Short answer...Yes. My experience has been most shots on plains game are taken under 250 yards.
I shot two moose with 358 win and 225 TSX. Though only going 2500 fps, the recovered bullets showed perfect expansion.
Your wife should be fine on plains game at reasonable distances.
I have two R8's (Professional stock and GRS Norwegian made birch laminate) and four barrels, .223, 22-250, 30-06 and 375 H&H. I have never had a problem with factory rounds. The 22-250 would occasionally misfire using reloaded ammunition. I would hear a click but no dent on the primer. I am...
I am assuming you will be hunting elk? I have been on many successful elk hunts (and few where things went sour.) Our camp has taken over 100 elk in the past 25 years. Some observations I've made over the years: We limit our shots to under 250 yards and take only broadside shots. Either of the...
Guy, you are one of the quickest shots on game that I have ever seen; I never thought you would be putting that skill to use on a charging bull elephant!
Your writing skills are pretty darn good too.
I'm glad you were able to make your dream hunt a reality and that you and Monique made it...
Welcome to AH forum. Really enjoyed your photography skills. I also did my first trip to Africa with Ray Kemp, ten years ago. So, this brings back many pleasant memories. The Eastern Cape is a rugged and beautiful area with an astounding variety of game. Well worth visiting more than once (a...
I never thought of Namibia as destination to hunt crocodile. Thanks for enlightening me. As always, your photography skills are exemplary. It looks like a very interesting hunt!
Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your success. . Certainly looks like interesting county to hunt.
Side note... During 1960's my father and his freinds shot a lot of moose with the old SLME. We Canadians refer to it as the ".303 British". Excellent caliber.
I have shot a few deer with the Barnes 80 grain TTSX in the .243. Always impressed with the results.
You mentioned that you are hunting East of Saskatoon. That is my home turf. Hope you have a successful duck/goose hunt!
Great report. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Frederik, I think I am spoiled to have such an animal as my first buffalo. I don't think I really appreciated how old he was until, Graham, the camp manager, commented that he was one of the oldest buffalo taken in the past few seasons.
Thanks Doug! I think my brother has outshot me in the writing department. (He often outshoots me when hunting as well. LOL)
There was a Canadian author who famously said, "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story".
We tried to be factual AND entertaining. Glad you enjoyed the report.
I had a left hand Ruger model 77 African and didn't dislike anything about the rifle or the caliber. I just like the history of the classic 375 h&h. So, I sold the Ruger and bought a left hand customized CZ 550 ( American Hunting Rifle) in 375 h&h. It was a beautiful rifle but I got bit by the...
Thanks for the report. I canoed from Wollaston Lake via the The Thlewiaza river to Neulton Lake a few years back. We saw a lot of moose. Had you more time, I'm sure you would have gotten a bull. Caribou numbers have dropped dramatically in the past 10 years. Also, the caribou seem to be...
Some random photo's.....
After our hunt at Hammond, we spent a two days at Mokore's main camp. Here is my cabin. The camp is in a great location overlooking the Mokore river.
Here is Barrie Duckworth (left) with my brother.
Barrie and his wife Bertie founded Mokore Safaris over 30...
I am now relegated to photographer until my brother got his bull. This would happen two days later. Fast forward and it is day five and we now have two buffalo “in the salt” and five more days to hunt. While We really enjoyed buffalo hunting, it felt like we had entered into a more relaxed phase...
Brickburn, you are right. Fortunately, I was relying on Dalton to make that call. It turns out that my second shot hit the bull low in the neck. Missing the vertebra by about 4 inches. The solid likely did some damage but it was my first shot that counted and ultimately killed him.
Thank you!
Back to the buffalo hunt….
We went to the spot where the bull was last seen. There was very little blood. To make matters worse, the adrenalin rush was wearing off and I had developed a bad case of the shakes.
We crossed the creek. There, ahead of us was a thicket of small saplings with an...
My brother (and hunting partner) has already written quite an informative and entertaining report of our time in the Save´ Valley. I suggest you look up Longwalker and read his account first:
ZIMBABWE: Buffalo In The Save´ with Mokore Safaris. August 3rd, 2022.
Here is a brief follow up report...
Thanks for posting this Guy and for the invitation to join you on this hunt! Since we have poor internet service at our Elk Camp, my contribution to the story is going to have to wait until after elk season is over.
Ragman, I had an excellent season......
My personal best Whitetail, a calf moose, and a calf elk. Managed to call in a nice bull moose for a friend and my son got a spike bull elk. The freezer is full!
My sons spike bull.
I could have shot a bull but saw a cow and calf just 300 yards from...
I successfully hunted leopard with Johann in 2019 and I was really impressed with his hunting area. Also, Johann is very passionate, knowledgeable and methodical in his pursuit of leopard. If you want to hunt Leopard in Namibia, you won't go wrong booking a hunt with him.
I'm left handed and left eye dominant. I shoot left hand. Both of my son's are right handed but left eye dominant, they both shoot left hand rifles as well. It is much quicker pointing a shotgun or rifle when you are using your dominant eye. The other option is to close the dominant eye and...
Same subject but different continent.....There were two wolf attacks in Northern Saskatchewan a few years back. One was fatal and one not.
The wolves were hanging around a mine site dump and got habituated to humans. A mine worker decided to walk back to the barracks one evening to get some...
Another suggestion.......time your hunt to coincide to the new moon. Leopards are nocturnal but even they can't see when it is pitch black, new moon means they are more likely to hunt during daylight hours.
rdachille, you have been given three excellent references for a leopard hunt. Just a suggestion...but what worked for me was to make up a list of questions and then make arrangements to interview via WhatsApp, so that you can talk to each one personally. Your question to Regleg is a good one...
I enjoyed hunting with Johann Veldsman. His outfit is called Shona Safaris. Check out my report from 2019. He is passionate and knowledgeable about hunting leopard.
He has a couple of nice toms hitting baits right now...check out his facebook posts.
Alaska Luke, when you are talking about "bone", I assume you mean the heavy leg bone or humerus. I have seen a lot of elk shot with various calibers up to the .375 Ruger and H &H. It takes a large well constructed bullet to break the humerus and still penetrate adequately. I honestly don't know...
I don't have any experience hunting bears, but have shot three moose and five or six elk with the 358 Win. I think that the 225 gr A-frames would be entirely adequate for bear, provided you are not shooting over 200 yards. I have had good success with 225 gr. TSX, seldom recovering a bullet but...
That first trip to Africa is always special. Looks like you spoiled Eliot. How is he going to top this on his next safari?
Congratulations on a job well done.
Your welcome! If my memory serves me right, I recall reading a hunting report of your trip a few years back....
These family trips get more difficult as they get to be young adults and lives of their own. You were wise to take your children when they are young.
@Bob Nelson 35Whelan please see my report under Africa hunting reports- Namibia: A family Vacation with Shona Hunting Safaris. Read through the comments and then if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.
Thank You. Yes, it was good value for the dollar spent. My wife really wants to go back with our whole family. So, you see my dilemma. For the same money, go on a buffalo hunt by myself or take the whole family and hunt plains game. I guess the buffalo hunt will have to wait a few years....
Ragman, Greetings and Thank You. I also hunted the Eastern Cape in 2013, so I share your dilemma!
To answer your question, I think the Kudu population, in the area we visited, is doing fine. We saw kudu nearly every time we went out and we did see some very fine bulls. Rabies is a cynical thing...
