    Backup Handgun

Not sure about the legality, but a 10mm or 41 magnum will likely not help much if an angry buffalo decides to end someone. Short of a brain shot with a non-expanding bullet at close range... The buffalo will kill you or someone else before you kill it.

Fired up the casting furnace today

I meant a slow-motion video of one of these hitting a gel block would be boring, shooting the gun is definitely NOT boring! On gel and in animals, these simply blow clean through, making a hole the diameter of the bullet. In terms of terminal performance, the old 8-bore simply does not compare...

Fired up the casting furnace today

Probably not as exciting as you would think. The muzzle velocity of these critters is low! I clocked an average of 1300fps with my regulating load. Granted that's still 4500 ft/lb of energy so it will certainly get the job done. I do have a slow motion video of one of these being fired with a...

Fired up the casting furnace today

I melt a can of two parts bees wax and one part tallow in the oven. Then I dip the bullets base first a couple times until the grooves are filled. Lastly I run them through a sizing die while the lube is still soft.

Furthest, Flattest Shooting Double Rifle Caliber?

Something else to consider. I like to bring a pair of guns that are able to fill each other's rolls. If I'm doing PG and DG then both my guns will be usable for DG. Things happen... And I don't like borrowing guns. On my buffalo hunt I brought a 505 Gibbs and a 416 RM. The 416 was loaded with...

Furthest, Flattest Shooting Double Rifle Caliber?

This post clears things up. Best choice would and an O/U double for sure. Caliber will depend on what is available to you, but 30 Blaser would be a good choice.

SOUTH AFRICA: Deflowering The .505 With DAVE FREEBURN SAFARIS (Special Guest Spike T)

Getting ActionBob's rifle to shoot accurately with the 525gr bullet was actually kind of tricky. I had better luck with 570gr and 600gr bullets in the 505 Gibbs. I personally used a 570gr A-frame and a 600gr VGR2.

    450 TSX in .458 WM

I use a 300gr TSX in my 416 RM and itthe works great! I think a 400gr TSX (if it existed) could work well in a 458 WM. I agree with you on the tried and true loading. If I were to use a 458 WM, my choice bullet combo at this time would be the 480gr DGS and DGX at 2000+ fps. If they were more...

    450 TSX in .458 WM

I think Barnes missed the mark by not offering a .458" 400gr TSX. It would be a more ideal weight for the 458 WM and would be a solid choice for the 458 Lott. As it stands I personally would not use the Barnes TSX for the 458 WM.

Fired up the casting furnace today

I realized I was down to just balls for my 8-bore, so I fired up the casting furnace. In the past I've used Lyman #2 lead alloy for my bullets, but I decided to give my cheap/free scrap lead a try this time. Strangely the bullets came out slightly smaller than the other alloy but slightly...

Should I add a mercury recoil reducer to less than 9 lbs 458 win mag

My vote is to just add lead. A cheap easy solution is to drill a hole in the stock under the butt pad, add lead shot, then seal with epoxy. The size of the hole and amount of lead will depend on the balance of the rifle. You can do the above method to the forgrip as well. This allows you to...

    Hunting Elephant with Super HardCast?

Unjacketed bullet on elephant? In a 4-bore or maybe an 8-bore. But, I wouldn't try it with anything else. I'm not sure I would entirely trust my 8-bore, even with 1200gr hard cast bullets. The chance of failure is higher than I feel is safe. If it was just my life on the line, then sure, I'd...

    Meth and Mexicans in RSA??!

Supply and demand, people want to feel good and drugs are an easy/cheap way to feel good. Fighting the supply is largely a waste of time and resources. If you kill the demand, the supply will die of natural causes. In the case of meth, the best way to fight it is education. This stuff does...

Preparing to order or buy a Double Rifle: help me choose the caliber

I voted 450/400 as it will be the easiest to shoot well for most people. There isn't much of a difference in performance between most 450 NE cartridges and the 470 NE. Either would be a good option and I would choose based on the gun. The 500 NE is a wonderful working cartridge and a fine...

Tactical lever actions - what's the appeal?

Semi-auto guns are basically illegal in WA. This gun would be legal here if it's magazine cannot be removed. Detachable magazine over 10rnds are illegal here. also, lever action guns are one of the few exceptions to our threaded barrel law. We need to remember that not all of the USA has the...

    577-450 Hunting?

No experience with the cartridge but I imagine it would be fun to play with. Im assuming it's a black powder gun and the cartridge performance is likely somewhat superior to original 45-70 loads given the larger case dimensions. But I'm just guessing here.

    450/400 3" double as a stopping rifle?

A 375 Ruger with standard loads would be much better than a 458 WM loaded down to 45-70 performance.
  42. matt85

    450/400 3" double as a stopping rifle?

A 30-06 will stop a buffalo or elephant with a brain shot. For what little my advice is worth, I would not recommend a 450-400 NE as a primary stopping rifle. Personally I would want at least something like a 458 WM or 450 NE. If I was a PH who dealt with a lot a buffalo or elephants, then a...
