What ammo is best to forget?

I always have heard that the most commonly used round in Africa was the 7.62x39 and that more game big and small, more people good and bad have been taken with it than all others. If this is the case, you should have no trouble finding ammo for it even in the most remote corners.

Your favorite new production double rifle manufacturer?

Give me a Beretta 689 Silver Sable anytime. Fits like a glove for fast action shooting with either the rifle barrels on, or the shotgun set. The rifle is also surprisingly accurate and well regulated, making shots out to 250m-300m possible with confidence. Now I just wish that they made it...

Free Hunt for One Hunter & One Observer from Lianga Safaris for 2016

I remember back in the day when my great uncle was telling me how as a child he shot and killed a great big bull moose with an air rifle. He told me that he was given a Daisy Red Rider when he turned 9 and was out walking around one autumn morning looking for things to shoot at when he come...

    Accuracy and .375 Flanged

Hi Timur, Get yourself a nice Heym double. A few people at my club use and recommend them for African DG hunting. The ones I've seen are the 450-400, 500-416, 470 and 500. All big bores for serious hunting. The only one to carry a scope (compact) was the 500-416 and it didn't seem to hinder...

    Accuracy and .375 Flanged

Hi Timur, Welcome. Like you, I dream of hunting Africa, but the reality is that if I'm lucky, I'll only make it there a few times for plains game and maybe a buffalo at best. This is why I don't own a bunch of your large traditional white hunter calibre guns that just sits in the safe. My...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Here's another twist to the story. Right before Christmas I came across a very nice condition Steyr M1903 Mannlicher-Schonauer 6.5x54mm English pattern sporting rifle. It's already equipped with proper claw mounts and a Swarovski 6 power scope. Anyway, I now have her as my Christmas present...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Yes, it is a Beretta O/U 9.3x74R with an extra set of 20 ga barrels. I think the pre approval service is the way to go. This might be a pre condition for my temp export/import permit here in Australia anyway. Plus I noticed that many airlines require copies of import/export permits from both...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Thanks for that bit of info. How would they deal with bring in a double rifle with an extra set of shotgun barrels? Is it considered one or two firearms?

    Duplicating the .318 WR...

I've heard of people loading up the 8x60mm with the 250 bullet to equal the 318 WR. If you compare the two rounds side by side, the cases look almost identical. Is rechambering an option? As far as loading the 8x57mm to that level, you might be able to come close if your rifle has the long...

    405 WIN Csharps

I had Shilo Sharps make a 1874 rifle for me a few years ago and I asked the custom shop if they would make it in 405 WCF for me. They said no, even after I offered to supply a Badger barrel for it. The shop manager said that because it was a different, but close bore size to their 40's that he...

    Cape Buffalo Cartridge?

Remember that old saying that probably more game and men, both good and bad has been killed with the 44-40. Well, I think that this is no longer the case, this title would now most likely go to the 7.62x39.

    Ugly question: 9.3x62 vs .338WM

The 9.3 is a good one, so rest assured that you made a good choice, especially since your's sports a short 20" barrel. A 338 cut down that far would offer no practice advantage balistically and give one hell of a bark. Also remember that you can always get a 338 with a longer 24" barrel set...

    The Sabatti Double Rifle

I've now seen three of them in action at my club and all were the recently made basic version in 9.3x74R and 45-70. I found the rifle well made and nicely finished. They also were very well regulated and shooting 1 1/2" - 2" groups at 50 m which is a lot more than I can say about a number of...

Norma wants to hear what you think

I would like to see Norma start making some tough. 405 WCF loads with as heavy a bullet that will give it the standard 2200 fps that most rifles are sighted for. I figure that with our new high energy powders, this should be achievable with a 350 grain bullet at standard pressures. This would...

    6,5x54mm M-S Loads

I noticed that a lot of the pre-war Steyr 6,5x54 M-S rifles have an oversized groove diameter of up to .268". How do they shoot with a conventional .264" bullet? Does this cause a lot of gas cutting and copper fouling? It looks like only Hornady and PPU make proper sized bullets, but that is...

    .405 win

Just of interest for this calibre and the Winchester 1895 that used it. I know a number of old farmers who grew up on African plantations. Most said the same thing, there always seemed to be a well used Win 95 .405 in the gun rack and that one was the most used when serious work needed to be...

    .405 Winchester and Cape Buffalo?

I have a nice original Deluxe Winchester 95 .405 WCF with a shotgun buttstock and the express sights I plan on using on a water buffalo hunt. Double Rifle Question- O/U or SXS?

Over the years I've gone through 6 SxS and 1 O/U double rifles. I still have one of each and I can tell you that all my SxS doubles took careful load development in order to shoot well, and shoot well they did. I could normally keep a composite group of both barrels inside 1 1/2" at 50 m. My...

