    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

Hi mate, The parent case is the .300 Win Mag (y) Personally, I find the recoil in the 425 Express very snappy and fast - more unpleasant than the .458 Win Mag. In fact, when googling the 425 Express that was the chief complaint - recoil. Even compared to the 404 Jeffery which gives the same...

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

Bob is being a little generous in praise in regards to the 425's recoil! I certainly wouldn't regard it as low recoil! l regard any sub 9lb rifle firing a 400gn projectile at 2300fps as a handful... Hey, we all feel recoil differently l guess - and maybe l'm a little biased, as my last...

No mate, I had decided if l ever got another rifle it would be a .243 a while ago (y) Russ

    Elk at 688 yards with a 243

The .243 is boring - just like the .270, .308, .30-06 but I do like it, just as l like the other calibers l mentioned. I already have my 425 Express which l have to make ammo up from scratch, and a .308 Norma which brass is extremely expensive to buy (I know l can form brass from something else...

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Hi Velo Dog. I've owned a couple of sporterised 6.5x55's - they were popular in Australia in the 90's. A company in Oz bought a heap of them and Lee Enfield's and fitted them with bridge mounts, synthetic stocks and I believe Tasco scopes and sold them through the shooting mags. @CBH...

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Yep, Fallow - but there's Sambar around too (y) And Fallow aren't that big or heavy boned at all... AND Here's what happens when you hit one with a 480gn Woodleigh at 2150fps out of a .458 Win Mag... We didn't eat up to the hole... Russ

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Hahahah! No! Not at all... :ROFLMAO: I know Bob hates the .243 but l wasn't riling him up... I just really like it - and think it (or something similar) is the only caliber I'm missing... And every time I feel de-masculinized about liking the .243 I'll grab a .458 or my 425 Express from the...

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Haha! I'll actually be hunting with Bob this Saturday so let's see if he brings it up! You know, we all have cartridges we love and hate - and love to hate. Obviously the .243 is one that Bob hates - but l really like it. I think it does what it's meant to do perfectly. Imagine if we all had...

One caliber away from contentment... who else?

Hey mate, It's funny, the .25-06 is one cartridge that has never grabbed me. Never saw what the fuss was about or what it did better than a .270... In fact the only .25 cal that interests me in any way is the .257Wby, which I've owned. But regardless of what .25 it is, they are not legal for...

Hey everyone... I have decided that I am only one caliber away from complete contentment... does anyone else feel the same? I thought I had the complete armoury but looking again l think l'm missing something... Looking in my safe I have everything from rabbits to long-range deer...

    .264 WinMag load questions

Hi. This is from the Australian ADI loading manual. H4831SC is known as AR2213SC in Australia. Hopefully, this might at least give you a place to start. (y) Russ

    My 308 Norma story

Bob, When we go on our hunt soon mate l'll bring a big banger... l reckon the 425 Express will get the nod (y) Russ
  25. Badboymelvin

    My 308 Norma story

Yes, it's available in Australia - but it's expensive! Around $155 for 20
  26. Badboymelvin

    My 308 Norma story

Well, l can't speak for other people but the reason I use rifles like the .338WM, 425 Express and .458 Win Mag is because the recoil doesn't bother me and l know for a FACT that the bigger rifles put them down more effectively... especially the .458. I have killed more Sambar with the .458 than...

    My 308 Norma story

It's great to see all the replies on here... it seems the 308 Norma still gets some love! Last week l got a packet of 175gn Atomic 29 projectiles to try in the 308 Norma. The Atomic 29 is an all-copper monometal hollowpoint designed and made in Australia. I really like these projectiles and...

    My 308 Norma story

Hey guys, First, a bit of a backstory! Lately, I've been having some friends and family members come hunting with me - which is great, but unfortunately the smallest centrefire that I owned was a Winchester M70 Synthetic Matte in .338 Win Mag. Now this was a very fine rifle and served me well...

