    .375 vs .404 jeffry

My .375 H&H weighs 7 lbs. It has a free recoil energy of 64 ft-lbs. It beats the snot out of me. I think your values might be a bit low....a .30-06 is normally around 18-20 pounds. My.375 Weatherby is way up there but I use a special stock so it mitigates it. I have the same stock for my...

    Handgun for wolf protection

After some creep attempted rapist chased my daughter (literally) at college, I bought her a S&W .38 special snubby. I "think" it was a 637. It's super small, super compact, holds only 5, and has a 1.875" barrel. For wolves, I'd probably carry my Glock 10mm longslide (I believe it's a G40 but...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

Bullthrower, I built a .375 Weatherby on an Enfield action and really like it. I hand load all my cartridges and with that, it's not more expensive than any other cartridge. The brass isn't that expensive. Truthfully, all hand loading components have gone up a lot since the pandemic. I have...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

It's noticeably harder. When I shoot H&H's out of my Weatherby, it's more like a .270 :) But, I use an A-Square Hannibal stock so even with the Weatherby it's not bad. Just a big shove...not a violent hit.

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

    I get 2889 ft/s with my .375 Weatherby with a 300gr. I think it's superior to either of these :)

I actually have that movie on DVD. Corny and bad as all get out...but the title is cool :)

The Ghost and The Darkness - two questions

I'm an engineer and I build bridges. In the movie, it was a truss bridge. These are I-Beam bridges. Simple Spans. I wonder if the movie was wrong, or the bridges were redone later on?

The Ghost and The Darkness - two questions

I've been there and looked at them. They had no manes. Tsavo is very thorny, and the wild lions running through the thorns had their manes torn off. In the movie, they had big manes. One of my favorite movies though :)

Show your work horses and bubba rifles

The only gun I ever traded away....and I REGRET it severely...to my old man! I had a Ruger .44mag carbine and traded it to Dad for a 1958 Remington 742 Woodsmaster Auto .30-06 with a steel butt plate. Wish I'd kept the Ruger :(

    Chambering and moving the rifle

He does make a good point. With the really long actions, you "could" maybe hit yourself in the nose with the back of the bolt if cycling from the shouldered position (which is how I try to do it). It is more important to cleanly eject the empty case and chamber a fresh round (while taking an...

    Ideal Couger bullet?

Basically, whatever you'd use on plain old white tail deer would be fine. A .270 Win with a 130g, .30-06 with a 150gr (180 might not open up...they're really thin skinned), etc.

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I ran a 110lb jack hammer for two days, powered by a 100hp Ingersol Rand diesel generator that sounded like a Huey hovering in the yard....hammering out a reinforced slab that I'd made to last 200 years....which lived up to its design. Made "The Boss" a new Patio and wanted it all red, so the...

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

In memoriam - Zimbabwe Professional Hunter killed by enraged buffalo

They actually poison water holes? I guess I am too much of a "nice guy" and naive... I'd have never thought of that. Evil is out there, and these guys are it. I can see some guy killing an animal out of season to feed his family. And I wouldn't blame him for it. But poisoning them? That's...

    Scope for.375 h&h

I have that on my .375 Weatherby. Have hundreds of rounds through it with no problems of any kind. It's a good rig. Mine is the HD version with the brighter lenses. I recommend those over the standard. They are noticeably brighter. But they're all good.

In memoriam - Zimbabwe Professional Hunter killed by enraged buffalo

Very tragic. I feel very sorry for him and his family. No good words... I assume the poacher will probably never be caught. Hopefully the guy has a conscious, saw this on the news, and will regret it the rest of his days... even if he should go to jail...

Dan Wesson 744VH 44 Magnum Revolver With 3 Barrels

Those are nice pieces. I have the blued version with the 8" (might be 8 3/8", I'm not sure) barrel. Bought it off a buddy of mine, like new, hardly fired, for $800. Only had the one barrel. He had an old car wheel set up at 170 yards away, and I actually hit it with it. Had never fired a...

    PROPER Marksmanship Training

I live out in the woods and have an 80 yard range set up. I could "maybe" clear some trees and squeeze out 100, but the 80 is what I've got and what I've shot my rifles in at. Seems to work OK. Not sure how far a guide would let me shoot at a Cape Buff. I figure most of the shots are probably...

