    Help with German Proofs/Engraver

The FWW is Frankonia Waffen Wurtzburg, a German gunmaker who is still in business. I believe it was Rookhawk who helped me identify the maker of my .458WM which has the same FWW marking in that vertical configuration.

What are your not-negotiables for a rifle?

Well, now got me thinking…again. My Mark X .416 doesn’t either. I installed a PTG 3 pos on my M98 .458WM so guess the CC gonna breathe again.

    New Buffalo call your shot

Between red and green with my .416 Ruger 400g Barnes TSX @ 2400fps. Agree that the old boys won’t hang around for closer shots.

What are your not-negotiables for a rifle?

Must have iron sights, period. I grew up in these piney woods hunting nothing but open sights and did not own a scope until my early 20’s, and that rifle was only scoped for a traveling hunt where ranges could actually reach 100 yds.

Ruger 270 hard to chamber ammo

The .416 Taylor round on the right has a set back shoulder from forcing the bolt closed on a rifle that had a barrel installed without finish reaming to SAAMI spec.

Ruger 270 hard to chamber ammo

What does the brass look like after you chamber a fresh round, then eject it? Compare that ejected round to another fresh & unchambered round closely: look to see if the shoulder has been set back on the chambered round. If you have a 20ga bore brush soak it in Hoppe’s and scrub that chamber...

    Just picked this one up

Very nice Smith. My first duty revolver was a S&W model 15 back in 1973, which was essentially a model 10 with adjustable sights.

    Laser Checkering Opinions?

Well, I discovered this laminate stock style (Classic) from Boyd’s has a fore end shape that does not lend itself to laser engraving. So, accepting that a glass and pillar bedding job would be a much more familiar job to me than attempting hand checkering and knowing the cost of hiring a pro to...

    Laser Checkering Opinions?

I have located a couple laser checkering outfits online but all use exactly what you described…smaller machines that have a max table of 31” and cater to shotguns.
  13. Papa72

    Laser Checkering Opinions?

Thanks! Their website says not accepting new jobs due to their machines being down 3-4 months but I’ll save their info if no luck before then.

    Laser Checkering Opinions?

Yeah, nothing really showstopping for me but nice and functional.

    Laser Checkering Opinions?

My .416 Ruger has a Boyd’s laminated stock (nutmeg pattern) that was nicely glass and pillar bedded by the builder before I acquired it. Everything about this stock suits me, except it was purchased without Boyd’s checkering option and is slicker than a baby’s butt. So, I contacted Boyd’s and...

    Good Gun Deals This Week

    Leopold VX-6HD 1-6x24 FireDot FS

Price is definitely less than my investment, but it is not factory new so I figure asking a price close to a dealer’s best sale figure wouldn’t get it sold.

    375 Ruger

+1 on the African’s factory stock being too thin. I am a tall guy with long fingers and need more wood in the wrist area and I suspect most folks would agree. I purchased mine online without having handled an African so here we are.

That’s what I expect to encounter here. The “form” might be a copy of the gunsmith’s FFL?

    Magnaport, anyone?

That is the exact NECG Masterpiece banded sight I installed on my rifle so at least porting is possible. I’ll call them.
  21. Papa72

    Magnaport, anyone?

I would not port a rifle of that quality either. I don’t think I would pass on any rifle that I could afford that was ported, but that affliction ain’t struck me recent. This .416 Ruger is a project rifle and a perfect before/after test bed but weather has me stalled from the range presently.
  22. Papa72

    Magnaport, anyone?

According to their website, I am limited to 2 slots due to the banded front sight on this rifle.
  23. Papa72

    Magnaport, anyone?

Great input from all…thanks. Seems those that have owned or used a Mag-na-Ported rifle are favorable overall. If it even slightly improves my shooting experience with this .416 it’s worth the $120.

    Leopold VX-6HD 1-6x24 FireDot FS

I am offering this VX-6HD for sale as it is excess to my needs. It has been mounted but never on a rifle that was fired. In fact, it has never left the house. There are no ring marks or imperfections and is offered in as-new condition. Comes with 2 custom CDS dials: Hornady 300 DGX and...

    Magnaport, anyone?

Awesome review BJH65 and thank you. This rifle is a neighborhood gunsmith project and although well executed has no intrinsic collector’s value to ruin. My remaining question involves the process itself: does the electro process damage the surrounding bluing? This rifle has a banded front...

    Magnaport, anyone?

I was focused more on the benefit of reduced muzzle rise but any reduction in recoil without the excesses of a true brake would definitely be a plus.

    Magnaport, anyone?

Now that I’ve decided to thin my rifle herd to the one DG rifle that will go to Africa with me, I would like opinions on the final mod that I am considering: Magnaport. This .416 Ruger on a Mark X action is 10.3# unloaded and I do manage the recoil, but have read the ‘porting does help muzzle...

+1. Not that laminated wood is perfect, but does seem to be a slight advantage over walnut in that environment in lieu of composite.

    Wood stock rifles

Up until recently I never gave much thought to laminate wood, but the .416 Taylor project rifle I acquired came with a Boyd’s “nutmeg” laminate that has changed my opinion somewhat. It’s growing on me.

    .416 Ruger Guide Gun FS

Due to some questionable ignorance on my part I have ended up with 2-.416 Ruger rifles. The rifle has Alaska Arms extended floor plate, AA’s 1 inch QD rings, and a...

    Mailing Barreled Actions

I’m a little confused. Just got off the phone with Shaw Barrels, and they told me an FFL is not required to USPS a barreled action to them. In fact, he stated Shaw does not furnish their FFL info to anyone. Just curious if anyone has sent receivers via USPS without furnishing FFL info at the PO?

Frustrated! Angry! The Curse of Africa!

Similar to my wife’s challenge in 1993. Open and non-healing wound on the bottom of her foot from DIC complications that also resisted graft attempts. She got frustrated and asked her MD to amputate below knee. A couple months of healing and prosthetic fitment later and she returned her work...

    375 Ruger Guide Gun Issues

I also have both Warne (30mm) and AA (1”) rings and both are excellent IMO. Personally, I prefer the AA rings’ horizontal split to the Warner’s vertical clamp style arrangement but that’s aesthetics mostly. AA’s larger levers seem to release easier for me also.
