SOUTH AFRICA: Lion & Oryx With San Souci Safaris

Big thanks to San Souci Safaris and SkinAfrika to helping us get this hunt together. About a year ago, I and many others saw a Namibia problem Lion hunt that Theo (SkinAfrika Consulting) posted that captured more imaginations than just mine I'm sure. Trouble was, it looked like a heck of a great...

Professional Hunters - What rifle do you carry?

I have a much smaller list of rifles I've seen used by PHs personally, but the these two I can say for sure and have seen in the hands of the PHs, I won't put the names down as you never know who doesn't want their info shared especially when it comes to firearms stuff: -Zimbabwe Buffalo / PG...

Hunted a wounded wild Wood Bison bull down here a couple weeks ago, Northern Canada.

Indeed, and we've done just that spent 2 1/2 years in High Level, unfortunately this fellow was a member of the red listed British Columbia Wood Bison population. There's a herd at Pink Mountain BC with a draw, that as I understand it is Plains Bison, escaped from a long defunct ranching...

Punishment can actually be extremely severe, for instance they can seize the vehicles, the firearms will definitely be seized, and then generally hefty fines. Wild Wood Bison is a red listed / endangered species as well, so I believe jail time is a possibility.

They did, I just received word yesterday I'm to come in and make a statement, as they are being charged. A development that occurred after the article was written, was that we found the same fellows the next day, and Conservation Officers were notified and caught up with them that time.

    Sauer 202 Forest Takedown 9.3x62 / .30-06 Combo Review

I agree with all sides of this conversation, as everyone has points I couldn't help but reflect on as I reviewed this Sauer takedown. I liked plenty of things about it, and disliked plenty too. In the end, I found for me and this is subjective, the double rifle was a better choice. It is roughly...

Silly question time: Does the 9.3x62 have an exemption for Lion in Namibia?

I read the energy requirement and it doesn't seem there's a .375 minimum bore, is the 9.3x62 legal for Lion in Namibia? If loaded past the energy limit (it comes up about 100ft-lbs shy in factory loads)? Much obliged.

Buffalo & Tuskless Hunt - advice on where to go.

Well fantastic, going off topic but had a Grizzly draw this past fall for 7-51, missed it due to my cross shift having an early baby. Such is life. Good hunting and have a great trip wherever you go. I think you'll very much like the "flavour" of Zimbabwe, RSA is fantastic in my limited...

Buffalo & Tuskless Hunt - advice on where to go.

Have to ask, as in Muskwa, as in Muskwa Ketchika? This man likely lives or plays in the Serengeti of the North as dubbed by National Geographic, my backyard. Hunted Buffalo with Touch Africa Safaris, Jon Collett in 2010, had a fantastic time. He can get a line on Elephant as well and is...

Vancover Island - Black Bear wanted 2013 for 4 swedish hunters

I would strongly suggest looking into the Muskwa-Kechika area. Having hunted both the island and northern BC (born and bred in British Columbia), the island can't hold a candle to the experience you'll have in the Muskwa-Kechika, widely dubbed "The Serengeti of the North". The bears will be in a...

    A little Ruger Feedback Please

I use a Ruger RSM, and have owned it side by side with the CZ as well. I ended up selling the CZ, and use the Ruger for all my big game hunting these days. Joseph smart to ask advice, and you've received the best possible here. I have taken just one Cape Buffalo bull, in Zimbabwe last year, and use the many times mentioned in this thread .375 H&H. Green hunting comes to Zimbabwe

I still don't know how to feel about it. I think in moderation, where dart hunting will almost certainly always remain, it can be a very good thing. Well said Mark. I'm personally an H&H fan, tried the RUM and realized I didn't need to reach, but for some it's useful I'm sure yourself included with the Weatherby. Glenn, my .375's a plain Jane Ruger RSM, have taken nine head of game, seven species if memory serves, over the last couple...

What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

Very good post Glenn, you nailed it, if you can shoot a bigger rifle, it's only going to help. .416 is a great bore too, heavy medium, but for my purposes the .375 is that perfect happy medium. What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

There is an enormous difference between a 9.3x62 and a .30-06, not even close to the same class (9.3 is closer to .375 H&H in effect) and once you've been to Africa your opinion will likely change. I'm only heading back for the secod time so no expert, but saw enough with regards to how tough...

What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

It's true, if you stay with standard .375 H&H loads, it's a very manageable caliber. Best compared to 3" mag 12 gauge shotshells out of a light (18") shotgun in my mind. Plenty doable and not bad at all, I feel .416 Rigby isn't too bad either- but it does recoil a healthy dose more than the...

I ended up booking, decided to go through Frankfurt again (en route to the hunt we were awarded courtesy of Spiral Horn Safaris and AfricaHunting!) as sticking with what I know makes me relax a bit, worth the extra $ and Germany's been very kind firearms wise. Thanks for going to the trouble...

What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

You have good taste in rifles, don't be wary of the .375 H&H, it really isn't bad. Your .35 Whelen likely has very similar recoil, as the .375 rifle is likely to weigh a tad more.

What Calibre to Bring on a One-Gun Safari?

An Eland is a much larger animal than a big Elk, and I'd be the sort to say 9.3x62 and up for them, though quite admittedly many are taken with .30-06, and just as admittedly I've never taken one (was on the spoor of one for a long, long time but Wildebeest became the order of the day after the...

I've gone through Frankfurt with firearms, a breeze, but how about London? Have heard horror stories like everybody, and it makes me nervous. It's cheaper and more convenient for me to transit through London from my home in Canada, any reason I should avoid doing so and pay a bit more to go...
