That’s really good info on the RL 17 and 4064. I currently use 92 grains of RL15 with 500 grain North Fork, and yes I have to add a foam plug to take up space- thank you very much for that 4064 info as well sir

I just acquired some RL15 - I had to buy a single lot of powder (gentleman wouldn’t split it up) so now I have 2 pounds of 4064 also. I’ve never used that and don’t know if I can use it. Anyone used it for 404J ?

According to my little tape measure it’s just shy of 8” ...would this then be a “stretched”action? My bolt rifle terminology is coming along slowly- I’m just a double rifle guy‍

I had a 416 Taylor lined up to build (would have been a rebarrel) and then I acquired a magnum action length FN so now a 404J is in the works. With that said I’ve got a whole lot of extra everything for a Taylor. I’m especially flush with bullets- mostly Speer just to run down the tube.

Thank you for that offer. I am wanting to put a set of EAW or Recknagel quick release mounts on this rifle. I will in all likelihood not use these - oh, it came with a peep sight also. I took that off just for the photos.

Can never have too many North Forks !

I’ve used 2 of those 3 (with a failure from both). Big bones do bad things to big bullets. Never had a North Fork give up even when big bones were encountered. Get you some and spin them down the tube.

I was lucky that I had a go to guy for North Forks after they shut down. I’m flush with .458, also a decent stash of .416 & .423

The second bull I shot in Tanzania was almost exact same results. I won’t shoot anything else...but Swift A frames would be a good second choice

Exactly what I figured was happening- something out of tolerance. Thank you for your input

450#2 (.458 caliber), North Fork 500 grain PP soft nose at 2135 fps. Cape buff at 57 yards, bullet on left: entered behind last rib, ended lumped under skin in opposite shoulder, 0.82 inch, 489 grain. Bullet on right: insurance shot at 20 yards from behind into back 0.85 inch, 498 grain (yes 498).

Ok to clarify - I said the firing pin drops when the gun is on safe IF the bolt is slightly moved from fully closed position...Also the firing pin drops if (the bolt is not touched from the fully closed position) and the safety is moved to fire position.
