    animal slaughter in namibia

Remembering back to the drought in Kenya decades back. Same option... culling.... the PETA types were protesting the killing. One of the top women said she would rather see the herds go to extinction rather than culling. Spoiler alert: many believed starving to death was painless.

    RETUMBO POWDER

Retumbo is too slow for the 416 Rem. I load a 450 grain in the 41 Rigby with 101 grains of Retumbo. The slowest would be in the 4350 range for the Rem and still requires a compressed load to push 2400 fps. Stay in the Varget/RL15 range. As for the 416/500 , another area of AH shows H1000...

    Back country carry gun

The news story is out there of a guy walking his dog in Soldotna, Alaska when attacked by a brownie. 44 mag saved the day. The bear was old, starving and picked the guy for his next meal. A lot of interest in 10 mm, but a 44 or 45 loaded heavy is good medicine.

    Back country carry gun

If one could, in the blink of an eye, send about 2% of the US population to their original homeland, the crime rate in the US would fall into the lower levels of the EU. The UK and Canada have traditionally had more homogeneous populations with a cultural quality of non-violence... but that...

    450 TSX in .458 WM

The common thread of going long on the 458. The 1950's short magnum craze.... Winchester had the action to make a 450 the correct way... so while "adequate", I would score Winchester as failing in the long run.

    450 TSX in .458 WM

I used Benchmark since it is one of the extreme powders from Hodgdon. Good burn rate and temp insensitive. As others here have also pointed out.... lengthen the cartridge if you can. My Ruger No. 1 and Win 70 could gobble up a 3.6 AOL cartridge without problems.
  13. D

    450 TSX in .458 WM

Your point is well taken..... note that those that use the TSX extended the overall length of the cartridge or are using a Lott. When I brought the 458 out to 3.6", both the 500 Banded and TSX achieved 2100-2200 fps. Even the 450 is really too long for the standard, and volume limited, 458...

    450 TSX in .458 WM

Lott velocities will bring out the best in the Barnes. You may reach 2500 fps with ease. I used Benchmark powder from Hodgson. If you can get Varget... try it. Somewhere on this site is my Magnum article on what I did. Good hunting!!!

    450 TSX in .458 WM

Yes. After extensive testing of a whole bunch of bullet$, I settled on the 450's both TSX and Banded solids. I was using a CZ 550, so I could load the 458s out to Lott length. I had also shown this to be practical with a Win 70 with the swap of parts to those of a 375H&H... easy to do...

    450 TSX in .458 WM

I shot a cape with a 458 with the OAL length of the Lott... using the grooves as a cannular. It was a 450 solid but then shot the dead cape with a TSX at less than 15 ft and retrieved the bullet. One petal gone after plowing through 4 feet of buff and its full stomach contents. Great bullet.

    7.5 x 55 Swiss Smith/Ruben K31 rifle

    7.5 x 55 Swiss Smith/Ruben K31 rifle

The US military tried out the GP11 bullets but had to quit. With their high B.C. the range of the loads exceeded the range safety. If you look at the 284 Winchester, you will see they stole the design of the GP11 and necked it down. Winchester also stole the design for the 338 Win Mag from...

I have their mount for my scope. Pierre at Swiss Products, I guess has passed, recommended RL17 for the powder. Berger VLDs come close to the GP11 design. My rifle has the name tag of the soldier it was issued to under the butt plate. I also have the Swiss Products target sights and...

The 22 Hornet: Uses: Your Choices in ammo, on animals, results

There was an article using the Hornet with the earlier, non-TSX, Barnes for small trophy game. The TSX is too long for standard twists. I modified the magazine on my CZ to increase OAL cartridge length for more powder but could not get the 50 grains for above to stabilize. The 45 gr was iffy.

416 Rigby powder using Barnes 400 Grs TSX

91.5 grains H4350 in mine yields 2400 fps and a tack driver. Great powder. The Rigby case is just right for the TSX as not hampered by case volume.

    Barnes TSX review

Frontal quartering shot at 75 yards with 375 H&H using 300 grain TSX at 2450 fps. Wildebeest piled up about 30 yards away after shot with large chunks of lung all over the place. So many great bullets out there.

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

There is no article on the web dealing with chamber pressures measured while working up large caliber double rifles loads using IMR 3031. .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Please explain "you have never published data"? The only pressure data I have personally acquired was using the Pressure Trace system for my 458 XL article. I have thought about it for the 470, but Wright's extensive pressure work published in his Third edition is a good starting point since...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Glad you have a good load with H4350. When I first got my 470 I was at a loss for optimal reloading but when I found Wright's book things became clearer. I've put over 1000 rounds through it. Mostly cast lead but at full power which is around 2050 fps for regulation. I find the full power...

    .470 NE Reloads and Fillers?

Noth only Wright but Gregor Woods from ZA's Magnum Magazine. 3031 can and has caused detonations that blew up the rifles and in one case part of a very experienced man's hand. Another good reason also pointed out by Wright is the pressure wave in the chamber that can bell a chamber. With the...

Pushing 74.... I was raised on Redfields and Tascos.. I also like collecting functional old scopes such as Nickel. I have a West German Ziess that puts tons of scopes to shame. Oh... at close range most scopes are OK but then look at a far distance and wow. My U.S. Optics 10x can discern...

    Vortex Razor Scopes

You note a significant difference. Those top brands are pretty much in-house controlling most if not all production. Leupold assembles their scopes from foreign sourced parts. I think the last to be in-house was U.S. Optics. All of the good glass is either German or Japanese these days...

    Barnes TSX or not

Partition versus A-Frame? Too bad the old Lion Load from A-Square isn't around. My 2 cents would be for Nosler Partition. Problem is ... few choices. Midway has the 260 grain Nosler. Graf has the TSX at 250... which should do well. Good luck!

What Watch do you wear when you hunt?

I changed my mind... a Rolex.... when the fan is hit by do-do... the watch is a negotiable quantity to get you out of the country. A Casio G-Shock is a must when times are normal.

Cape buffalo hunt coming..what bullets to choose..?

You are correct. Corbett had two 7mms..... a Westley Richards and a Rigby. Rigby recently celebrated his Rigby with a wonderfully engraved version. (Corbett's rifling was still shot out but now we know how.) Thank you for the correction.

Cape buffalo hunt coming..what bullets to choose..?

Historical sidenote.... Jim Corbett's rifle was "never polluted with soft bullets". Westley Richards has the rifle and the bore is completed shot out.... essentially a smooth bore now. How much was from use and from the solids is unsure. I practice with my 470 nitro with hard cast lead...

Cape buffalo hunt coming..what bullets to choose..?

Mentioned by Graeme Wright in his book "Shooting the British Double Rifle" and by Gregor Woods of manMagnum... the early monolithics put strain on the barrels that led to compromise of them. No I haven't. I have shot some of the GS. The cupped bullet design (Woodleigh also) is a great idea. (I bought a whole bunch of Barnes solids with that horrible blue coating. I have brushed off the coating and lathe turned them into 480 grain "banded" with cupped meplat to play...

Cape buffalo hunt coming..what bullets to choose..?

Started off with TSX in the Lott..... the herd got spooked but didn't fully run away. The PH (Hilton Nichols) said to change to solids since the herd was now aware of us. In my case, the solid turned out to be the best option by its design. Any of the premium bullets will do.... both...

I also shot 500s at similar velocity to what a double would do ... which also produced the same quality... and as noted by others... a plethora of positive comments on the Barnes in general.
