Dumb question on Leupold M8 3X

The M8 was in production for decades. They had numerous updates through the years. At least some later models were click although to the best of my recollection they were 1/2 MOA.

    375 rifle which one?

You will often find that resolution is better at lower magnification in a variable. Your Leupold may shoot better groups with your VX-II at 6x especially since that's essentially the same glass as the VX-1. That's pretty similar glass to my Sightron (based on my own scopes only) and I shoot the...

    If You Want a .404...

The funny thing is I'm 6'2" (or at least was) and the correct length of pull for me is between 13.25 and 14" depending on cast off and exactly which theory you use (5.75" from trigger to nose), 1" from thumb to nose or 3 Finger Width from thumb to nose. I find I shoot shotguns and point fired...

    375 rifle which one?

I suspect resolution is considerably more important than power. 10" 10-Shot Groups have been done at 1000 yd with a 10x. Of course I'm not that shooter, don't own that rifle and seldom see the deadcalm conditions required for that. Some evidence exist that the micromuscular contractions as you...

    375 rifle which one?

Well seeing as how Mauser doesn't exist anymore (the current Mauser is just someone who bought the rights to the name) you are only going to get a copy unless you rebuild an older one and the vast majority of those are not Mausers either. I own a Commercial FN Action built in the '50's. It may...

    375 rifle which one?

Blasers are like Legos. You can pay under $3,000 for a complete Blaser R8 Pro S or $3,000 just for a barrel or engraved bolt assembly. On the other hand a basic barrel + magazine + bolt head can be had for $1600 or less if completely changing cartridge family if your taste are more pedestrian.

I've shot 4" Groups at 300 yards with Redfield Sights but my eyes were a lot better then. They used to ask me to read the bottom line on the eye chart and I said "Copyright 1978". I'm still 20/10 with corrective lenses but focusing on the front sight and a small bull at 300 yards at the same...

    375 rifle which one?

The .416 Rem Mag is the newest common caliber in Africa for DG. I suspect the .375 Ruger is headed there. Regardless the .416 RM hasn't replaced the .416 Rigby and I doubt the .375 Ruger will replace the .375 H&H. It wasn't that long ago our choice in common production rifles was .375 H&H or...

What is it about 404 Jeffery?

Well 3.3530" would have certainly reduced the amount of mods needed to get it to fit in a standard action. On the other hand the amount of metal removed from the action on rifles built in the 1905-1907 Time Frame makes me believe that OAL never made it to production.

    6.8 lb?

Does a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .375 H&H really weigh 6 lb, 13 oz? That seems awful light. But then Im one of those guys that thinks of a 450/400 3" as being the Heavy Rifle instead of the Light.

    Mild large bore

Not incouraging anyone to violate the minimum caliber (if one exist) when it comes to to size but a 6.5x55 in the correct location with a suitable bullet beats a .500 NE in the wrong location any day of the week. Also Big Bore would depend on whether you define it as starting at .400 or .450.

    375 rifle which one?

On used rifles ... Maybe, but I doubt it. The current best new prices Im seeing are $1000 for CZ550. $1100 for M70. Im not seeing Ruger Africans much cheaper. Based on his selections I think he prefers a traditional Wood Stocked Rifle (It would still be tough to find a Ruger Alaskan .375 for...

Is there a sweet spot in the performance/cost spectrum for safari-grade rifles

You can't half load a Ruger? I thought you could load the mag, pull the bolt back far enough to get the round in the chamber but not release the round from the mag and the extractor was beveled to allow for the extractor to pop over the rim.

Why is the 458 Lott Chambered for .450 Watts?

Lott = 2.80" Case Watts = 2.85" Case Lott Marked Rifles I've looked at are cut for the 2.85" Case (Doesn't make them all that way). I was curious if that was because of the reamers initially used (Watts Reamers), intentional in case of wrong ammo or accidental (extra allowed for growth and just...

Parker Hale - Santa Barbara .404 Jeffery

I'm not exactly a gunsmith but it seems to me the action is subjected to total pressure (Not just psi) and still might be more likely to suffer damage from a .505 Gibbs than a .17 Remington despite the .17 being a higher pressure round. The surface area receiving pressure is far larger so is...

Why is the 458 Lott Chambered for .450 Watts?

A friend asked a question? It appears most (if not all) .458 Lott Rifles are chambered for .450 Watts. Why? Was it a case of early rifles being built using Watts Reamers and it became traditional? Lott = 2.80" Case Watts = 2.85" Case Same Taper. Is it a case of allowing for the making of...

Who all is sitting in the woods with a rifle way to big for the critter they are after

I know the small frame I handled was one of "those" guns. The ones that are simply alive in your hands and you buy regardless of caliber (unfortunately it was a financial impossibility at the time). If the large frame is anything like the small frame you are a very lucky man.

    Nothing Exceeds Like Excess!

14% More Energy than a .700 NE in a 11 lb Rifle does seem a little excessive. Even with a brake! I have often wondered if anything beyond a .577 was really needed even for an Elephant stopping rifle. I remember watched a video with a "Double-Tap" on a charging Elephant with a .500 NE and it...

    .404 Jeffery Price 1907

This is a complicated issue. Standard of Living has went up. If all items went up commensurately you would have no increase in the standard of living. .303 British, good for nothing or classic African cartridge?

Why is it that the original 400 grain at 2050 fps (.450/400 NE 3" with typical barrel lengths) or 2125 fps (.404 Jeffery) loads are good for anything including a 7-Ton Elephant but a bullet with over 50% of the area and mass and similar velocity is inadequate for a 700 lb Kudu? At one time that made sense given how cheaply a CZ could be bought in the USA. They are competing in a different league now in pricing and fit & finish has not kept up. In my opinion (which is worth exactly what you pay for it) the sweet spot is $600. That gets you a new .375 H&H Weatherby...