458 Lott instead of 416 Rigby?

Thank you, Axle. Here is my first A-Square clone. I think it actually turned out nicer than the ones they made. The 'smith I work with really did a fantastic job on it. I machined what I could, but then handed it off to a pro. This current one I bought from Russ at Whitworth arms I believe...

458 Lott instead of 416 Rigby?

MPI Stocks finally shipped my A-Square Hannibal stock clone. It has two mercury recoil reducers in it...one 16oz and one 11oz in the butt. Action for my .458 Lott is a Winchester made Model 1917 Enfield that's been worked over. Barrel is a 26" McGowen. This will be my second A-Square clone...

    What about a .375 Wby?

I did this test myself. Took a Model 70, and a Weatherby Mark V. Functioned them both upside down, sideways, all around at weird angles. Both worked fine. The only way I could get the push feed to fail was to "short stroke" it, where you only push the cartridge in about 1/3 the way and then...

    MPI Stocks

Update folks, I emailed Lisa last week and again this week, and actually spoke to her on the phone today. The poor woman injured her back and was out of commission for a while. Assuming you don't reload, what's the best caliber to go with on a double rifle today?

I know Lance. Also his dad Jerry and (I think Grandpa) Glenn. My dad started buying from them in 1963 at their original Hancock store. I'm sure Glenn is long gone. Jerry might be gone too. They moved to Hagerstown, MD, for a while, but now have a shop back in Hancock, MD, right across the...

What is the ultimate stopping rifle..?

I saw Strega do 508mph in 2012. It was the fastest for a while. But Steven Hinton (Steve's boy) who flew Strega that year set the new record in Voodoo a couple years ago. Like 532mph or something. Both are modified P-51's. In fact, Steven beat Tiger Destefanie (who owns Strega) with Voodoo...

I have a Bonanza. You guys make me feel like a wimp :) I'd love to fly the Big Iron! If I hit the lottery (I hear your chances of winning are slightly better if you actually buy a ticket...) I'd want a Mustang and a Corsair. Then maybe look at a C-130 to travel in.... But a B-17 would be...

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

It pained me to do it, but I cut off the swept back bolt handle on my M1917 Enfield and we welded on a straight smooth handle by Talley. I was afraid of getting my finger broken under recoil. Perhaps I made more of it than I should, but the new handle looks really nice. My gun smith, John...

For those that can't afford the Rigby Big Game or Heym Express, What's the next best thing?

I went with the Model 1917 Enfield on both of my custom builds (one done, one in the shop). I looked at the Granite Mountain Arms actions, and they are really nice. But the Enfields were quite a bit cheaper and do make a nice action once all the machine work is done.

Does anyone know what is going on with MPI stocks? They made me an A-Square Hannibal stock for my .375 Roy that I am very happy with. I then commissioned them last March to make me another for my .458 Lott. The owner, Lisa (her father, "Doc," who made my original stock has passed...the...

My Take on Dangerous Game Scopes

Thoughts on the Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 Scope?

I have two of these without the light up reticle. I just wanted the plain Duplex. I made a deal on two maple stocked Model 70's and wanted to scope both of them. I really like the 2x10-42, but Optics Planet had a super sale on the 3x15-44 (all in VX-5HD with non electric duplex reticles). I...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

The .375 Weatherby was introduced in 1943...only 31 years after the H&H, and is 80 years old now in its own right. Not exactly a newbie. I have a .375 H&H that I like. But I also like my Weatherby chambered Enfield. And I can shoot H&H's out of it to boot. I've put about 60 of them...

    375 Ruger vs 375 H&H

I built a .375 Weatherby on a Model 1917 Enfield action with a Douglas barrel that I chronographed a 300gr at 2889 ft/s. I also chrono'd one at 2885 ft/s. So they're close. That's about 5600 ft-lbs of energy. More than a .458 Win Mag. I think it eclipses the Holland and Holland and the...

John Myer in VA did most of the work on my Enfield. He is excellent. What you will find is, the guys that are good, are backed up for years. As in, they have a huge wait list. John isn't taking on any more custom guns...I think. He's doing my Lott because we're kind of buddies and I...

Most efficient 3 cartridge spread for dangerous game?

I'm thinking .375 Weatherby for everything. Mine has a long barrel and does 2889 ft/s with a 300...5580 ft-lbs. But, I am building a .458 Lott...... .30-06 with a 180 would be good for the smaller stuff....