    Ideal Jungle Rifle

And to stop bullets bouncing off animals! Sorry… my bad
  30. Badboymelvin

    Ideal Jungle Rifle

I would buy a Zastava or a Winchester M70 in .458 Win Mag and put it in a Hogue stock (with the full aluminium bedding block) and cut the barrel down to 22" I would then load either 480gn Woodleigh's or 450gn Hydro's at 2100 - 2250fps and feel confident hunting anything.

    My favourite all-arround rifle

    375 H&H Pistol

Hahahaha! Hey, I'm all for go big or go home - but l think that's too big for me! And maybe even to big for the mighty Sambar... Russ

What's the next cartridge your looking to add to your collection and what role will it fill?

Hey guys, I have just purchased a sporterised M17 in 308 Norma Magnum. This will be a nice match to my newly acquired 425 Express... My plan is to load up a nice sleek 180gn projectile at 2950-3000fps and this is the rifle I'll bring if I feel a longer shot might crop up. According to my...

why do people not use premium bullets?

Hey guys, Living down in Australia I used Woodleigh's in all my calibers - from the .300Wby to the .458WM. I consider Woodleigh projectiles a 'premium' bullet and they have never let me down. Just recently I've started using the Australian made Atomic 29 projectiles in my 425 Express and will...

Looking For 243 For Kid's Hunting Rifle

I like the .243 too. Was out on a Fallow hunting trip last year (same place we went) and saw my mate drop 2 Fallow with one shot using one. And that was with plain-Jane factory gain 100gn soft-points - not Barnes or anything fancy. Both dropped on the spot - just as quick as the Fallow l shot...

ZIMBABWE: D-Day In The Omay (And D Doesn't Stand For Delta)

.458 Win Mag vs .470 NE

I'm using BM2 (BENCHMARK) powder and yes they're compressed - but using a drop tube helps minimise this. I have no qualms with compressed loads and l have fired compressed .458 loads from the early 80's with no problem. In fact they were some of the most consistent ammo l've ever fired (y) Russ

.458 Win Mag vs .470 NE

I'd buy the .458 and have every confidence in it. (y) My Zastava with the 24" barrel is launching the 550gn Woodleigh at just under 2100fps and the Woodleigh 450gn Hydro's at spot on 2300fps... I would would feel confident taking on anything Africa has to offer with these 2 loads... Russ

    425 Express finally arrived!

Today gave me a chance to do some playing with the 425 Express... A friend of mine very kindly gave me some projectiles to try in it - thank you Justin. These projectiles were some Bertram 400gn soft-points and some Atomic 29 360gn all copper hollow-points. Both of these projectiles are...

.375 or .416 for Cape buffalo?

Sorry to de-rail the thread but what speed is your 404? The 'old' 2150fps or the 'new' 2400fps with a 400gn? I'm loading my 425 Express (300WM necked up to .423") to an easy 2300fps... Cheers, Russ

    425 Express finally arrived!

That seems to be the case... he just doesn't seem to feel recoil! But having said that, l told him once that no-one feels recoil in the field and he said - and I quote "you just haven't fired a big enough rifle..." :oops:

    425 Express finally arrived!

Yep, they are awesome recoil pads and Anthony swears by them. I am definitely grateful that my 425 Express has one fitted (y) Russ

    425 Express finally arrived!

Hi Bob (y) Thanks for the kind words mate. That recoil pad is AWESOME but boy, that 425 kicks! I wasn't going to mention it but l will now, that 425 Express load in this rifle is the most unpleasant recoil l have ever personally experienced. It has knocked my 550gn@2100fps .458WM load off...

    425 Express finally arrived!

Oh, and l'll quickly add that for all our non-Australian friends, AR2206H is also known as H4895 (y) Russ

    425 Express finally arrived!

Thanks mate (y) I guess l didn't worry about open sights because l've never had a scope fail on me while out in the field. l'm a Leupold fanboy and l swear by the Warne steel bases and rings and when torqued up and loctited l've never had a problem... But I also know that could change any hunt...
