ZIMBABWE: Zambezi Hunters & PH Thierry Labat

I'm just an occasional poster here (frequent lurker), but I wanted to share the report of my recently completed hunt in Zimbabwe. I hope you enjoy it. *** Also, it seems that some of the pictures are too large to view on this page. If you zoom out to 75%, you can see the entire image ***...

    Leopard hunt!

First it was a 200 lbs leopard. Now it's a 170 lbs leopard. If weight is so important, just buy a dead, fat male from a zoo and mount him. The leopard, hunted properly, is the trophy, period. The successful hunt (for a male) is reward enough. Big skull, heavy cat, old cat, long cat . ...

Other 1st time safari tips needed

Passport photos . . . what? Never heard of that, never done that, and I find nothing in the SAPS rules about a passport-type photo. I'm ready to be corrected, but I've sent in my permits for this year, sans photos, and I did the same last year. I'm confused.

I'll bite. #1: You CAN clear your own guns, but why would you? To save $150? Really? I hear everyone talk about how easy it is, etc, etc, etc, but I've been there when the S hit the Fan, and I was glad to have some locals there to get me and the guns out of the SAPS office without me and...

    Hunting Deals....where did they go?

Top hunts in top areas are sold for top dollars to recession-proof hunters; recession be damned. Middle to lower level hunts are hard to give away in tough times. I saw PG ranches in RSA and Nam. that did not sell a single thing at DSC and SCI. Beside them were guys that were sold out of 75k...

    thief and poacher dirk terblanche

Next time, you might consider hunting where there are more than one or two shootable cats. Setting out to shoot a single leopard or limiting yourself to two possible leopards is a recipe for failure. More cats on property = more likelihood of getting a mature male on bait = more dead cats =...

Big teeth are the obvious trophy criteria, but I like big warts and a wild hair doo. You have all three of those and you have a trophy hog.

Rich, Sango. Wife and I are trying to shoot the big four all on that place. Two down, two to go. Thierry, Dave Rademeyer, and I have a LDE plan for 2013. Bigger elands in CAR . . . interested?

You're right. Thierry introduced us on the last day of the show when he and I were running some errands. I also tried to buy the Sango 2011 lion hunt and was too late. Last I heard, they'd still not shot a lion. I believe the last day of the hunt was the 24th. I'm booked for the Sango lion...

Lord Derby Eland hunted in Cameroon

No doubt that the LDE is the grandest animal on the continent. Have a look at this guy, taken by my grandfather, with me in tow, in Cameroon in 2004. The body on this eland was unbelievable. 46 inch horns, well worn.

    Leopard Conservation????

The main leopard conservation tool in modern times (aside from quotas, not shooting as vermin, etc) is the policy of shooting only male leopards. That said, leopard research and conservation is a difficult deal. Outside of the national parks, there are basically no places to study leopards...

Mike: I was thinking that you were going in April, but second guessed when you didn't post a report. Two words: HUNT REPORT! And, of course, congratulations my friend. Pics to willparks@scottsboro.org (if you want to share). Again, congratulations and welcome home. Cheers to Katherine. Will

How 'bout that! Two Wills. FYI: Verney Carrons are a nice piece for the money. I know Ken at Kebco and I've fondeled several of his wares. Good gun for the money. Lots of praise for VCs over on another forum.

You can take the trashy bolt rifle out of the boy's hand, but . . . I have a spy going to look at it this weekend. However, I leave in 48 days. Too late to change my kit. And when are you headed over for Mr. Spots? Any day now, right? I hope those lions move back into the neighborhood...

    Whats your favorite?

When I think about what I'd like to do if time and money were not a consideration, I have about four big items. 1. Those Botswana elephants get me excited. The only problem is practically nothing else there to hunt. Shoot a big bull on day one and you have 70-100k in a one day hunt and...

Yes, Mike, my first SAVE cat. Tap: He was 155 with a 17 inch skull. 8 or 9 years old. Don't get too caught up in the weight of your (or your wife's) leopard. Get a mature male on bait and you've done the hard part. As for weight, 200lbs leopards are rare as 400 inch elk. A handful are...