Anyone hunted with Sellier & Bellot 7x57 Mauser 173 gr SPCE (Soft Point Cutting Edge)?

It did a good job for me on a sika deer last year in the CZ. I was using a borrower CZ in 7x57mm with a factory S&B 173 gr load and one shot at about 50 m through the shoulder was all that was needed. It penetrated all the way through with minimal meat damage. Would use that load again.

    Resized brass raised ring

I have the same on my 9.3x62mm with Hornady brass. The chamber is cut for a case head of .476" and the brass head only measured .468". I've noticed that a lot of cases now days are made to minimum spec and do this. I wouldn't try to size it out if this is the case, because the dies are...

When have you ever been let down by the performance of your rifle on game?

The most common equipment failures either I've experienced or have witnessed is: -Scope mounts not being loctited on and the screws backing off; loose or even lost scope -Sling giving way and gun hitting the ground, sliding down the mountain, or taking the deep 6 -Magazine falling out or floor...

    Lever Action Rifles In Africa?

My first proper CF rifle was an old veteran Savage 99F in 308 win. It was from my dad, who bought it in Alaska in the 60's from an adventurer who took it up the Amazon a decade earlier while looking for the headwaters. My dad said the fellow shot a jaguar with it. Anyway, I went on to use this...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Now I like your choice Kudu 1. I'm originally from the Alaska Peninsula, but have been drifting all over the world since getting hooked up with the military. I've done a lot of good work with the 7x64 and rate it as my top small bore. Seems like that one is the one I always grab for out of...

    370 Sako Mag (9.3x66)

I wonder if it would be worth the effort of rechamber a 9.3x62mm to the .370 Sako for a performance boost? I think the gap is about an extra 200 fps with factory ammo and maybe half that with handloads using the same same powder type loaded to equal pressures. I guess the down side is...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Thanks for the info Wildrose, I didn't know about the ban on using lever guns in RSA. There are a lot of articles about hunting with them there, but they could be dated and just the same old story recycled. I was thinking in the lines of a Namibia hunt, as most of my friends go there and...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Yes, I am struggling between the head vs heart to some extent. If I was to take two rifles, the first is easy, the M98 9.3x62mm for the head and my old classic 1895 .405 WCF for the heart. On a one gun hunt, I just keep going back to the idea of taking the Beretta 9.3x74R with the shotgun...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Ok, I'm starting to lean towards a one rifle battery and that being a 9.3mm. Now the question is which one? The M98 9.3x62mm given a good load of RX17 will toss a 250 gr TSX out at just over 2600 fps and has a 3-9x scope on an EAW QD system. She has classic express barrel sights with the...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

I just had a chat with a mate of mine who's done a lot of hunting in Africa and he suggested to keep things simple and bring only one rifle. When asked what I should bring, he told me to buy a 375 and be done with it, but out of my current stock, he had two points of view. One, take the...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

Tally so far is: 1st - FN M98 9.3x62mm 2nd - Beretta 9.3x74R 3rd - Winchester 1895 405 and Browning 1886 45-70 tied Out of that lineup, I probably naturally shoot the Beretta and Browning the best, but I can see the merits of the others as well.

    Lever Action Rifles In Africa?

I've heard that the action of a new Meruku made 1886 is at least as strong, if not stronger than the 1895. The limiting factor is the bolt face has a large ejector cutout, which allows the case head to flow back into it if loaded too hot. I've seen this happen firsthand while developing...

    Lever Action Rifles In Africa?

I have two lever guns worthy of taking the Africa or just about any where else. First is a Browning 1886 Carbine 45-70 that had been modified to take 2.8" OAL rounds. Very easy done with a minor loading port mod to get the longer shells in and long throating the chamber. I replaced the rear...

    370 Sako Mag (9.3x66)

Does anyone have any experience with the 370 Sako Mag, also called the 9.3x66mm? I've seen some Sako ad's listing that caliber, but haven't heard or seen much else. I contacted Sako about it, and they told me that it was developed for the Nordic countries to use on the big bears and elk...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

I imagine that I'll be hunting in mixed terrain up to wildebeest sized animals, but wouldn't pass up an eland given the opportunity. I also enjoy the hunt and like a good stalk whether it pays off or not. Typically I don't stretch things and keep my shots inside about 250 m. I'm the type...

Two Rifle Battery in Classic Calibers?

By the way, both the FN and Beretta 9.3mms have EAW mounts, so I can take the scope on and off at will without worrying about losing the zero. I'm not kidding when I say that I've done that a number of times and have never had to re-zero!
