I had a model 70 in 270 from this era of manufacture. These are good guns. The later New Haven rifles had some problems, as most people are aware. And they have the original model 70 trigger design, unlike the current FN manufactured rifles. Great caliber.

I love the Ruger No. 1 rifle’s and have seven or eight of them. They are addictive! If someone has a nice example of one of the varmint models in 223 we could talk about a trade.

Hi Para45, Well, for one thing I already have a 375 Ruger and a Ruger No. 1 in 375 H&H! (Gun nut, of course, like all of us). Also, the Hawkeye actions are standard length and won't accommodate the H&H round without major surgery.

I bought this new about three and a half years ago for Namibia trip. It must have been one of those rifles made on a later Friday afternoon. Chamber was too short, forend pulled strongly to the right, stock finish was uneven, light areas, some blisters on the forend tip. Didn't shoot very well...

It is the same, except it does have the original model 70 trigger as opposed to the current enclosed “MOA trigger.” That is an advantage to your rifle, in my opinion.

The XTR 80s guns are nice rifles. Your 300 H&H is probably even more scarce than the 7x57. My two fav calibers.

I follow the Ruger No. 1 market on a regular basis and own several. I think your price is certainly fair. A little on the low side perhaps. Of course the market for the large chamberings is narrower.

This is a heck of a deal on a nice gun.

CoElkHunter: The only Model 77 375s that Ruger has made are the RSM rifles. They are controlled feed. There's one for sale in this forum now. They don't have the tang safety though (it's a wing-type safety on the right side of the bolt shroud). The RSMs are great rifles, although on the heavy side.

CoElkHunter: I think you're right about that. Finn Aagaard (sp?) used a push feed Win M70 458 for some years. About the Ruger, the tang safety models actually didn't have controlled feed. The extractor looked like a Mauser type, but did not engage the rim until the bolt closed. They worked fine...

A lot of thought was put into the X-bolt magazine. It takes some design influence from the Mannlicher Schonauer design. It feeds the round from the center line rather than staggered left to right. I haven’t had the opportunity to operate one in 375 H&H, but with the long tapered case it should...

The layout of the wood grain on this one through the grip and into the stock is about perfect. I'd buy it if I didn't have a 375 Ruger and a No. 1 375 H&H.
