I agree. He was quite a fascinating hunter and explorer. I would like to do a page for him in the “Legends” section of the forums here but not sure if that is OK to do and haven’t had a chance.
I agree that the sight hood was 100% replacement on that one. I always wondered if the sights weren’t replacement as well but likely done by Jeffery during a refurb in prewar times. It came out of a collection from a gentleman that had passed away and was sourced for me by a friend in the UK. I...
Yes, that one has found a new owner as I have found a little nicer one and “upgraded”. Unfortunately you can’t keep them all.
I do have another prewar Jeffery 404 for sale right now but it is not as collectible as the one in this thread.
What a super cool offering. This is rare set of historic educational Safari ephemera that are the sources for some of the most important references we all have used numerous times.
I agree that I do not think they are putting a lot of value of that “provenance” based on the estimate.
They do miss some of these pieces of provenance though. A few years ago I bought Keith’s 577 NE Rigby Webley Farquarson from RIA. It was also previously owned by author John Ross. There was...
As others have said, this is 100% a Paso Robles Rigby. Again, I will reiterate that I had a CA Rigby double in 500 NE and it was a joy to shoot and very well made. I also owned a 275 Rigby and 416 Rigby bolt action made in CA and found them to be of very high quality and beautiful.
Good luck...
Up for sale is a very rare and fine cased Westley Richards Droplock (hand detachable lock) ejector, small bore double rifle. This rifle was made for the Maharaja of Alwar which was one of the main patrons of Westley Richards during the prewar Maharaja big game hunting “hey day”. This rifle was...
Up for sale is a beautiful prewar Mauser Sporing Rifle in the iconic 9.3x62mm caliber made by H Barella of Berlin. This rifle features a 25” barrel with full length Mannlicher style stock of beautifully figured wood featuring carved buffalo horn grip cap and buttplate. There are sling attachment...
I believe it is a standard length. A magnum action would be quite rare in a 375 of that vintage. Really, they are pretty rare on a 375 Holland & Holland rifle of any vintage.
Looks like a classic Holland take apart (barreled receiver comes out of the stock) to me. The matching TD case is a nice touch. The scope may not be super useful as it may not be an actual 1” tube making the scope mounts less valuable. I had one like this and the scope was a little larger than...
This is a great little Rigby rifle for someone that wants an original prewar that they can hunt with and use but not have to worry about. Good luck with the sale.
I agree that the prewar Hollands were a finished a little nicer than than prewar Rigby’s overall. This particular Holland is finished at a bit higher level than most with the horn forend tip and little touches like engraved screw heads. These features were not common. I believe that most (if not...
Thank you for all the comments. This one is a truly special rifle. Hard to let it go but it is time for it to go to a new caretaker. Please send me a PM with any questions if I can help.
Good question. This uses Holland's most prominent style of takedown system. Some call it a take-apart.
1. It has a large captive screw in front of the magazine in the bottom metal that can be loosened with something like a coin or screw driver.
2. Then the barreled action tilts out of the stock...
Up for sale is a very rare and early “Best Quality” .375 Holland & Holland barreled action takedown Mauser rifle. This rifle is very rare in that it is a Pre-WWI (circa 1913-1914) Holland & Holland rifle built on a Magnum Square Bridge Action. The .375 H&H Magnum was invented in 1912 making this...
What a super cool offer for ammo collectors. Or, aspiring ammo collectors. Would be very tough (and expensive) to put a grouping like this together. What a way to jump start a collection.
Great deal for both seller and buyer on an excellent rifle. I have this same rifle that I customized some. I have taken it to Alaska twice and have the utmost confidence in it. Excellent rifle in the perfect for Alaska big game.
I would also guess that the stock may have been refinished but the shotgun is in very nice condition overall and I don’t think it has been shot much. Also, the chambers appear to be 2-3/4” factory and have not been lengthened. A 2-3/4” shell falls right into place without issue. From my...
These Jeffery rifles are beautiful. I am glad to see them being built true to the lines of the original prewar rifles including engraving patterns. The engraving on the 500 above looks very similar to my original one which I love. Kudos!
I am very sorry that I missed them at the G&H booth at...
Reviving an old thread here but I was wondering if anyone has the original article listed archived somewhere or in PDF? I enjoyed reading it a few years ago and wanted to read again but the link is broken now. Thank you.
