert to .300H&H. Is it easier to open up the bolt face on a 30-06 and rechamber for instance or is it easier to cut and rechamber a 300win mag? Or do I get a .375H&H and rebarrel? Also...

    Hunting Vaal Rhebok

I agree with Ernie they can be tough to hunt especially around the area you are planning on hunting, I hunted that area last year and got a nice one, be prepared for long shots at crazy angles. Have fun and I hope you get one.

I'm in Corryong, 5 minutes walk from the post office. I will give you a yell when I am there next. I haven't been to the top yet I must do next time im over. He is doing up a couple of heads for me at the moment a Monster Waterbuck and a Hartebeast for my son. Its funny after all these years we have only actually managed to get 1 day in the bush together and that was when I shot my first Sambar. Mind you my choice of rifles hasnt helped me too much...

    It started with this

Here is the view of Mt Mittamatite from the back yard of my place, Cant hunt there but 10 minutes in the opposite direction I have found a nice little gully that has Sambar and Fallow in it. Yes John had a bit of a bad patch a while ago, He's pretty good now but had to give up chasing the hounds.

    It started with this

Nice Pic i will be there in a couple of weeks time. Way back in the late 80's I decided I would take some time off work and go sambar hunting, couldnt be that hard I figured. I got myself a game license and maps and armed with a copy of Walking them up I drove from Sydney to Myrtleford and set...

Looks like you have been busy John, I ended up buying a place in Corryong and have been over a couple of times this winter, and im heading over again soon. Managed to track down a few guys I used to hunt with in the 90's too, by the way John Clark says to say G'day.

SOUTH AFRICA: Now For A Bushbuck To Round Out The "Spiral Horns"

9 wow looks like I have a few more to get then, I was referring to the 4 available in South Africa, so I have to add bongo, sitatunga, mountain nyala, lesser kudu and Livingstones Eland, is that correct? Just goes to show one never stops learning.

SOUTH AFRICA: I Finally Get My Kudu With Huntsoek Safaris

Hi cls I was using a .243 with 100grn Nosler Partitions loaded with AR2209 powder to 3070fps, I have a CMC Howa (now Howa 1500) with a 1 in 8 twist barrel, it is very accurate with that load and shoots very small groups, this is 5 shots at 400 meters, all shots are inside a 4" square. I hope...

AUSTRALIA: My Sambar Hunt Part 2 August 2016

Thanks Caustin, I have seen the Rockies and I agree they are Beautiful!! As far as how I utilized the Sambar, I cut the Back straps into Steaks, I boned out the legs and made Steaks, Roasts and stew cubes. then with all the offcuts I sliced all the sinew and tendon off and made Jerky, then I...

Just got invited to hunt Elk in 2017

Thanks for that, I may end up leaving the 45-70 home and use my buddy's 30-06, still you know how it is you like to use your own gear as often as you can. I dont think I own anything else big enough to do the job as I wouldn't consider a .243 an Elk calibre. Sure I can drop 100grn projectiles...

Just got invited to hunt Elk in 2017

Thanks Caustin thats pretty much what I figured from what I have read so far. I run woodleigh 350 grain projectiles at close to 2000fps and find they drop around 18" at 200yrds. I can keep them all on a piece of A4 paper at that range with a good rest but I much prefer to be under 150yrds. From...

Just got invited to hunt Elk in 2017

Caustin, the only one I have that I would consider using on Elk would be my 45-70. I would love to take an Elk with it but I may be better off borrowing one when I get there. I guess it all depends on what sort of ranges and cover I can expect to encounter, I also saw I can get a combined Bear...

    Stag and mud

I did notice how cheap things were compared to "donga" and all I would want would be a cottage on a small block with a bedroom or two, a kitchen and bathroom. Dont worry I am looking at the real estate web sites every week and have seen some that would suit me perfectly.
